14:19 chm jberger : regarding your comment from yesterday, "if a precompiled binary is provided for a given alien module, it does not require a c compiler"
14:19 chm jberger : I can't think of a use case where you would how a precompiled binary library would be used without a C compiler
14:20 chm jberger : All the XS coding I have done requires a compilation step, if not, then you wouldn't need Devel::CheckLib for those special cases
14:21 chm jberger : The biggest benefit of Devel::CheckLib is that it is portable across perl platforms, unlike many linux-isms which require special support on non-linux platforms
14:22 chm jberger : I like the generality of the pkg-config approach but the missing piece for non-unix platforms is the install phase of the *.pc files.
14:22 chm jberger : That is what would need to be added to Alien::Base if pkg-config were to become a more generic approach

18:02 sivoais the way you can avoid compiling for bindings is by using an FFI, but I haven't tried that yet
