I was sure that one of the languages I've used (perl/pdl R ... ermm that's about it ) has some kind of fast/efficient chunky reading methods for hug files (images text whatever) as a builtin that handled the chunk to chunk "hand offs"  (a bit like Stream::Reader answer to that SO post http://stackoverflow.com/a/36208336/2019415)  auto-magically in a cache or something

18:31 chm gtodd: I would be interested in feedback if you try the mapflex().  A big push for 64bit indexing support for PDL-2.015 was to allow *huge* file operations more easily.
18:32 chm If you have sufficient address space, it should be possible to map and access multi-TB files and larger.
