00:30 jrhunt heard back from my assignment's maint (post holidays and all)
00:30 jrhunt looks like Perl::Crypt::X509 is getting RFC-compliance and a new nameopt option!
00:31 jashank ... I wonder what happens if I accidentally wind up writing PRs for a package that is not my assigned one.
00:32 jashank (I'm fighting Git::Raw at work, and the documentation is incredibly lacking.)
00:32 jrhunt go for it
00:33 jrhunt it can be your Frobuary assignment :)
00:34 jashank jrhunt++ # for "Frobuary"
00:40 vroom joined #pr-challenge
00:45 neilb jashank: you could start working towards the prize for “done PRs for most different dists” :-)

00:45 neilb night all

02:52 jrhunt rjbs, you should have gotten an email from neilb
02:56 rjbs nope :'(

02:59 popl rjbs: I used my Gmail account and the assignment email ended up in the Spam folder.
03:00 popl rjbs: Are you using Gmail?
03:01 rjbs No.

03:02 * rjbs sees no likely mail in his Pobox spam section.
03:03 popl bummer.
03:03 popl rjbs: I think neil went to sleep, so you might have to catch him tomorrow.
03:04 rjbs yeah, I've tweeted at him :)

09:57 dfluck Morning! Well, it's morning here, anyway.
09:57 jkg timezone appropriate greetings, all ;)
09:57 moritz it's always morning in UGT! (Univerals Greeting Time)
09:58 jkg UGT++
09:58 dfluck I'm a fan of GMT: Greetings Mean Time. :P

10:01 moritz and in here it's UTC: Universal Time for Contributions :-)
10:01 dfluck At 4:00 AM it's pretty much time for bed lol.
10:01 dfluck But such is life in central time.
10:02 * moritz thinks from a UTC perspective, "central" time is pretty much off-center :-)
10:08 Su-Shee folks, wishing somebody a good morning still applies even when somebody has a lot later morning than I do.. and: who doesn't need a good morning?!
10:08 Su-Shee why does everybody think that it only applies to the present...
10:08 moritz Su-Shee: just let us a geek around a bit :-)
10:08 jkg I'm going to start using "may your next or current morning be as excellent as you could wish"
10:09 moritz "may the mornings ever be in your favor"
10:09 Su-Shee exactly.
10:09 jkg moritz++
10:10 dfluck Having a good morning requires me to be awake for it, though. :P
10:10 dfluck (Context: college student on vacation.)
10:10 moritz dfluck: mornings slept through are the best mornings, IMHO
10:10 Su-Shee well I had little dutch pancakes and slices of bacon and hot coffee, freshly ground and a hot shower and a cat purring at my feet.. pretty good.
10:11 jkg I woke up at 0530 this morning. it was _much_ improved by going back to sleep for an hour or so :-)
10:11 dfluck I DID wake up around 5:00 AM for one weekend. Actually used the morning time for a personal project, which was nice.
10:13 Su-Shee jkg: I went to bed at 1, stupidly assuming I would be able to sleep after two weeks of getting to sleep at 3.. of course I did not. (as witnessed on twitter, so didn't ashley and ilmari and osfameron and.. ;)

14:18 Relequestual I've been assigned my project for Jan. Contacting the owner. Anyone I should cc?
14:21 daveh Nah
14:21 daveh just rubber ducky on here
14:22 Relequestual just checking
14:24 daveh neilb knows if there's a closely related module
14:24 vroom joined #pr-challenge
14:24 neilb daveh: huh?
14:26 daveh Relequestual was wondering who else to cc
14:27 pink_mist daveh: I think Relequestual was more asking if neilb needs to be cc'd to be able to keep track
14:28 pink_mist (but of course I may be wrong)
14:28 daveh Relequestual: get the problem reports on github and comment there
14:28 daveh i didn't read it that way :)
14:28 daveh YMMV

14:28 Relequestual I didn't know of anyone specifically... just generally
14:29 Relequestual =]
14:29 Relequestual anyone who would help / be a kind of mentor for us who know little haha
14:30 jkg the google group and this channel are good for that, a lot of people have been giving really good git workflow advice and stuff
14:31 Relequestual ah ok
14:31 Relequestual thanks

