00:03 pink_mist really should only pick those that match t/*.t
00:04 pink_mist there are many usecases where putting files that don't match those into the t/ dir are valid
00:05 popl pink_mist: like?
00:06 pink_mist if your tests need resources from files, putting those in the t/ dir is perfectly reasonable
00:09 popl pink_mist: oh, I see what you mean.
00:10 popl pink_mist: The part of me that likes things tidy twitches at the idea, though.
00:12 choroba I'll try to raise the issue in Dist::Zilla @ github
00:12 pink_mist popl: I am normally one of those who has such OCD that he prefers spelling it 'CDO' becuase that's the alphabetical order :P but t/ dirs sometimes need to be slightly messy =/

17:35 ambs neilb: when you have some free time (I know, I know) it would be great to have a webservice to random select a CPAN dist (probably with some different type of options)
17:36 manchicken joined #pr-challenge
17:55 neilb ambs: so people can pick their own dists you mean, or just a slot machine for “show me a random dist”?
17:56 ambs slot machine.
17:56 ambs imagine someone want to do something like the PR-Challenge
17:56 ambs every week, or so.
17:57 thrig (possibly weighted with the most excellent Math::Random::Discrete)
17:57 ambs thrig: you forgot the <pub> .. </pub> :D
18:05 monsieurp neilb: You've got mail
18:07 neilb monsieurp: got it, marked you as done. Not even half-way through the month.
18:07 monsieurp neilb: I saw the message your wrote yesterday (I had to leave, sorry). Have a look at the PR, I have refactored the code as you advised. :)
18:07 monsieurp *you
18:07 neilb cool, will take a look now
18:10 neilb monsieurp: nice. let me know what happens!
18:13 monsieurp sure
18:13 monsieurp :)
18:16 ptc neilb: do you wait for feedback from participants to find out if they've submitted a PR?
18:16 mstr joined #pr-challenge
18:17 neilb ptc: people might submit multiple PRs for the same dist. When you’re really done, send me emai with your github username, saying “I’m done”.
18:17 ptc ah, ok
18:18 ptc atm I'm waiting for peregrin to look at the PRs and hopefully merge them sometime
18:19 ptc I don't want to annoy the maintainer too much, hence have been quiet about the PRs I've submitted
18:19 monsieurp actually, and we discussed this topic yesterday with Su-Shee: when the author of the module I'm working on receives the PR, he doesn't *have* *to* to merge it
18:19 monsieurp right?
18:20 Su-Shee monsieurp: yes.
18:20 Su-Shee monsieurp: he/she can ignore you happily ;)
18:20 monsieurp :(
18:21 Su-Shee yeah well. be prepared.
18:21 monsieurp :'(
18:21 Su-Shee when you press pull request on github nothing happens but offering a pull request
18:22 neilb One thing that helps is doing as much of the maintainer’s job for her or him.
18:23 neilb For example, did you add entries to the Changes file?
18:23 monsieurp :!
18:23 ptc I'm prepared for that
18:23 monsieurp I did not
18:23 ptc have already talked to maintainer on irc, but they haven't had time to look at things yet
18:24 neilb if you love your PR, you have to set it free.
18:24 mvuets joined #pr-challenge
18:24 ptc the PRs are free and in the world :-)
18:25 neilb I’ve had PRs merged many months later. Hopefully that won’t happen too often for participants, but we may all get onto a “rolling schedule”, where you submit PRs, and sometime later while working on a later PR, you get the nice surprise of an earlier PR being merged
18:25 ptc however, since they (theoretically) close all currently open RT tickets, it'd be really nice to say things are "done" as soon as that happens
18:25 boreas joined #pr-challenge
18:25 Su-Shee i prepared my PRs, mailed the author, did the work and now I just wait and don't care actually if it gets included or not
18:26 mvuets not with that attitude
18:26 Su-Shee mvuets: nothing to do with attitude. the module looks pretty finished, there is actually no real reason to touch it
18:26 Su-Shee mvuets: which would be perfectly sensible
18:26 Su-Shee mvuets: so I don't care.
