14:43 Topic for #pr-challenge is now CPAN PR Challenge: http://neilb.org/2014/11/29/pr-challenge-2015.html | mailing list -> https://groups.google.com/forum/#!forum/cpan-pr-challenge | public logs at irclog.perlgeek.de/pr-challenge/today
14:43 moritz ok, the channel is now logged; see the topic for the URL
14:43 _Dave neilb: got a list of participants with locations? ;)
14:43 isBEKaml moritz: great!
14:44 lbrown surely someone's created a reverse proxy or similar for github by now?
14:44 neilb you could parse the “hi!” emails from the list…
14:44 sawyer moritz: can you replace the mailing list with the resources repo? it contains the mailing list and other information
14:44 isBEKaml lbrown: nah, they are all spending time sending emails of pmofIndia
14:44 moritz sawyer: in the topic?
14:44 sawyer moritz: yes
14:44 sawyer sorry, that wasn't clear at all :)
14:44 isBEKaml s:1st/of/to/
14:45 neilb but you’re right. At some point I’ll add a column to the relevant table, and ask people to give me their ISO 2-letter code
14:45 _Dave neilb: is location info part of github?
14:45 isBEKaml _Dave: only if filled in
14:45 Topic for #pr-challenge is now CPAN PR Challenge: https://github.com/CPAN-PRC/resources | public logs at irclog.perlgeek.de/pr-challenge/today
14:46 neilb Good point - we could just ask everyone to set the location on github, then someone can do a mashup off that.
14:46 moritz can sombody give me a commit bit to https://github.com/CPAN-PRC/resources ? or should I pull-request?
14:46 _Dave neilb: so off you go!
14:47 neilb It’s not too late you give you a nasty dist for January, you know
14:48 isBEKaml neilb: here you go: http://www.ghtorrent.org/dblite/
14:48 lbrown neilb: care to give an example of a 'nasty dist'? I'm sure the authors would love to know what you think of it.
14:48 isBEKaml you can even query information online
14:48 isBEKaml neilb: be aware that it gathers *all* information including past data
14:49 _Dave nailb: if everyone follows CPAN-PRC then the data comes for free!
14:49 isBEKaml neilb: or just ask everyone to fill in their github info :-)
14:49 neilb oh, I was thinking of one of my own, of course ;-
14:49 neilb )
14:52 sawyer moritz: on it
14:52 sawyer there ya go
14:52 moritz sawyer: thanks

