01:57 willthechill okay I'm backc
01:57 willthechill *back
01:57 willthechill :P
01:57 willthechill back from an extended vacation away from IRC!
01:58 willthechill yes I am alive and still hard at work
01:58 willthechill just haven't been on IRC
02:36 anton joined #perl11
08:25 anton joined #perl11
19:18 willthechill anton: hi!  :-)
19:19 willthechill karjala: howdy!
19:20 karjala Howdy!!
19:20 karjala Didn't have the chance to play with rperl lately
19:20 willthechill karjala: I've been off IRC for several weeks but I'm back now, haha!
19:21 karjala Oh goody
19:21 willthechill we've got more published for chapter 3 in Learning RPerl
19:21 willthechill http://rperl.org/learning_rperl.html#CHAPTER_3%3A_ARRAY_VALUES_%26_VARIABLES
19:22 willthechill all the way up through section 3.9 is now online
19:22 willthechill with more coming soon, haha!
19:23 willthechill karjala: can you please tell me, how does the formatting of Learning RPerl chapter 3 look in your personal web browser?
19:23 willthechill kentnl: hello sir
19:25 karjala willthechill: formatting is not very good when viewing from phone's browser... i mean everything looks tiny
19:25 karjala Its not responsive
19:25 willthechill oh dang good point!
19:25 willthechill karjala: I've got you listed for working on WebPerl, maybe you can help me make Learning RPerl responsive?
19:26 karjala I'm not good at front end
19:26 willthechill ah okay gotcha
19:27 karjala Or responsive
19:27 willthechill well that is good to know!  :-)
19:27 karjala I can try nevertheless but no guarantees
19:27 willthechill wow I would sure appreciate it
19:27 karjala Ok
19:28 willthechill so I guess there are 4 main steps for Learning RPerl...
19:28 willthechill 1.  the original POD   https://github.com/wbraswell/rperl/blob/master/lib/RPerl/Learning.pm
19:28 willthechill 2.  the shell script    https://github.com/wbraswell/rperl/blob/master/script/development/learning_rperl_generate.sh
19:29 willthechill 3.  the perl script    https://github.com/wbraswell/rperl/blob/master/script/development/pod2rperlhtml.pl
19:29 willthechill 4.  the HTML    http://rperl.org/learning_rperl.html
19:29 willthechill and it goes in that order: 1, 2, 3, 4
19:30 willthechill stage 4 is obviously what gets published online
19:31 willthechill also for stage 4, the syntax highlighter (which I did not write)    https://github.com/wbraswell/rperl/blob/gh-pages/javascripts/metacpan_rperl.js
19:32 willthechill and also for stage 4, the nice formatting which I modified as shown in the source code      https://github.com/wbraswell/rperl/blob/gh-pages/stylesheets/metacpan_rperl.css
19:32 willthechill I think everything you need is actually in that last file, the CSS file    metacpan_rperl.css
19:33 willthechill as far as making something responsive, doesn't that all happen in CSS?
19:33 willthechill (I'm not an expert at front-end either, obviously!)
19:33 karjala Also a line innthe html file
19:33 karjala Viewport something
19:34 karjala I only know about that line
19:34 karjala Maybe its enough
19:35 karjala Ill try it in 10 mins
19:35 willthechill sweet!
19:44 karjala chapter 3 appears well on Firefox/Linux
19:44 karjala (desktop browser)
19:45 karjala it seems to take a long time to load, the browser almost hangs, but that might be a glitch on my machine (check it out with other people)
19:45 willthechill okay good deal on desktop  :-)
19:46 willthechill yes it takes about 5 seconds to load for me
19:46 willthechill because it is a large single file
19:46 willthechill we can also modify stages 2 and/or 3 in order to split it into individual chapters
19:46 willthechill there is already some basic support for that somewhere in there I think
19:48 willthechill also the roadrunner PNG is too large, 620K, I need to compress that or convert to JPG or something
19:49 willthechill I'll do the PNG now
19:54 karjala smaller dimensions would do, as well
19:54 karjala for the eimage
19:54 karjala this is what I'll try to implement: https://css-tricks.com/snippets/html/responsive-meta-tag/
19:55 willthechill yeah I'm working on the image now
19:55 karjala the image's dimensions are ginormous
19:56 willthechill for me, the image is just under my screen width on an old dell latitude laptop
19:56 willthechill and that is what I was going for, something that would at least scale up to the width of my laptop screen
19:56 willthechill and it is not a large screen
19:56 willthechill but I can compress the file size of course
19:56 willthechill I'm reading 1250x809 as the current image dimensions
19:56 willthechill is that the same that you see?