18:27 ambs yeah, it might depend on the PR itself
18:27 ambs if you are fixing a bug and, even if you do not use that module, you would like to see it fixed.
18:27 Su-Shee that too. any author is perfectly free to absolutely hate your code and not include it. that may hurt your ego. ;)
18:28 neilb part of the goal of the challenge is that together we will gradually improve CPAN for all of us. Some PRs might never get merged, but a lot will, so things move forward
18:28 mvuets Su-Shee: ah, too many perfect dists out there
18:28 neilb And some ignored PRs may end up becoming adoptions down the road …
18:29 Su-Shee mvuets: I did not say such thing. but I'm certainly not seeing it as an ego issue if the author doesn't have time, didn't like my code or my fix, doesn't want to touch things or whatever..
18:29 ptc neilb: is there some rough running definition for "I'm done" atm?
18:29 Su-Shee neilb: exactly. and if some are not included.. so what.
18:30 ambs ptc: the PR is on github
18:30 ptc neilb: I was thinking of waiting until the end of the month to see if anything happens before making a statement about "doneness"
18:30 ambs ptc: I think :)
18:30 ptc ambs: that's a good definition :-)
18:30 ambs :D
18:31 neilb ptc: that’s fine. you might say you’re done when you’ve submitted a PR. Or you might wait to see if it’s merged. The author might ask you to modify your PR, so you do those, get the PR accepted, and then you claim “done!”
18:31 ptc oh well, in which case, I'm done :-)
18:31 Su-Shee me too.
18:31 neilb github user ids please!
18:32 ptc neilb: do you want an email as confirmation?
18:32 ambs I am trying to see if the patch gets merged (some user already thanked for it). But if in a couple of weeks there are no news, I’ll mail neilb with the “I’m finished” statement.
18:32 ptc oops, sorry: paultcochrane
18:32 neilb no, that’s fine.
18:32 neilb I just don’t remember everyone’s IRC nick -> github mapping :-)
18:32 ptc just wondered if there were some kind of automatic way you might be processing all of the info you're getting :-)
18:32 neilb ptc: marked you as done
18:33 ptc neilb: ptc was taken when I signed up for github *sigh*
18:33 jkg IDGI, why doesn't everybody just keep their IRC nick, github ID, twitter ID, and PAUSE ID in sync? :)
18:33 neilb ptc: yeah, ‘neilb’ was already taken on github, so I’m neilbowers there :-(
18:33 jkg there's at least one other jkg who beat me to keybase and bitbucket though :(
18:33 Su-Shee neilb: "Su-Shee"
18:34 neilb MouseX-NativeTraits done!
18:34 ptc jkg: I've been ptc on irc for like ages (also my PAUSE id), however that's a nick/id which taken very quickly
18:34 jkg neilb: if I say I'm done, then do more, does anything bad happen?
18:34 ambs jkg: well, just my twitter isn’t in sync
18:34 ptc I've found that my twitter account name eats into the 140 char limit quite a lot, which is something I didn't really think about at the beginning either...
18:34 neilb jkg: yeah, you’re out man!
18:35 jkg neilb: ah, shame, I'll hang on then ;)
18:35 neilb jkg: joking aside, no, once you claim you’re done, you can keep doing more PRs.
18:35 neilb I often have further ideas for a dist after doing a first PR
18:36 jkg I have ideas, but my month has gone a bit crazy and I'm mostly relieved I got the first one in when I did :)
18:36 jkg so on that basis: neilb: I'm done! (jkg on github, RPC-XML)
18:37 neilb jkg: updated!
18:37 * jkg takes three weeks off.
18:38 Su-Shee egotistically, I will do more work for the modules I like and actually use. ;)
18:38 jkg Su-Shee: preferring to work on code you like and use?! heresy!
18:39 Su-Shee yes!
18:56 sue it's only 7pm but it feels much later