14:53 sawyer you were invited, you need to accept it
14:53 moritz oh
14:54 moritz that's different for organizations vs. non-organizations, right?
14:54 moritz ok, works now, sawyer++
14:55 moritz I've mentioned the public IRC logs in the README.mkdn
14:57 lbrown should we mention http://neilb.org/adoption/ in the readme?
14:57 LLamaRider It's not possible to follow a GitHub org, is it?
14:57 sawyer i have no idea
14:58 lbrown LLamaRider: no, but you can star/watch their repositories
14:58 _Dave i'm having problems trying to find how to programmatically put pins on a google map :(
14:58 LLamaRider lbrown: that much I figured out :) thanks
14:59 lbrown _Dave: I still have issues trying to put them on manually :<
14:59 moritz _Dave: I think you have to write some XML file and upload that
14:59 _Dave docs would be nice
15:00 _Dave moritz: or JSON
15:03 isBEKaml _Dave: https://developers.google.com/maps/documentation/javascript/markers ??
15:03 _Dave good jumping off point: https://developers.google.com/maps/documentation/api-picker
15:04 _Dave this seems the puppy: https://developers.google.com/maps/documentation/javascript/datalayer
15:07 isBEKaml _Dave: nice
15:08 _Dave neilb: got me a list of github nicks?
15:09 neilb I’ll email it to you
15:10 neilb _Dave: you have mail
15:10 _Dave i heard
15:10 _Dave oh dear. google thinks Taiwan is part of China.
15:11 pink_mist so do the chinese
15:12 neilb right, first assignments created … just need to sort out a template for the email, then send them out!
15:14 lbrown sweet
15:17 sawyer neilb++ !
15:19 isBEKaml neilb++ #ImExcited
15:20 * moritz would be a happy with a CSV of assignments, no need for an email
15:20 moritz I guess others feel differently :-)
15:21 isBEKaml moritz: brings back memories from school :-)
15:21 isBEKaml moritz: we used to have a notice board filled with assignments and due dates.
15:24 lbrown so now I can't stop refreshing my email :/
15:31 _Dave "location": "Granada, Spain, Europe",
15:31 _Dave now I want tapas
15:31 mvuets lbrown: patience and IMAP push will save you nerves
15:33 lbrown mvuets: I don't have a mail client on this machine so I'm using webmail, which does magical AJAX things to push new mail... I just keep clicking refresh anyway :/
15:33 lbrown so maybe I just need the patience
15:34 isBEKaml lbrown: heh. I still have an (old) webmail account that doesn't do AJAX
15:35 lbrown zoho didn't do AJAX until recently
15:35 lbrown it's actually an alright webmail client now
15:35 mstreuhofer joined #pr-challenge
15:36 mstreuhofer how come irc.perl.org doesn't support SSL?
15:37 mvuets mstreuhofer: ssl.irc.perl.org - Port 7062 ?
15:37 mvuets (as per http://irc.perl.org)
15:38 pink_mist I think the 'ssl.' bit is wrong (saw someone saying that wouldn't work for them)
15:38 pink_mist (but without it, it was fine..)
15:38 pink_mist it's all a matter of finding the right port
15:40 mstreuhofer joined #pr-challenge
15:43 mstreuhofer alright. irc.perl.org:7062 works.. kinda.. no big win though since the first thing i get is a certificate warning. i guess it doesn't matter then..
15:43 neilb moritz: Module-Find is your assignment
15:43 moritz neilb: noted, thanks
15:44 moritz mstreuhofer: even non-signed certificates protect against passive snooping
15:44 moritz mstreuhofer: just not against MITM
15:44 _Dave damsieboy is a bad perlson
15:44 _Dave not existing in github
15:51 _Dave hah
15:51 _Dave i've exceeded the API rate limit
15:51 _Dave and I get fetch my rate limit because I'm rate limited
15:51 _Dave wahey!
15:52 lbrown yeah github is pretty stingy with their API
15:52 BHS_error hey, HAPPY NEW YEAR Y'ALL
15:52 _Dave "60 requests per hour". Fuck RIGHT off!
15:52 _Dave suppose I cache then
15:53 lbrown there's a way you can increase it I think
15:53 _Dave authenticate
15:53 _Dave CBA
15:53 lbrown if you register your app with them, or something
15:57 moritz https://github.com/crenz/Module-Find/pull/3 my first cpanpr pull request
16:00 moritz 'use' also searches for .pmc files; should Module::Find do the same?
16:01 * neilb is gonna have to go dark for a while :-(
16:03 mstreuhofer joined #pr-challenge
16:04 moritz https://github.com/crenz/Module-Find/pull/4 # my second pull request
16:05 sawyer already?!
16:05 moritz sawyer: both are pretty simple, though I do believe they make the module a bit better
16:06 sawyer still
16:07 sawyer all i did was go to the shop, i come back, two PRs wtf
16:07 sawyer i still didn't get my assignment even :)
16:08 sue joined #pr-challenge
16:09 BHS_error hah, how come people have already an assignment ?
16:09 BHS_error did I miss something ?
16:11 isBEKaml BHS_error: not at all - moritz jumped his queue ;-)
16:11 moritz BHS_error: I mentioned I didn't need an email, and neilb++ simply told me my module in here
16:14 moritz https://github.com/crenz/Module-Find/pull/5 I'll stop now.
16:15 isBEKaml moritz: heh - don't let our ribbing hold you back when you can do more!
16:16 moritz isBEKaml: I don't want to overwhelm the poor maintainer
16:16 moritz guess it's time do document some Perl 6 stuff

