19:01 masak who would like to emcee today?
19:02 jnthn Well volunteered!
19:02 * masak is too distracted, sadly
19:02 masak and I went last week. :)
19:02 jnthn Aww :P
19:02 jnthn OK, I'll do it...
19:02 colomon jnthn++
19:02 masak jnthn++
19:03 jnthn ...is there really only the four of us? :)
19:03 masak yes.
19:03 jnthn OK, let's do it alphabetically. :)
19:03 * TimToady lrqs
19:03 Util_ I think so
19:03 jnthn colomon?
19:03 * TimToady types left-handed today
19:04 * TimToady sprain'd wrist
19:04 jnthn TimToady: Just find a reason to talk about databases a lot... :)
19:04 jnthn Ouch :(
19:04 colomon errr.... I put on a concert this weekend.  Preparations and post-concert performer-hosting have occupied my entire week.  Except I did get enough further on the endless pi project to do another blog post when I have time.  EOR
19:04 jnthn Endless pi...almost as good as endless pie... :)
19:04 Util_ colomon++ # 3.14...
19:05 masak mmm pie
19:05 jnthn masak?
19:05 masak report: did not release Yapsi. painfully aware of this. will try harder this week. enormously distracted by the realities of life. submitted a few bugs, I think. EOR
19:05 jnthn Guess I'm...oh, j is before m... :)
19:05 masak :P
19:05 jnthn Anyway, I went to OSDC.TW, talked about stuff, uploaded the slides. Hacked a tiny bit.

19:06 jnthn My jetlag is bad this time...dunno why, normally I don't get it so much. :/
19:06 jnthn Anyway, been helping a guy get a GSoC proposal together to do a bunch of S09 stuff.
19:06 ashleyde1 is now known as ashleydev
19:06 jnthn Looking promising.
19:06 PerlJam jnthn++ yay!
19:06 colomon jnthn++ indeed!
19:07 jnthn Expect to work on natively typed attrs and other compiler toolkit bits this week.
19:07 jnthn First bit of the month is a lot of $dayjob, second half I've blocked out some Perl 6 days.
19:07 jnthn EOR
19:07 masak S09! \o/
19:07 jnthn oh, slides are at http://www.jnthn.net/articles.shtml
19:07 colomon what's S09?
19:07 Util_ thx
19:08 jnthn Also there's code sample of the compiler developed in the talk :)
19:08 masak colomon: multidim arrays, hashes, and other goodies.
19:08 jnthn Util_: Any report?
19:08 Util_ I still intend to push out the .dmg for R* ASAP, but have only done testing&patching of Parrot branches this week.
19:08 Util_ EOR
19:08 jnthn colomon: S09 = Synopsis 9 = the one that talks about data structures, native types and stuff...
19:09 colomon ooooooooo
19:09 colomon jnthn++
19:09 PerlJam I have a report of sorts :)
19:09 colomon masak++ too
19:09 jnthn PerlJam: Go ahead :)
19:09 colomon and Util_ ++
19:09 colomon *++, really
19:09 PerlJam I said last week that I'd start looking at the book to see where it needed work.   I didn't get much time to do that but I made a few notes
19:10 PerlJam I decided to take the chapters in order.  The first two (preface,basics) both look good and need very little modification IMHO
19:10 PerlJam operators and subs-n-sigs have some notes for the author that need resolving and some TODOs that need flesh, but otherwise look good
19:11 PerlJam All of the chapters need some sort of wrap-up at the end IMHO
19:11 moritz o/
19:11 PerlJam EOR I guess
19:12 jnthn PerlJam++
19:12 PerlJam I'll continue to look at the book and make more notes (and write stuff where I can)
19:12 jnthn moritz: o/
19:12 jnthn moritz: Any report?
19:12 moritz a short one
19:12 moritz * got my error grant approved
19:12 moritz * recruited [Coke]++ as a grant manager
19:13 moritz * thought more about the spec, and discussed some of it on #perl6
19:13 jnthn Oh, excellent :)
19:13 moritz plans for next week:
19:13 moritz * more errors, erm, thinking about errors
19:13 moritz * start to actually write down stuff (probably in a separate repo)
19:14 moritz blocking on: tuits, brain
19:14 moritz EOR
19:14 colomon moritz++
19:14 jnthn moritz++ # very happy the grant is approved