19:58 karjala the image is 1250x809, but when viewed on the webpage, it's larger
19:58 karjala it's like you've expanded it
19:58 willthechill hmm that's weird
19:58 willthechill oh wait that's probably what it is supposed to do
19:58 karjala it fills the width (1920 x 1080)
19:58 willthechill it is simply supposed to stretch it to fill the width
19:58 karjala ok
19:59 willthechill yeah okay
19:59 karjala I have a Dell Latitude as well, but HD
19:59 willthechill we can make it scale to something less than the full width if you think it is bad
19:59 willthechill or we can just leave it as-is
19:59 karjala I don't have good taste, ask someone else better.
20:00 willthechill haha okay we will leave it for now.  ;-)
20:00 willthechill but I will compress the size
20:12 karjala willthechill: look for the string UNSORTED in the HTML
20:12 karjala there's some pretty large lines after that, containing no spaces
20:12 karjala these appear as single lines on the mobile device
20:13 karjala ok, i'll do a workaround
20:13 willthechill karjala: okay but first, I fixed the image issue
20:13 willthechill http://rperl.org/learning_rperl.html
20:13 willthechill it should load much faster now and the image is not quite so wide
20:13 willthechill you may need to do the old shift-reload trick to clear or bypass cache
20:14 willthechill updated version linked above should read v0.152 w/ a JPG image instead of the previous PNG image
20:15 willthechill karjala: oh are you talking about the "UNSORTED" operators in chapter 17?
20:15 willthechill I can comment that out so that it does not appear at all in the HTML...
20:15 karjala yes do that pleasse. it's spoiling the whole mobile layout
20:15 willthechill okay doing now
20:17 karjala tell me when done
20:18 willthechill roger
20:20 willthechill karjala: done!  :-)
20:21 willthechill also, is it loading faster now and not hanging your browser?  and does the image look a little less huge?
20:24 karjala it doesn't load noticably faster, but the bird is a smaller, which is good.
20:29 willthechill okay well it loads faster for me at least.  :)
20:30 karjala willthechill: here's my small contribution: if you add this line right after <head>, mobile display will be somewhat improved: <meta name="viewport" content="width=device-width, initial-scale=1">
20:31 karjala you can test it with chrome on desktop (it's got a mobile emulation mode)
20:31 karjala that's what I did
20:31 willthechill okay I will make the change now!
20:31 karjala thanks!
20:31 willthechill how do you do the mobile emulation mode?
20:32 karjala do this:
20:32 karjala open the webpage, then press F12 to open devtools
20:32 karjala make sure "Elements" is chosen on the top of devtools
20:33 karjala Immediately to the left of the word "Elements" there is a little mobile&tablet icon
20:33 karjala click on that
20:33 karjala gimme an email address so I can send you my screenshot with the icon
20:33 karjala no, i have your fb account
20:33 willthechill sure FB works
20:34 willthechill and yes I see the icon
20:34 karjala click there, and the rest is easy
20:34 willthechill *nods*
20:35 willthechill okay I'm making the change now, will let you know in a minute when it is live online
20:35 karjala you can choose the list of devices that you can emulate to, from the settings screen of devtools
20:41 karjala i'm off to bed. goodnight.
20:42 willthechill okay thanks!  goodnight
20:42 willthechill :-)
21:01 willthechill sivoais: hi how are you?  :-)
21:05 willthechill sten1: hi do I know you yet?
21:05 willthechill vytas: hi have we met before?
21:21 sivoais willthechill: I'm doing well. Just trying to use the rest of Sunday to get some work done. ;-)
21:22 willthechill sivoais: cool!  I sent you an RPerl invite, you should see it in your g-mail account or you may need to log into trello.com  :-)
21:27 sivoais ah, I see it!
21:27 willthechill sweet!
21:28 willthechill you should see that I made a comment to you on Trello about your areas of interest