16:37 _Dave ok, an access_token gives me 5000 requests per period
16:37 moritz and a period is 28 days? :-)
16:47 mstreuhofer moritz: can you explain in short how you did that PR now? the way i understand it is: 1) fork, 2) clone your fork somewhere locally, 3) create a new branch, 4) commit & push to GH, 5) create the PR from that new branch - right?
16:48 moritz mstreuhofer: correct
16:48 mstreuhofer can you delete that branch afterwards? how about the whole fork? or do you need to wait until that PR is merged before cleaning up on your side?
16:49 _Dave do you really need to fork?
16:49 moritz mstreuhofer: I don't actually know; I just keep my stuff around, in case the maintainer has some feedback that requires me to change some code
16:50 mstreuhofer _Dave: well since you won't have push rights into somebody elses GH repo - i guess yes
16:50 moritz _Dave: yes. "forking" sounds bad, but it actually just means "create a copy to which you have write access"
16:50 moritz it's not like forking an open source project, and taking it into a whole new direction
16:50 _Dave i didn't fork the Tesco wrapper :/
16:51 moritz _Dave: though if you just use the github web interface, it does that implicitly for you, I believe
16:51 _Dave nah
16:51 _Dave CLI this was
16:51 mstreuhofer _Dave: so you just cloned it? what exactly did you do then?
16:51 sawyer mstreuhofer: there's a guide written for it
16:51 moritz mstreuhofer: or did you use the 'git hub' command line tool?
16:51 _Dave worked on it, issed a pull request
16:51 sawyer https://github.com/CPAN-PRC/resources/wiki/My-first-Pull-Request
16:53 mstreuhofer sawyer: i read that document. that far that good. my questions were more regarding the voices in my head telling me to always clean up after myself. :)
16:53 _Dave pfst, add to internet entropy
16:53 sawyer mstreuhofer: ah yes :)
16:53 sawyer i haven't mentioned that on purpose
16:54 sawyer but generally, once your code has been merged, your branch, while still existing, is useless
16:54 sawyer (since the code is already in the main branch)
16:54 sawyer so you can (but don't have to) delete it locally (git branch -d my-branch) and delete it on your github copy (git push origin :my-branch)
16:54 moritz mstreuhofer: branches are cheap :-)
16:54 moritz sawyer: git push --delete orign my-branch # also works, a bit less obscure
16:55 sawyer moritz: yeah, i never remember the "-d" in push :)

17:20 sue to be fair, _Dave, there was a reason for that other than random malice
17:20 _Dave what, assuming other people are wrong by default?
17:20 _Dave now i'm being told off by tomboh
17:20 _Dave plus ca change
17:21 sue it's happening for a reason
17:21 _Dave mst is right even though he's wrong?

17:31 _Dave neilb: those were definitely the alleged github ID's you sent me? There are a LOT of naughty people with no account or with useless locations
17:33 thrig of no account? well they hardly matter
17:33 _Dave they do to me!!!!1!
17:34 _Dave and they'll need an account to do the challenge!
17:35 _Dave Earth, Galactic Sector ZZ9 Plural Z Alpha is not a location
17:37 BHS_error _Dave: updated my location (I'm peroumal1)
17:39 sawyer _Dave: did you go over the emails or asked neilb for the list?
17:40 sawyer some might prefer not to be mentioned publicly - they aren't required
17:40 _Dave neilb gave me the list
17:40 sawyer and they might not want to share where they are from - doesn't make them naughty

18:47 mvuets _Dave: re your last email to the ml: just keep in mind not everyone in question may be subscribed to the list
18:49 mvuets hmm, maybe you shouldn't have disclosed the list of participants?
18:50 _Dave you're the second person to say that
18:52 mvuets neilb: do you have a deadline to join the challenge?

18:55 LLamaRider keep in mind privacy is usually a touchy topic when disclosing data
18:55 mstr joined #pr-challenge
18:56 _Dave github ID's are quite public though, right?
18:56 popl What's the contention?
18:57 _Dave making data public
18:57 _Dave when it's already mostly so
18:57 popl Which data?
18:57 LLamaRider I think what you are doing with the map is great, but it is really easy to rub people the wrong way with privacy
18:57 popl Oh, location.
18:58 LLamaRider seeing your user ID and the location in a mass email to the list could already fluster someone
18:58 sawyer _Dave: a public profile is indeed public, except for when someone doesn't include their location because they don't want to
18:58 popl Yes, it put me off a bit at first (I don't include locative data with any of my online accounts).
18:58 LLamaRider just because "oh! hey! they can do that?!?!" :)
18:58 sawyer and, users might not want to share that they are doing the PR challenge
18:59 mvuets i meant not github ids themselves or location (which is public), but the fact who participate
18:59 mvuets yeah, what sawyer said
18:59 popl I'm trying to be more social though so I think maybe something I'm uncomfortable with might be okay. I don't know.
19:01 mvuets another bit: retaining data (namely location)
19:03 sawyer popl: willingness is try new things you might be currently uncomfortable with is admireable, but not everyone will share these sentiments
19:04 LLamaRider Btw, I remember metacpan also collects user location information. So a CPAN map should also be possible. Or it may even exist?
19:05 popl sawyer: absolutely
19:06 * mvuets reads 'sawyer' as 'lawyer' and blinks
19:06 neilb pink_mist: spot on!

