00:33 jkg I like perl for a lot of things, and that is none of them :)
00:33 monsieurp hi!
00:35 kentnl jkg: yeah, personally, I wouldn't find myself making that, but I'm impressed that it exists and find it useful when I'm there, so I try to hide and ignore how it works :D
00:42 BHS_error hello monsieurp
00:42 neilb monsieurp: hi! You need to send me details for your friend. And congrats on being #258!
00:43 neilb I was holding off on sending you your assignment, hoping you might be sending me your friends details, and then I’d do you both
00:50 kentnl monsieurp: sup bra, fancy seeing you here :)

13:44 etheleon woah hi
14:15 sawyer etheleon: hi :)
14:18 vroom joined #pr-challenge
14:18 etheleon i'm a perl newbie
14:19 etheleon @sawyer
14:19 sawyer etheleon: welcome :)
14:20 etheleon so any idea when the pull request challenge will start?
14:20 etheleon does cpan support pull request or it's all gonna be on github?
14:20 etheleon just took the mastering github course on codeschool wanna try out what i've learnt
14:24 upasana etheleon: It has already started, email your PAUSE & github username to neilb, then he will assign some module to you! :)
14:24 etheleon i just did
14:24 sawyer then you should receive your project soon enough
14:24 upasana all the best :)
14:24 sawyer CPAN is just a mirror
14:25 sawyer when you upload a project you get a default ticket system called RT (rt.cpan.org is where it sits), but many use Github Issues instead
14:25 sawyer the PR challenge focuses on distributions that are on Github and use the Github Issues ticket system
14:27 jkg s/ and use.*// # I think? certainly the dist I got has code on GH but bugs in RT :-)
14:32 ambs joined #pr-challenge
14:33 ambs sawyer: you are quick :P
14:37 mstr i'm guessing he has a script running?
14:41 sawyer ambs: the opping? at first manual but then put in a script
14:41 sawyer well.. took a script and cleaned it up because OMFG it was so old...
14:41 sawyer "local (*CONF)", for example...
14:43 ambs :D
14:50 sawyer i thought about cleaning up all irssi scripts, but... this is the first one i actually found use for
14:51 ambs you can clean the next when you need it

15:22 jkg wheee, first PR merged. I can take 4 weeks off now, right? ;)
15:35 sawyer jkg++
15:35 sawyer you can do whatever you want
15:36 sawyer i made a small contribution to start with, and hope to come up with something more helpful with the author
15:36 sawyer i thought about this a little - it shouldn't really be a race for contribution but instead something you can show as "i helped improve this" instead
15:36 sawyer fixing a problem, adding a feature, documenting, etc.
15:37 ambs yep, I intend to do so if I have the time. My first contribution would be for the author side, but I lack knowledge for Module::Install
15:37 jkg yeah, I'm doing much the same; I submitted the simplest thing that could possibly help(tm), but I'm hoping to get bigger improvements in too, and the author's responiveness to email and PRs so far is encouraging me
15:40 sawyer that's great :)
15:40 ambs talking about module::install, anybody uses it? :D
15:41 sawyer ambs: quite a few, actually
15:41 sawyer some big projects too
15:41 ambs is there any way to specify which module::install::* the author needs to have?
15:42 ambs authordeps
16:23 mstr joined #pr-challenge
17:21 mstr how does one interact with a maintainer if there is no github repo of the dist in question?
17:22 mstr for that matter- is there some standard way every maintainer announces that his/her dist is on github?
17:22 ambs mstr: I do not think there is such a mechanism
17:22 thrig there's meta resources you can set in e.g. Makefile.PL or whatever
17:23 ambs mstr: but if you know the username of the maintainer, you can mail him @cpan.org mail.
17:23 mstr i'm guessing if metacpan doesn't show a link to github there is none..
17:23 ambs mstr: exactly
17:23 thrig or they forgot to setup meta resources, which might be a good PR
17:24 ambs or at least, not correctly configured
17:24 ambs ahahaha. thrig++
17:25 jkg mstr: hrm, I thought neilb was selecting dists based on there being a github repo specified in the meta.whatever files
17:25 jkg which would mean that situation wouldn't arise, I guess
17:26 mstr well i am done with my assigned dist. was just going thru his adoption list to see for other dists of interest
17:27 jkg ah :-)
17:34 thrig ... /me goes back to updating all his modules to include relevant info on how to actually build them ...

19:34 neilb Keeping blogging and tweeting! Someone just signed up, saying “all the blogging etc has got me excited — I want to join in!”
19:37 ambs \o/
19:38 Su-Shee I'm tempted to remind people that it's a marathon of ONE YEAR :)
19:39 mib_ysid5x joined #pr-challenge
19:41 ptc to be honest, I don't think I'd mind if the challenge (or something similar) continued indefinitely
19:41 ptc it's a great idea, especially to get people involved, and one PR per month isn't a huge time investment really
19:42 dfluck joined #pr-challenge
19:42 ptc however, you're right: it *is* a marathon :-)
19:42 ambs if in a year we still have people preparing PRs, who knows if neilb makes it longer.
19:43 neilb next year will be a different challenge :-)
19:44 ambs ah, good
19:44 neilb but hopefully some people will continue doing PRs as well...
19:45 Su-Shee I'm pretty sure that only half will actually REALLY do stuff and by the end of the year maybe 25% are left... and let's make it through the first quarter first :)
19:45 ambs my current fear is that the next assignment gets to the spam and I just forget to look there
19:46 Su-Shee ambs: make yourself a cronjob to remind you.
19:47 ambs :)
19:47 Su-Shee I really don't get how _technicians_ can actually say "I forgot" when they have cron jobs :)
19:48 ambs if I make too many I start automatically ignoring them
19:49 vairav joined #pr-challenge
19:49 Su-Shee ambs: well, then get creative. ;)
19:49 ambs :D
19:50 Su-Shee display a notification. send yourself a text/sms. send yourself an email. use an electronic calendar with a reminder. ask your mom to remember it and call you. ;)
19:51 moritz even if only 25% of 250+ people are left at the end of the year, I'd count it as a huge success
19:51 Su-Shee I agree.
19:51 Su-Shee but that's an optimistic estimation.
19:52 vairav joined #pr-challenge
19:53 Su-Shee I was thinking: somebody - a single poor soul - got an extremely central module like DBI. maybe make a list of _those_ modules and make a pr challenge team month where a group of people help on a central module, preferably after the author was contacted/agreed so that there's some actual management going on?
19:53 Su-Shee kind of a "important module cleanup month" where an author gets an entire crew :)
19:53 ambs yes, it might be hard to make a PR fr something like dbi
19:54 ambs nevertheless, docmentation is always an option.
19:54 ambs and there is no such thing liek too much documentation :D
19:55 Su-Shee that's not what I'm getting at. I'd like to make efficient use of people willing to do stuff and throw it more organized on these kinds of super important modules.
19:56 ambs ah, ok.
19:57 Su-Shee and you can REALLY clean up a lot of things in a month if you're five people and the author actually participiates.
19:57 Su-Shee (or group of authors/maintainers)
19:58 BRAD joined #pr-challenge
20:03 choroba we might benefit from something like that at work, too
20:03 choroba ;-)
20:05 ambs I have a ton of modules I would love help for!
20:06 Su-Shee well it's kind of a no-brainer that you actually get shit done if you're a group of people working focused on.. getting shit done :)
20:07 ambs unless you are meaning literally shit
