07:34 psch well, fluidsynth is really powerful, if someone unintuitive
08:31 timotimo oh?
08:31 psch oh, wait, no
08:32 psch i was thinking of synaddsubfx
08:32 psch fluidsynth is just a sampler :S
08:32 psch i mean, as a sampler it's also pretty powerful, but that always depends on the soundfonts you find
08:32 timotimo hehe
08:33 timotimo yeah, synaddsubfx is *really* powerful
08:33 timotimo and i have no idea to work it
08:33 timotimo so yeah
08:33 psch i have like 1.5 gb of soundfonts lying around locally
08:33 timotimo the description checks out
08:33 psch although i forget where i got them from :|
08:33 psch probably aggregated by some random person on the internet and offered for download
08:33 psch i'm pretty sure i didn't torrent it
08:34 psch looks like it was this pack: https://archive.org/details/sf2soundfonts
08:35 psch well, at least a few of the names match vOv
08:53 psch idk, the hardest part about synaddsubfx is the interface to me
08:54 psch i mean, functionally it's just a subtractive/additive synthesizer
08:55 psch and those are actually pretty simple - just route different oscillators with potentially different waveforms together (that's the additive part) and take things away with filters (that's the subtractive part)
08:55 psch not like those bonker FM synths, which really seems like lots of math to even have an idea what it could sound like :P
08:55 psch +s
08:59 timotimo mhm
08:59 timotimo how do you drive synthesizers like that?
09:00 timotimo like, what program gives you an interface for that and also routes midi in and audio out?
09:01 psch i use qjackctl
09:01 psch and i think zynaddsubfx (yeah, it has a z, i just googled :S ) brings a GUI?
09:02 timotimo heh.
09:02 timotimo ok
09:02 psch getting a clean jackd setup is a bit fiddly though, depending on what you want to route through it and if you want to always run and so on...
09:02 psch also whether pulseaudio is around or not
09:03 psch https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ZynAddSubFX#/media/File:Zynaddsubfx.png yeah, looks about how i remember it
09:03 timotimo i've done it in the past
09:03 timotimo i've also used zynaddsubfx through lmms
09:03 psch it's such a mess, that synth >_>
09:03 timotimo lmms comes with a bunch of presets
09:04 psch zynaddsubfx itself too iirc, and they're pretty great afair
09:05 psch i have somewhat of an aversion to using presets though
09:05 psch feels too effortless
09:05 psch and, like, i've been to this one goa festival
09:05 psch and one of the songs literally used the set-at-startup preset of a pretty famous synth for its hook
09:05 psch and i almost just left again, 'cause that's just terrible
09:06 timotimo hahaha
09:06 timotimo i would never make music for others to listen to :)
09:09 psch heh, idk
09:09 psch i mean, i've written exactly one song for someone else
09:10 psch but i can't help wanting to show off things i really like
09:11 psch although i don't really get off my ass and actually make anything recently
09:11 psch partly also because something is apparently broken with the hdd that holds my linux install, which is why there's no development on Music::Helpers for example :/
10:05 timotimo uh oh
10:07 psch i *think* it's on sda0, so not too bad for my data at least, but yeah :S
10:07 timotimo you probably tried the obvious already, right? smart self-check and such?
10:07 psch yeah
