06:16 nbezzala https://github.com/lestrrat/DateTime-Format-Pg/blob/master/lib/DateTime/Format/Pg.pm ... if you go to the sub parse_duration on line 562
06:16 nbezzala you will see a big long regexp
06:16 nbezzala what is the best way to work with it and debug it?
06:17 trs nbezzala: Regexp::Debugger (rxrx) might be useful here.
06:18 trs also, you can link to a particular source line on github by clicking on the line number before copying the address, or by appending, for example, "#L562" to the URL
06:19 nbezzala ah, thats good to know. thanks trs
06:27 nbezzala where do we paste?
06:28 popl paste what?
06:29 nbezzala code
06:29 popl anywhere but pastebin.com :)
06:29 popl http://paste.scsys.co.uk is good
06:30 popl shadowpaste isn't in here, though.
06:30 popl so you'll have to show us the resulting URL so we can see it.
06:31 nbezzala ok, thanks

07:35 Su-Shee good morning everyone
07:36 nbezzala so on https://github.com/lestrrat/DateTime-Format-Pg/blob/master/lib/DateTime/Format/Pg.pm, can someone please try and confirm that the tests are failing for t/parse_interval.t
07:37 nbezzala but the same thing works here for '1 millenium' for example  http://paste.scsys.co.uk/453566
07:39 nbezzala hmm.. it does fail for me for '1 mon - 1 days'
07:39 nbezzala maybe I should just work on this one first...
07:40 nbezzala no, that was because of the space. It should be '1 mon -1 days'

14:32 * neilb is waiting with bated breath
14:32 daveh mine is baited
14:34 Su-Shee neilb: how many by now? :)
14:34 neilb 329

14:35 neilb nearly made it to a YAPC now. Signups have really slowed today — roughly 1 per hour
14:36 Su-Shee "slowed down" .. "one per hour" .. ;)
14:37 Relequestual YAPC?
14:38 Relequestual oh I see
14:50 athos hi all! wow, it is a lot of ppl!!! that's great :)
14:50 daveh victim of your own success?
14:55 daveh Rule Financial seem a little desperate
14:57 ptc neilb++
14:57 sue if it's slowing, i suppose i should post another reminder to the london pm list :-)
14:58 neilb don’t feel you need to :-)
14:58 sue oh, it's no bother at all
14:59 sue with our fancy new lists we got from some nice YAPC attendees
15:00 sue the conference was extra-useful this year :-)
15:00 moritz neilb: how do you feel about making the assignments public? After the discussion on the mailing list, my proposal would be include a disclaimer in the mail for the February assignment, wait a few days (or a week) for people who want to opt out, and then make it public
15:01 neilb yeah, my plan is to make a list available of: github-id -> dist & repo
15:01 neilb but need to make sure everyone’s ok with that first (it’s all public info, but still)
15:02 neilb focus right now is helping everyone get started and answering questions I get in email
15:02 moritz sure, no hurry
15:02 moritz if you need help in any way, do speak up
15:02 moritz I guess there'll be some volunteers here (me included)
15:16 daveh So, building an FAQ?
15:21 jkg neilb++ # handling the order of magnitude bigger than expected uptake :)

15:55 estrabd neilb: do we need to report when we've made a PR?
15:56 neilb estrabd: not when you’ve done a PR, but when you’ve decided you’re finished with the dist.
15:56 estrabd roger that, thank you
15:56 neilb you might want to do more PRs, or you might want to see if it gets merged
15:57 neilb then you can either email me, or ping me here. I just need to know your github username
15:57 estrabd sounds good
16:00 * neilb sobs quiet tears into the internet explorer well of depair
16:04 jb360 Hello.  Does anyone here happen to know anything about Alien or the iup library?
16:13 daveh narp
16:22 neilb jb360: Joel Berger blogged about something to do with Alien on blogs.perl.org, you could try him. He’s not in this channel, but dunno if he’s in #perl, for example
16:24 jb360 neilb: Thanks Neil.  I emailed the module owner for more information too.  I'm just trying to find out what I can about it.

17:58 isBEKaml that's a trickle :-)
17:59 isBEKaml Considering all this talk about YAPC, isn't a conference more about a hub of activity with people milling around?
18:00 isBEKaml (I have *never* been to any conference)
18:01 hunter I am hoping to go this year for the first time
18:01 hunter trying to get my work to comp it though :|
18:05 isBEKaml should be fun ;-)

19:53 thrig hmm. how do you create a second pull? e.g from https://github.com/thrig/Test-Cmd/commit/42429e941646f0783a4c1c6e6133c5a72824c86f following the pull for https://github.com/thrig/Test-Cmd/commit/796e890b23648d7a0a591a49346374244b90ab76
19:54 ivanwills joined #pr-challenge
19:55 haarg thrig: pull requests are based on branches
19:56 haarg if you want to have a separate pr, it needs to be in a separate branch
19:56 thrig hmm. I should use those more, I guess
20:22 neilb thrig: or you could wait and see what happens with the first before doing a second.

