00:39 pdurbin sivoais: yeah, a little underdeveloped. :) robustness. hmm.
00:54 pdurbin oh, I see, quite a few more thoughts at https://github.com/zmughal/module-ecosystem-code-analysis/blob/master/TODO.md
01:00 sivoais I'd like to work on it, but it isn't something that will give great returns other than having some cool data analysis under my belt. :-) I'm just keeping it in the back of my mind in case I have some inspiration.
01:03 pdurbin I feel like it's a little hard to understand a language ecosystem until you're in it for a bit.
01:04 pdurbin not to say there isn't value in crunching the numbers :)
01:05 sivoais Yeah, you definitely have to be in it to get a feel for it. Crunching numbers is just a way to corroborate that with data.
01:07 sivoais Another thing I recently found out: people in different parts of the world have very different tech preferences even in the same language. Trying to figure out the data behind that will give something that isn't easily learned just by being in a community.
01:08 sivoais (finding the example where I realised that)
01:08 sivoais wow, did GitHub issues' interface just change?
01:08 pdurbin yeah
01:09 sivoais looks less cramped <https://github.com/blog/1866-the-new-github-issues>
01:11 sivoais this thread shows what I mean by regional differences within a community <https://github.com/hachiojipm/awesome-perl/issues/1>
01:12 pdurbin huh
01:12 sivoais the list originally contained several web frameworks, but not Dancer. Dancer is well known and used heavily by Perl folks, but not in Japan.
01:13 pdurbin sivoais: some chatter about module ecosystems: http://irclog.greptilian.com/sourcefu/2013-01-07#i_1347
01:18 sivoais hehe, awesome. Ohloh does some nice work with analysing open-source, but it is largely opt-in, iirc. You have to actually add all you repos to it by hand.
01:19 sivoais it calculates metrics like project cost estimates and year-over-year activity <http://meta.ohloh.net/factoid-list/>
01:20 sivoais ah, Ohloh changed their name to Blackduck Open Hub recently <https://www.openhub.net/>
01:21 pdurbin yeah, we added our stuff to it. anyone can add anything. you don't have to be affiliated with the project
01:22 sivoais yeah, adding large numbers of projects is flaky as they don't have an API. I used <http://blogs.perl.org/users/brian_d_foy/2012/07/import-github-projects-to-ohloh.html> and it got partway there
01:22 pdurbin a guy at work was asking how many lines of code certain project have and I suggested that he add them to Ohloh. worked great
01:25 sivoais I wanted to know how much money I was wasting working on open-source instead of reading papers :-P (totally kidding, heh)
01:25 pdurbin :)