19:15 masak moritz++
19:15 masak congrants!
19:16 moritz probably masak++ too :-)
19:16 tadzik done: nothing, besides working on GSoC proposal
19:16 masak I forget as well :P
19:16 Util_ moritz++
19:16 masak tadzik++
19:16 tadzik oh, and wrote an initial spec for META.info and friends!
19:17 tadzik and got moritz++ to help
19:17 moritz tadzik: please submit it tomorrow in the latest, so that some p5 folks also get a chance to look at it
19:18 jnthn tadzik: What's your GSoC proposal about?
19:18 moritz and that you still have some time left to change it (I think it becomes immutable when the application period finishes)
19:18 tadzik I think I can submit it even today
19:18 tadzik jnthn: Pod6 parser in Rakudo
19:18 tadzik jnthn: have you read it?
19:18 jnthn oh, nice
19:18 jnthn :)
19:18 jnthn tadzik: No, got a link?
19:18 tadzik I'd appreciate your opinion about it
19:19 tadzik sure
19:19 tadzik (let me convince my laptop that installing win7 is not the most important think on earth)
19:20 tadzik https://gist.github.com/892249
19:20 tadzik jnthn: ^
19:20 jnthn win7 wants MOAR RAM!
19:21 jnthn All ur resource are belong to it
19:21 jnthn ;)
19:21 tadzik and all my disk IO /o\
19:21 tadzik actually I think I was waiting for #phasers and last-call opinions on the proposal to send it
19:22 tadzik anyway: the META.info spec starting up, that'll probably just end up being S22-or-whichever redone
19:22 PerlJam tadzik: submit it!
19:23 masak \o/
19:23 PerlJam TPF only had 2 proposals last I looked.  This worries me slightly (even knowing that we're all a bunch of procrastinators)
19:23 tadzik oh, the sooner the better? :)
19:24 jnthn tadzik: Great proposal!
19:24 PerlJam Well, submissions close at the end of this week.
19:24 moritz PerlJam: on the general mentors list many admins bemoaned reduced student influx
19:24 tadzik yeah, I remember about that
19:24 tadzik just, you know, lazy evaluation :)
19:24 moritz 3 submissions now
19:24 jnthn "Synopsis 26, which specifies the Perl 6 Pod format is an" - probably wants to be a comma after "format"
19:24 jnthn But that's a nitpick :)
19:24 moritz oh, 4
19:25 tadzik if that's the biggest mistake you've found, I'm glad :)
19:25 moritz pafo has 8
19:26 jnthn tadzik: :)
19:26 jnthn tadzik: Really hope this one gets approved. :)
19:26 PerlJam yeah, I used to think that maybe parrot was riding TPF's coattails a little bit, now I think it was the other way around  :)
19:26 moritz jnthn: then sign up as a mentor, then you can vote on the proposals too
19:26 jnthn moritz: Oh, I need to do that anyway since I have offered to mentor the S09 one :)
19:26 moritz PerlJam: GCI changed that, I thikn
19:27 PerlJam moritz: yep.
19:27 tadzik so, any last thoughts before I submit this one?
19:27 tadzik maybe we don't really want Pod after all ;P
19:28 tadzik I should've sent it on April the 1st proposing to rewrite the spec and implement it all in XML
19:29 masak so obvious in retrospect. :)
19:29 PerlJam tadzik: you can still send that proposal, only I don't think it'll get the same response ;)
19:30 tadzik :)
19:30 tadzik now how do I turn a shiny LaTeX into a vulgar plaintext...
19:30 moritz regexes!
19:31 colomon surely there's an app for LaTeX to text out there somewhere...
19:31 colomon moritz: I think you meant grammars!
19:31 moritz I have a latex2man in my $PATH
19:31 jnthn Applied to be a GSoC mentor.
19:31 tadzik pdflatex -> pdftotext. I'm sure it could have been done better, but...
19:32 tadzik moritz: tried that, it generated one line: "this file is generated, do not edit bla bla"
19:32 moritz tadzik: you'll have to hand-edit the result anyway
19:32 Util_ http://stackoverflow.com/questions/530121/how-do-i-convert-latex-to-plain-text-ascii
19:33 colomon Util_++
19:34 Util_ The canonical de-TeXing program is detex, which removes all comments and control sequences ...
19:34 Util_ Tex2mail is slightly more than a de-TeXer — it’s a Perl script that converts TeX files into plain text files...
19:34 Util_ They said the magic word :)
19:34 PerlJam Now that I read the S09 proposal I'm not as happy as I once was.  I had imagined that it would use PDL data structures as reprs for Perl 6 datastructures, but the proposal reads like it's going to re-implement things that PDL already has.
19:34 PerlJam Maybe I'm reading too much into it
19:35 tadzik moritz: it turned out quite fine after some minor editing
19:36 jnthn PerlJam: Those things are in the Perl 6 spec.
19:36 tadzik https://gist.github.com/892249#file_gistfile1.txt
19:36 jnthn PerlJam: Some PDL things are just part of Perl 6.
19:36 jnthn Whereas they weren't part of Perl 5.
19:36 jnthn So have to be in PDL
19:37 Util_ I have not read S09 lately, but I imagine that any part of PDL's design that were non-optimal due to P5 limitations, will be redesigned for P6. Someone can write a compatibility layer for existing PDL code.
19:37 jnthn Right.
19:37 jnthn I think we can end up with something much nicer in Perl 6.
19:38 jnthn But doing the whole lot is way too big for a GSoC project.
19:38 PerlJam yeah
19:38 * tadzik takes a deep breath
19:38 jnthn So I encouraged picking a realistically achievable set of things, which will also be useful.

19:41 tadzik so far I can do it with a tea
19:41 PerlJam you can turn karma into tea?
19:41 PerlJam :)
19:42 jnthn I sometimes turn beer into karma using code as an intermediate step :)
19:42 Util_ "A mathematician is a device for turning coffee into theorems". s/// as approriate.

19:44 jnthn Any more questions/discussion items for #phasers this week?
19:45 moritz tadzik: please record your #perl6 before and after gsoc
19:48 tadzik moritz: my #perl6? my #perl6 karma?
19:49 tadzik moritz: I have to get accepted first :)
19:50 moritz #perl6 karma, yes