20:42 BooK neilb: are the rules documented somewhere?
20:42 BooK I know you're a "strict rules" person, so they have to written down ;-)
20:43 neilb 1. Always listen to Buck
20:43 neilb Actually, the first rule of CPAN Club is …
20:44 popl post everything to RT?
20:46 neilb BooK: ok, so not really. It’s not my list, but basically: do a PR on your assigned dist before the end of the month. let me know when it’s done. Try hard to do something to improve the dist. Be polite and respectful. Blog and tweet. Help others. Hug your children (optional).
20:49 Su-Shee I was going to pet my cat...
20:50 neilb WAS THAT ON THE LIST?!
20:50 thrig there's no hug... alloc_hugepages(2) and free_hugepages come up, though.
20:51 Su-Shee no. I'm a rebel.
20:51 Su-Shee also, I would need to get pregnant first and actually deliver a child. doable during the challenge, no question, but I can't perl while in labour.
20:52 neilb haarg++
21:02 BooK ok. I just picked the single issue on my assigned dist, and tried to see what needs to be done. waiting for feedback atm, but I think I already know the answer

22:27 genehack where do i go to opt out of hearing about anybody else opting in to their assignment being public?
22:27 genehack asking for a friend.
22:31 neilb genehack: on the procmail mailing list? ;-)
22:31 neilb more seriously, I’ll just email saying people should just email me directly to opt out, else I’ll assume ‘yes'
22:32 genehack neilb++ # i was mostly joking but thank you

22:55 mulander neilb: nice idea with the pr challenge - I haven't done any perl since 2004, you got me back for a while :)
22:56 neilb You might want to start by skimming the Modern Perl book, which is available free online: http://modernperlbooks.com/books/modern_perl_2014/
22:56 neilb it’s only been 10 years I know … :-)
22:56 mulander already did, you prepped really good materials for diving back in
22:56 mulander though I had the 'luck' of getting a tiny plugin for a large system (dist:zilla)
22:57 mulander waiting for the dependencies to finish finally building :)
22:57 mulander also quite hard to add features to a generally feature complete plugin 'copy file from one folder to another' - I guess adding tests & code coverage is fair game?
22:58 Su-Shee mulander: better docs also welcome, always.
22:58 Su-Shee mulander: or nicer examples..
22:58 mulander the docs are actually really good with that plugin
22:58 mulander https://github.com/mulander/Dist-Zilla-Plugin-CopyFilesFromBuild
22:58 mulander ^ imho good docs but 0 tests
22:58 thrig it's just copying files, what could go wrong?
22:59 mulander oh just nfs, symlinks, existing target files to name a few
22:59 thrig ... 0 sized /etc/passwd file across your fleet thanks to $goobers_in_security_dept ...
23:00 mulander out of disk space, denied permissions
23:00 mulander the list goes on ;)
23:01 neilb mulander: maybe you could ask on #distzilla what things are good to check on DZ plugins. Would be useful to have a standard list of things that people can check, as there are quite a few plugins out there.
23:01 mulander neilb: good idea, I started by looking at other similar plugins with existing code coverage to get some ideas
23:01 haarg and there are good people there to ask about writing dzil tests
23:02 thrig <@ether> in case it helps, this is the template for the file I insert into my Dist::Zilla-based dists -- https://github.com/karenetheridge/Dist-Zilla-PluginBundle-Author-ETHER/blob/master/share/CONTRIBUTING
23:02 thrig (in the event they neglect to tell you how to build the damn thing)
23:02 * haarg created CopyFilesFromRelease based on CopyFilesFromBuild.  mine doesn't have any tests either.
23:03 mulander haarg: I saw that one :)
23:04 haarg i recently handed it over to someone else though, since i usually don't use dzil
23:05 mulander well I'm far from the code yet
23:05 mulander can't get dzil to even install
23:06 Su-Shee I'm hopefully done this weekend with mine.. but the code looks very clean anyways, so I'll just fix a little bug and a speed issue and correct minor grammar things in the docs
23:08 haarg Dist::Zilla is an author tool, so even more than other modules it isn't shy about using lots of deps
23:09 haarg if you have problems though, feel free to ask
23:22 mulander haarg: I'm mostly blocked by dependencies - though not sure if it's the dep fault, my systems fault or is it because I use cpanp (and not cpan)
23:23 mulander but I don't feel like installing bare cpan packages outside of my distros package manager
23:23 Su-Shee mulander: perlbrew is your friend in the challenge..
23:24 vroom joined #pr-challenge
23:24 haarg perlbrew or local::lib are good options for that.  trying to use os packages for something like dzil is likely to be painful.
23:25 mulander Su-Shee: thanks I'll give it a go
23:26 Su-Shee mulander: it's pretty easy to use, too. I just threw in a range of perl versions and install the modules in all of them and just change
23:26 mulander Su-Shee: I suspect it works like python venv - though funny that searches didn't bring it up
23:26 Su-Shee mulander: better imho, but you can also use plenv :)
23:27 haarg local::lib will let you use the system perl (and any modules installed there) but with a separate lib dir for yourself or your apps that won't interfere with the system
23:28 haarg perlbrew will let you easily install any perl versions you want and do whatever you want with them
