00:51 itcharlie Hello. I have been assigned the following module for this month's challenge :  Poe::Component::DirWatch   https://github.com/arcanez/poe-component-dirwatch
00:51 itcharlie looking at the bug list in both cpan website and github I see that there is only 1 issue open which has been resolved with a Pull request made by a developer  ( https://github.com/arcanez/poe-component-dirwatch/pull/1 )
00:51 itcharlie Can I be assigned a different module since this one doesn't have any issues marked as open ?
00:52 rjbs I have filed https://github.com/briandfoy/test-file/pull/11
00:52 rjbs itcharlie: I had fun looking through my assigned dist to find something I could improve without needing an open bug.  Given it a look yet?
00:53 rjbs itcharlie: It looks like that library uses Moose, but never says "no Moose", so it will appear to have a ->has method, which is a clear bug.
00:55 itcharlie rjbs:  thanks I will take a further look at this module then.
00:57 itcharlie This is an opportunity to learn some moose. :)  thanks
00:59 rjbs good luck! :)
01:06 ether note that 'use namespace::autoclean' is generally recommended over 'no Moose' now
01:06 ether TEst::CleanNamespaces can be used to check for issues like these

09:42 monsieurp neilb: hi
09:45 monsieurp would it be possible to take on another package even though I'm done with my PR?
09:45 neilb monsieurp: sure, just wait 18 days ;-)
09:46 monsieurp ahah
09:46 monsieurp fair enough
09:46 Relequestual haha =]
09:46 Relequestual I need to find time to look at mine =]
09:46 neilb If you’re looking for another challenge, I could build a list of good dists that aren’t on github, and you could try and get the author to put the dist on github
09:46 neilb that would be awesome, and then you could do a PR on it!
09:47 neilb extra credit and all that
09:48 * Su-Shee is working on her first own CPAN module.. :)
09:49 neilb \o/
09:49 neilb monsieurp: you could do a PR on Su-Shee’s module!
09:49 Su-Shee yes! but maybe wait until it's actually there!
09:50 * neilb waits impatiently
09:51 Su-Shee neilb: running out of cpanpr challenge modules? ;)
09:51 Su-Shee it's just a scratching an itch module anyways.
09:51 neilb nope, we’ve still got plenty to go round, even with 350 people having assignments right now! :-o
09:53 Su-Shee neilb: I'm so curious how many will actually have participiated in the end...
09:58 monsieurp neilb: yeah, sounds like a good idea
09:58 monsieurp actually
09:59 monsieurp if only I could get paid to work on open source projects all the time :(
09:59 neilb cool. I’ll build that list, then. probably tonight
09:59 monsieurp and spend more time on Gentoo and do cool stuff
10:01 vti neilb: 350?? wow
10:02 Su-Shee vti: that's an average yapc::eu of people :)
10:05 neilb Su-Shee: the realist in me thinks we might have 50 left by year end, the optimist says “no, LOTS more than that!”
10:05 Su-Shee neilb: I agree with the realist.
10:06 Su-Shee neilb: these kinds of things don't have any better retention rate than marketing emails ;)
10:06 Su-Shee neilb: also imagine what you could do with 35 people left who REALLY did some stuff..
10:07 Su-Shee neilb: imagine those 35 really worked in groups of 5 on more complicated stuff in december '15 ..
10:07 neilb fizackly! And I only expected about 15, so 35 would still be awesome.
10:08 vti neilb: if you keep kicking everybody's butt... :)
10:08 Su-Shee yeah but he has to keep that up as well :)
10:09 neilb vti: I thought when people email me asking to be dropped, I could mail back with: GET BACK TO YOUR KEYBOARD, YOU AIN’T GOING NOWHERE ’TIL YOU GET THAT PR DONE!
10:09 neilb But nice neilb wins every time. at the moment.
10:09 vti neilb: and publish their name and email!
10:09 vti and their address too
10:09 mvuets what's the turn over rate?
10:10 neilb the last 5 days we’re roughly in equilibrium: one or two drop out per day, one or two join.
10:11 Su-Shee my first guess is that at the end of january already only half will actually have done their challenge.
10:11 Su-Shee neilb: interesting.
10:11 mvuets wonder why they drop right after signing up *shrugs**
10:11 vti neilb: shouldn't everybody send you a PR proof and then you make a checkbox on some website online? and we all see how's everybody doing
10:12 Su-Shee vti: proof, hm? ;)
10:12 Su-Shee vti: you can just check automatically via github's API
10:12 neilb yeah
10:13 vti yeah, but that requires coding :D
10:13 neilb vti: I’m taking people at their word. They email me and say they’re done, I trust ‘em
10:13 vti neilb: oh, didn't know about that
10:13 mvuets public demands the rating system with number of pr's, commits, files and lines changed (=
10:13 Su-Shee vti: yeah but that also gets the ego-less people who just quietly finished their assignment.
10:14 vti neilb: i did my 2 PRs then, but they are not accepted yet, i will wait until jan 31rd and email you
10:14 mvuets jokes aside, would be really interesting to gather stats to the end of the challenge
10:14 neilb vti: ok
10:14 Su-Shee vti: I flagged that as "I'm done" :) (same here)
10:17 vti Su-Shee: but what if neilb misses my email and doesn't flag me!!! am i out of the challenge? :(
10:17 jashank I haven't spent enough time nurturing my patches ;_;
10:17 neilb there will be stats, graphs and prizes at the end of the year!
10:17 Su-Shee vti: *lol* :)
10:18 Su-Shee it's awesome how everybody treats that project like homework at school and WILL THERE BE A TEST LATER? :)
10:19 mvuets challenges turns into a competition (-:
10:20 Su-Shee yes, that's how guys to it..
10:21 Su-Shee do
10:21 reneeb neilb: btw I would be happy if more than one of my modules is assigned a month
10:22 neilb reneeb: how many? 2 per month?
10:23 reneeb neilb: anything up to 5 ;-)
10:24 neilb reneeb++
10:25 reneeb monsieurp: If you have too much time, you can have a look at the modules you use and create PRs for those modules. Or a "group" of modules. I have created issues and PRs for about 12 Mojolicious plugins with the last week and that was fun!