21:15 sawyer bjakubski: i wouldn't worry
21:16 * Su-Shee just looked at her assignment and is laughing her ass off. :) it's one of the stuff I totally hate :) awesome :)
21:17 SimonAW Su-Shee: Hey, what is it?
21:17 _Dave build character
21:17 _Dave that which doesn't kill us
21:17 _Dave etc. etc.
21:17 SimonAW Maybe we can trade ;)

21:25 user_5087 so, i know next to nothing about perl...i'm trying to use padre ide, and i need to setup the plumbing to github, e.g. https://github.com/PadreIDE/Padre-Plugin-Git...chicken and egg, i need padre plumbed for github so i can get git plug-in...can anyone recommend a handy reference to get the plug-in installed?
21:25 user_5087 default padre install throws error can't find cpan config file...
21:27 _Dave jusrt use git CLI

21:28 boreas Is there a good overview of XS? I was assigned an XS module as my first distribution, and am not very familiar with it.
21:28 LLamaRider user_5087: which OS are you using? And how commited are you to using Padre?
21:29 user_5087 padre seems pretty lightweight for an ide, but i need all the help i can get, because again i am a noob
21:30 user_5087 so i need to install remote distribution in padre and have a svn url for...git?  or cpan and then get git from cpan?
21:30 LLamaRider boreas: there is an #xs channel on this network, with the occasional help. You can read perlapi and perlxs from the docs (perldoc, or google those)
21:30 moritz boreas: perldoc perlxs
21:30 LLamaRider boreas: I personally found this tutorial quite handy (an XS newbie myself): http://www.lemoda.net/xs/xs-intro/index.html
21:30 boreas user_5087: It would be easier as _Dave said to use the git CLI then just edit the files in Padre (if you choose)
21:30 boreas LLamaRider: thanks
21:31 SimonAW LLamaRider: Oh thanks
21:32 _Dave user_5087: minimise your learning curve
21:32 _Dave i'm sure there are git hooks for emacs but I don't use them
21:32 boreas _Dave: The learning with emacs is low right?
21:32 _Dave hahahahahahaha
21:32 _Dave it's a fine operating system
21:32 boreas agree
21:33 _Dave is this legit encoding?
21:33 _Dave <marker name="lorn" address="S<E3>o Paulo, Brazil" lat="-23.5505199" lng="-46.6333094" />
21:33 _Dave we'll see
21:33 haarg if you are on windows or mac, you might look at the GitHub app if the git cli is intimidating
21:33 _Dave actually, I don't use it
21:33 moritz _Dave: looks broken
21:33 _Dave is there a git version of Tortoise SVN?
21:34 _Dave moritz: i don't use it
21:34 _Dave github nick and lat/long is all
21:35 moritz tortoise git exists
21:36 boreas still one of my favorite images about emacs: http://www.terminally-incoherent.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2006/08/curves.jpg
21:37 dfluck Naturally, the Emacs one is the most beautiful. ;)
21:38 haarg there is a tortoise git, and some other explorer integrations for git
21:38 haarg i didn't particularly like them though
21:40 veryrusty joined #pr-challenge
21:40 haarg git is much less suitable for explorer integration imo.  svn being basically "file backup with history" matches much better with tools like that.
21:44 _Dave emacs: http://xkcd.com/378/
21:45 _Dave also: http://xkcd.com/1172/
21:47 _Dave new ActiveXObject('Microsoft.XMLHTTP') : is likely to be IE only, right?
21:49 haarg yes.  ie6 compatibility.

22:07 neilb _Dave: night. BTW, probably should just share anonymous locations. Have had someone explicitly saying they don’t want their details shared
22:07 _Dave hm
22:07 _Dave then null location on github :/
22:07 _Dave or leave it at country
22:09 _Dave and no response from davorg?
22:10 neilb nope, not so far. But I’ve got a lot of email to work through …

22:18 lejeunerenard _Dave: I updated my location on github and don't care if you share it.
22:19 SimonAW _Dave: same for me
22:19 tadzik I've MooSex::POE as my first assignment, sounds like fun :)
22:21 sawyer i've used that quite a bit
22:22 _Dave SimonAW: you're in Madagascar?

