18:54 Util Pre-report: Worked on Parrot Coverity issues. Plan to finish R* .dmg this week, with no more betas. EOR
18:55 masak pre-port: been coding a little Perl 6 lately. my free tuits are still very much an endangered species while I settle into the new job. I expect it to get better. I announced the winner of the p6cc contest. been discussing GSoC ideas with various people. EOR
18:56 PerlJam masak: did you give moritz_ his $100  (sorry I don't know how to compose a pound symbol on this keyboard)
18:57 masak PerlJam: I sent him some books on his wishlist, yes. also, there's no pound in EUR :)
18:57 PerlJam oh, it was 100 euro wasn't it?  momentary brain lapse.
18:58 masak not sure when they'll arrive, but pretty sure they haven't yet.
18:58 masak we'll probably get progress reports from moritz_ as they do ;)
18:59 PerlJam I like thinking of it as 100 euro because I think it would be interesting if that "money" could make the rounds of #perl6  (now moritz_ needs to offer 100 euro for some contest :-)
19:00 masak actually, that's more or less what happened to me with the wiki prize :)
19:00 masak perhaps that's what you're alluding to.
19:00 masak I should say "to us", because there were three of us sharing that prize.
19:01 masak o/
19:02 Util \o
19:03 mberends whoz op?
19:03 PerlJam Is it #phasers time?
19:04 PerlJam If so, who'se running the show?
19:04 masak I can run the show.
19:04 masak let's proceed in alphabetic order.
19:05 masak anyone have anything to report?
19:05 mberends a little...
19:05 masak mberends: go ahead.
19:06 mberends I have resumed benchmarking Rakudo, and am happy to report much lower RAM usage during typical spectests.
19:06 masak \o/
19:06 mberends this is probably the result of excellent work by bacek++ etc on the Parrot memory management guts.
19:07 mberends We are down to between 40MB and 50MB for typical spec tests, under half of what it used to be.
19:07 mberends timings are on a gradual positive trend but still not as quick as alpha
19:08 mberends This work is evolving into Popolnik, which will be ready for alpha testing soon
19:08 mberends .EOR
19:09 moritz_ \o/
19:09 masak thank you. mberends++
19:09 masak moritz_: anything to report?
19:09 * moritz_ received two items of the price today :-)
19:09 masak \o/
19:09 moritz_ apart from that... let me think...
19:10 moritz_ fixed a rakudobug that made a book example regress
19:10 moritz_ discussed book variations with sjn++ in #perl6book
19:10 moritz_ fixed the min() and max() bug for real
19:10 moritz_ discussed gsoc proposal with tadzik++
19:11 moritz_ discussed INET stuff with TiMBuS++ (IPv6 support seem to have regressed at leat partially)
19:11 moritz_ I thikn that's it for now
19:12 masak moritz_++
19:12 masak anyone I've missed who wants to make a report?
19:12 masak pmichaud is here in name but probably not behind the keyboard...
19:13 masak any questions or points of general discussion?
19:13 masak if not, we'll simply make it a short #phasers this week ;)
19:14 mberends what are the GSOC critical dates?
19:15 mberends eg last date for submissions?
19:16 mberends never mind, it's not important to me, I just wanted to understand the timeline that  tadzik++ etc will be working to.
19:17 * moritz_ hasn't found the detailed timeline yet
19:17 PerlJam How many Perl 6 proposals are there?
19:17 moritz_ the gsoc site has been relaunched, and I have a hard time finding anyhting
19:17 moritz_ PerlJam: two pod6 related proposals so far
19:17 PerlJam And how many Perl 6 people are mentors?
19:17 moritz_ I have applied
19:18 moritz_ and I want to encourage others to do that too
19:18 moritz_ just to give them a fair rating, in presence of many p5 mentors
19:19 PerlJam moritz_: when did you apply?  how long does it take to be notified?
19:19 PerlJam I seem to recall that last year (or maybe the year before) everyone just sent their email to dukeleto or whoever the admin was
19:20 mberends I'll happily volunteer, and would appreciate such pointers
19:21 moritz_ PerlJam: about a day
19:21 moritz_ you need to sign up on http://www.google-melange.com/
19:22 moritz_ and then there's a list of orgs, search for Perl, apply at TPF
19:22 mberends ok
19:23 moritz_ rafl (Florian Ragwitz) is this year's TPF gsoc admin
19:25 colomon o/
19:27 mberends aha, the timeline is all the way down this: http://www.google-melange.com/gsoc/events/google/gsoc2011
19:28 mberends yesterday student application period opened, will close 2011-04-08
19:29 masak I plan to apply as a mentor. also, I'm very excited about our Pod 6 proposals. (in case you couldn't tell from the #perl6 discussion) :)
19:31 PerlJam masak: indeed.
19:32 masak ;)
19:32 masak ok, anything else, folks?
19:32 colomon errr.... I'm working slowly on the endless stream of pi task.  that's it for me at the moment.
19:33 masak colomon++ # pieces of blogging :)
19:33 PerlJam nothing pressing, but ... the book.  Should we try to set a target date for completion?
19:33 masak and/or a roadmap for getting there...?
19:35 PerlJam Having the book ready for oscon would be nice.
19:35 PerlJam or yapc::na
19:35 PerlJam I don't know how much lead time chromatic needs to generate print copies, but I seem to recall that it wasn't very long (on the order of weeks)
19:36 masak a little less than a month, I think.
19:36 masak I guess both of those events are in the summer?
19:36 PerlJam yes, yapc::na in june and oscon July
19:37 masak oy vey.
19:37 masak our momentum on the book hasn't been spectacular lately.
19:38 masak I know it's "just" a matter of focusing on it and applying those tuits... but...
19:39 PerlJam Well, I'm getting the itch to write stuff and I want the book out there, so I've just now given myself a mission: mention the book at each #phasers and to write what I can and prod people about it until it's done.
19:41 masak PerlJam++
19:42 masak just mentioning the book does indeed help.
19:42 masak ok, any other topics for today?
19:42 PerlJam I'll try to suss out areas where the book is weak for next week's #phasers and that'll be my report
19:42 Util PerlJam: I was about to ask for that :)
19:43 masak ++PerlJam
19:44 masak I think I could definitely comb through the book and come out with 100 or so TODOs.
19:44 masak question is where to get those tuits... :/
19:44 PerlJam masak: forego sleep  :)
19:45 moritz_ one more thing... don't just plan to apply as mentor, do it NOW
19:45 spinclad (each day has a foregone conclusion)
19:45 moritz_ it doesn't take long: fill out a form, and write a line to rafl along with the application
19:46 moritz_ like "I'd like to mentor possible Perl 6 projects" or so
19:47 PerlJam moritz++
19:47 * masak opens the appropriate browser tab as a compromise
19:47 PerlJam (I applied earlier today essentially as a direct result of the discussion with tadzik++)
19:48 * PerlJam makes a mental note to ask masak tomorrow if he applied as a mentor.
19:49 masak ;)
19:49 masak ok... shall we call it wraps?
19:49 masak we can always continue pertinent discussion on #perl6...
19:50 moritz_ +1
19:50 PerlJam +1
19:50 masak oki then.
19:50 masak thanks everybody -- you're pretty awesome!
19:55 mberends continuing GSOC mentor signup in #soc-help on irc.perl.org...
21:12 masak left #phasers
21:20 mberends left #phasers