10:30 reneeb neilb: How often do you check for dists with github repository? I've seen, that I have to do a new release for some of my modules to add the metadata...
10:30 neilb at least once a week, but at the moment more often than that
10:30 neilb if you do it, let me know :-)

18:42 * neilb goes to check
18:42 mvuets they've got 99 issues pending, many seems easy and reasonable to fix
18:42 mvuets someone should get a (tuit)

18:48 neilb planning on creating a leaderboard of most PRs done my people taking part, counting all PRs, not just on assigned dists
18:50 mvuets neilb: you could come up with some sort of kwalitee for PRs, to measure quality over quantity
18:50 thrig PR gaming in 3, 2,

23:24 dams so
23:25 dams I have a problem: I couldn't get in touch with MAKAMAKA, which is the maintainer of JSON, which I received for january
23:26 dams JSON already has PRs, tickets, and subjects to debates. I don't think it would add a lot of value to just do a PR and leave it. I4d rather engage discussion with the maintainer on the directions he wants the module to take
23:26 dams as there are quite a few questions to answer regarding JSON.
23:27 dams if anyone knows a way to get in touch with makamaka, or has anythoing to suggest to me, it would make me happy
23:27 dams thanks
23:28 haarg in most cases the recommendation is "use JSON::MaybeXS instead"
23:28 ether it would still be nice if JSON.pm could have some of its issues fixed
23:29 ether I'd contact ISHIGAKI or MIYAGAWA and ask if they can assist with finding makamaka - they're both in touch with the locals
23:29 ether (and are also much more reachable)
23:29 haarg last time i tried to get ahold of makamaka it took a few months, but he did eventually merge my pr
23:33 neilb dams: I emailed a few Japanese perl hackers, to see if anyone knows anyone who knows … MAKAMAKA, and see if we can help nudge things along
23:36 sawyer ishigaki is probably more in touch, since he's still there
23:36 sawyer and better timezone
23:37 sawyer i should learn to say ishigaki-san instead
23:37 sawyer :)
23:42 dams ether: I tried miyagawa, I'll retry, thanks
23:42 rjbs joined #pr-challenge
23:42 dams haarg: it's exactly the JSON::MaybeXS issue that I4d like to get to the bottom of
23:43 dams neilb: thanks
23:43 haarg the basics are that MaybeXS makes better choices for what back end to use
23:43 haarg it also provides an alternate interface that i would say is more sane
23:47 wreis joined #pr-challenge
23:50 dams haarg: I know. However, to me, JSON::MaybeXS is useful only if it's called JSON and part of the core.
23:50 dams which is equivalent to bending JSON so that it looks more like JSON::MaybeXS
23:50 haarg why?
23:51 haarg if you mean core perl, that's unlikely to happen.
23:53 dams yes, that part is more me dreaming than anything that's going to happen :)
23:53 dams but, so, I may be completely wrong, but people are so used to do "use JSON" that only a small percentage will ever use MaybeXS
23:54 dams and MaybeXS brings a lot of added value to the people that are currently probably never going to use it
23:54 dams because they'll never stumble upon it
23:54 dams ( not sure if you see what I mean )
23:55 dams basically, I'd like MaybeXS to have more visibility, and having JSON act as MaybeXS is a good shortcut
23:56 Su-Shee I'm totally guilty of not even thinking and just typing use JSON;
23:57 haarg on a related note, JSON::PP could kind of use a rewrite
23:58 Su-Shee haarg: if we'd start listing everything which could "kind of use" a rewrite.. challenges until.. 2020? ;)
23:58 haarg yeah
23:59 jrhunt what happens to assigned dists at the end of the month?