22:23 _Dave the alternative to blogs.perl.org is to get Gabor to collate our own blog links for perl weekly newsletter....or we collate them and send him links
22:24 pink_mist _Dave: I'd rather not give my location on github, but if you can still make use of it for your stats, it's Helsingborg, Sweden
22:24 _Dave no
22:24 _Dave just put nothing in githus
22:24 _Dave then I won't pick it up
22:24 _Dave and to start, it'll be anonymised anyhow
22:24 _Dave SLEEP! nite!
22:25 pink_mist yes, that's why I don't mind giving it for your stats; I just don't want it on github :/
22:25 _Dave no,not maintaining side files
22:26 jkg pink_mist: I think what _Dave means is "thank you, but I'd rather not maintain additional data, so I'm going to leave that out" ;-)
22:27 _Dave that
22:28 pink_mist ah, gotcha
22:29 nbezzala so, my module is DateTime-Format-Pg and I have no PR ideas...
22:30 SimonAW nbezzala: Test coverage at 100%?
22:30 nbezzala dunno.. ok, will check. thanks SimonAW
22:31 meredith there's an open issue on gh
22:31 SimonAW nbezzala: Or maybe you can also get in touch with the maintainer first. Maybe she/he has some item on the wishlist.
22:32 nbezzala ok
22:32 nbezzala done
22:33 nbezzala I mean.. done getting in touch with and asking...
22:34 meredith i haven't run into any other cpan dists that use yardoc to generate pod files
22:35 meredith it's really cute to have written something meant to be like minitest in perl and use yard while you're at it
22:36 sawyer nbezzala: check GH issues, RT tickets, and TODO lists
22:36 sawyer you can also grep for "FIXME" or "TODO" in the source to get ideas
22:38 * diocles sends a pr for README typos - cheating? :)
22:39 diocles https://github.com/clkao/IO-Digest/pull/2
22:39 jkg you can always submit more through the month ;)
22:39 SimonAW diocles: Low hanging fruits ;)
22:40 diocles I asked the maintainer if they wanted anything doing - but it looks like IO::Digest is stable rather than unmaintained.
22:40 jkg for some reason (I'm an idiot) I dived straight into old bugs marked "Important" on my chosen dist. and have absolutely no idea what I'm doing, so now I'm picking something else :-)
22:40 jkg (I mean, something else in that dist)

22:51 jashank ... I got MongoDB.  Oh boy.
22:52 dfluck Is that "oh boy" in a good way? :P
22:52 jashank dfluck: I don't know yet :P
22:52 jashank My previous experience with MongoDB was poking needles into an effigy built from random Ruby gems, and it really put me off it.

23:06 jashank Oh, this is a pretty fun project.  Pull requests happen through Github, but issues are tracked in MongoDB's JIRA instance, and so I'm now browsing the issue list, looking for something fun.
23:11 mstr after creating a branch, commting, pushing to GH and finally creating a PR -- what is it you do afterwards? merge that branch into your own master or leave everything as it is?
23:12 mstr i guess if upstream merges my PR i could just delete my branch and pull upstream master fresh.
23:14 mstr or maybe i'm thinking too much again and i'm the only one who goes loco about stuff like that?
23:16 dfluck mstr: No, that's a good question. I'm wondering the same thing.
23:16 dfluck mstr: I've never contributed to projects like this before. :)
23:17 jashank My experience is mixed.  Some people merge their PR onto their master (or whatever); some don't.  Personally, I don't.
23:22 kentnl joined #pr-challenge
23:22 jrhunt mstr: i would recommend against merging after you've submitted the PR
23:22 jrhunt there's always a chance you'll have to rework your patch
23:22 jrhunt and other stuff could happen on master in the interim
23:22 jashank Hm. dzil authordeps doesn't spew podweaver deps.
23:23 jrhunt leading to lots of headaches with merge conflicts and such
23:23 kentnl jashank: thats unfortunately a known caveat, and authors are encouraged to use comments in the dist.ini to convey that.
