00:51 mib_j0f1bg where's the assignment list and how's it determined? somebody was assigned one of my modules that has no bugs, so seems like a waste.
00:55 thrig email neilb?
00:57 mib_j0f1bg not a very open process then if it behind emails and a subsciber-only google group.
00:57 pink_mist mib_j0f1bg: you can read about the challenge here, including wherefrom the dists selected come: http://blogs.perl.org/users/neilb/2014/12/take-the-2015-cpan-pull-request-challenge.html
00:58 mib_j0f1bg none of my dists are listed in http://neilb.org/adoption/  and the dist isn't used by anything so not sure why it was included in this.
00:58 mib_j0f1bg i did read that already
00:59 mib_j0f1bg the "contributor" opened a ticket saying he was assigned my dist and asked if there was anything he could do. if that's happening to many people, it's a big waste of time.
01:00 mib_j0f1bg they should only be assigned something if there's outstanding bugs or todo items
01:00 pink_mist well, as things are only just starting up, and neil got a lot more response to this than he anticipated, he was kindof caught off balance, and so he's still working on refining the selection process... once he's done that I'm sure you'll see a blog post about how he's doing things
01:01 thrig project manager for 329+ cats and assorted module owners, oh, boy!
01:01 mib_j0f1bg well, i would suggest don't set loose clueless people to bug other people if they don't have a purpose
01:04 pink_mist I honestly don't see the problem -- you got an offer for help if you wanted it; you can just say "no need"
01:04 trapor joined #pr-challenge
01:04 trapor hi!
01:06 mib_j0f1bg multiply that by many more people and it wastes a lot of time
01:06 trapor I am trying to install Module::Install
01:06 mib_j0f1bg it's basically a form of spam
01:06 pink_mist wow, I totally disagree.
01:07 mib_j0f1bg since you're not on the receiving end doesn't matter what you think
01:07 pink_mist but what is your PAUSE id? I'm sure we can ask neil to remove your modules from consideration
01:07 trapor but I get
01:07 trapor ! Installing the dependencies failed: Module 'ExtUtils::Config' is not installed
01:08 trapor cpanm Module::Install
01:08 trapor maybe I am missing something
01:08 trapor any clues ?
01:08 mib_j0f1bg i know how to follow up with him, i'm just saying it would be best not to waste time if there's no reason to
01:08 thrig does the cpanm build log show anything?
01:08 ribasushi mib_j0f1bg: there was a notification before the process started (in the form of a blogpost), which spelled out the opt-out procedure
01:09 mib_j0f1bg opt-out is always a bad idea
01:09 trapor thrig, yeah Successfully installed ExtUtils-Config-0.008
01:09 trapor ! Installing the dependencies failed: Module 'ExtUtils::Config' is not installed
01:09 trapor Successfully installed ExtUtils-Config-0.008
01:09 trapor ! Installing the dependencies failed: Module 'ExtUtils::Config' is not installed
01:09 ribasushi mib_j0f1bg: while I recognize the "annoynace/spam" factor of an opt-out system, it was deemed a reasonable sacrifice for something that wa suspposed toi attract 20-odd people
01:09 trapor contraditory info

08:51 pink_mist neilb: what's the latest number? =)
08:52 pink_mist and good morning all
08:53 neilb pink_mist: it’s 328 at the moment, dropped 2 since the high-point of 330 last night. But I’m just working through my morning mailbox, and have 2 signups so far. Only had a handful of signups yesterday, so I’m guessing we’ll settle down somewhere around the 350 mark. And then it will start slowly going down … :-)
08:56 ptc morning *

17:57 mrcaron Hi folks!
17:57 mrcaron I just created my first pull request for the PRC :D
17:57 mrcaron https://github.com/lukec/cpan-selenium-rc-perl/pull/9
17:58 mrcaron I've tried to email mattp and luke, but no response. I'm hoping I get traction on the PR.
17:58 mrcaron ciao
18:01 daveh RenatoCRON: no, it's just me getting the right things decoded and encoded

18:44 RenatoCRON daveh, oh, I understood now. I like to use 'Atenção À Côté'
18:45 RenatoCRON 'Atenção'[pt-br] means 'attention' and 'à côté'[fr] means 'next to'
18:48 * RenatoCRON for sure miyagawa use single japonese char for testing unicode! haha
18:51 BooK neilb: I have uncovered your secret plan
18:52 BooK you've found it! you've found the way to tap into people's hidden tuit stack, and you distribute the tuits to CPAN authors
18:53 BooK a crazy plan, but it worked!
18:59 ambs BooK: :)
19:00 neilb BooK: you might think so, but I couldn’t possibly comment
19:05 ambs something that isn’t working that well: when the module author doesn’t answer.
19:07 kanashiro I agree ambs
19:08 ribasushi I personally trying to "solve" that is wrong
19:08 ribasushi a lot of participants got the right idea of "hi I got your module, what do you need help with"
19:09 ribasushi doing th work first and acting entitled to a response isn't... constructive ;)
19:09 ribasushi s/I personally/I personally think/ # brain elsewhere
19:10 ambs my example is: I got a module that was broken (tests failing) so there was something natural to solve. If I contacted the owner I would be still waiting for an answer, and probably I would never fix it.
19:11 ambs but will poke him :P
19:12 thrig if unresponsive, start the module adoption process
19:14 ribasushi thrig: if unresponsive to a bugfix - borderline
19:14 ambs thrig: yeah, more one, less one module to maintain :)
19:15 ribasushi if unresponsive to improvements they do not consider as such - resorting to adoption is downright problematic
19:16 * ribasushi is not condoning unresponsiveness, but points out that considering it a prerequisite is very un-cpan-ish

19:53 ambs hmms
19:54 mvuets github.com won't show, need to clone locally though
19:54 ambs yeah, I have it locally
19:54 ambs thanks

20:59 ambs oops :D
21:00 ambs a new module*
21:00 thrig please, take my module
21:01 ambs and don’t even use it
21:06 cary-elvis i made a pull request, github automatically emails project owner, right?
21:06 ambs yes, it does
21:07 ambs neverthless, if in a couple of days you do not get any answer, try to e’mail the author directly
21:07 ambs filters and the like can take github e-mails to somewhere dark :D
21:07 cary-elvis he hasn't contacted yet, but i can wait
21:08 ambs :)
21:14 trs github's email notifications are notoriously bad.
21:14 trs as in, they often don't get sent.
21:14 trs or never make it to the receiving end (not just filtered by the user)
21:15 ether you might want to consider also making an RT ticket, especially if the module has multiple maintainers. the person most able to release right now may not be the same person who released last
21:15 ether (especially if the last release was some time ago)
21:16 ether I've been discovering PRs sitting unnoticed in someone else's repo after I've adopted a module; if there was an RT ticket I'd have been aware of it
21:17 cary-elvis maybe i'll email him then. there has been no activity on his github account for over a year