16:05 neilb most common comment in signups: “not Win32 please” :-)
16:07 * jrhunt hadn't thought of that.
16:07 jrhunt not win32 please...
16:07 Su-Shee oh god yes, no windows.. indeed. I didn't think of that either.
16:09 thrig good for reading PDFs on. bad for development
16:11 * neilb takes notes, Win32 for Su-Shee next time …
16:11 Su-Shee sadly, I will suddenly be very ill. ;)
16:12 jkg on that basis ... I'd like a Win32-specific dist with _lots_ of XS, no documentation, and no updates since 1997, please!
16:12 Su-Shee neilb: DID YOU SEE THAT?
16:12 neilb jkg++
16:13 neilb you all heard him
16:13 Su-Shee we did.
16:13 jkg if you can find a dist which is on github and meets all those criteria, I'll take it :-)
16:13 alh I bet bulk88 knows a few
16:14 neilb I’ve got a month to (find someone to) write one! >;-)
16:14 jkg and conspiring to get it onto github in the next 4 weeks is Cheating ;)
16:15 Su-Shee I think it's called "rebase" in git ;)
16:15 jkg I was initially a tiny bit disappointed with my assignment, but I have to say, having poked at it a bit, I'm enjoying it, learning about stuff, and making progress towards fixing some bits. which ... it's almost like this challenge is working as intended.
16:15 jkg so I may have already said it, but, neilb: thanks for putting this together :)
16:16 haarg jkg: Win32::Daemon
16:16 Su-Shee jkg: I totally love that I absolutely hate my assignment. it has everything I never use :)
16:16 Su-Shee but it's very nice code actually.
16:16 jkg Su-Shee: heh, yes, that :)
16:16 haarg (not quite 1997, but not really far off)
16:16 neilb And *that* is why you’ll both be getting a Win32 module next month: it’s good for you.
16:17 jkg haarg: heh. I should know better than to tempt people into finding stuff like this ;)
16:17 neilb jkg: ta, I’ll take that feedback now, since you might retract it later this month…
16:17 Su-Shee neilb: well I wrote at least a perl application once which had to run on NT :)
16:19 Su-Shee neilb: but I really wonder how my assignment made it into your list. it has only 2 issues altogether, is clean code, is used by a dozen other modules - it just wasn't updated for 3 years.
16:20 Su-Shee (my guess because "finished")
16:20 Su-Shee and one issue isn't even an issue but a speed complaint
16:21 neilb it got on because: has issues and is used by other dists
16:21 Su-Shee ah.
16:21 neilb I’ll be tuning the selection algorithm for Feb.
16:21 Su-Shee do you count only RT issues?
16:28 neilb At the moment, yes. Will be changing that so github issues will count too
16:29 Su-Shee oh that will change a lot I'm guessing
16:40 jkg ah, counting github issues would be awesome, I'd (marginally) prefer to work on a dist with those rather than RT -- not that it makes a significant difference
16:52 neilb I’ll write a blog about how I plan to select dists for Feb, and give everyone chance to suggest additions. Hopefully before the end of Jan :-)
16:59 Su-Shee "... and then I thought I go with my vicious side and assigned everyone what they hate the most. Coming to realize how awesome power is..." :)

19:01 jrhunt does getting issues closed, without having to do any coding, count?
19:02 pink_mist as long as you do it through a pull request, probably :P
19:04 mvuets jrhunt: make an empty commit (git commit --allow-empty), put the issue description and your resolution and PR it! (o:

20:15 Su-Shee more docs? better docs? more examples?
20:18 thrig kwalitee whoring?
20:18 thrig (or email that niel guy and indicate module should be pulled from the rotation so 11 others don't get it?)
20:20 eam how are the modules selected? Perhaps I could submit a PR for that tool :D
20:20 sawyer that tool is not public yet
20:21 eam ah
20:22 thrig ostensibly it's in perl, but mostly it's hacked together with lisp
20:22 mvuets eam: you could ask neilb to shake his magic 8 ball one more time
20:22 sawyer i would indeed recommend contacting "that neil guy" and saying there's nothing to do with it
20:22 sawyer and to assign you with a different one
20:22 sawyer mistakes happen
20:23 eam sure, will do. I'll just pick another at random

23:06 trs no
23:06 trs https://groups.google.com/forum/#!forum/cpan-pr-challenge
23:09 neilb 293 people have been sent an assignment so far for January
23:09 BooK my vague memory of google groups is that one needs a google account to subscribe (or some similar constraint)
23:10 Su-Shee almost 300 ... wow. that is almost a yapc::eu now
23:10 thrig sparta!
23:11 trs BooK: yes, that is correct.
23:11 trs afaik
23:12 BooK and then I have to receive the mail on that address that I don't use. and possibly use that to post as well. :-(
23:12 neilb Oh, I thought you could just sign up with any email address, is that not right?
23:12 trs no, you can use a google account to sign up with any address
23:13 trs (after verification)
23:13 trs so, I have an @gmail.com address I don't use, but mail for that list goes to my @cpan.org address for example.
