13:34 [Sno] neilb: I receive a few requests regarding AnyData/DBD::AnyData - this is (unfortunately) 6 weeks to late
13:34 neilb ?
13:35 [Sno] we (Tux+me) decide to skip the ancient stuff and rewrite from scratch and when finished, we will depreciate the modules
13:46 reneeb [Sno]: Then add something to the README or CONTRIBUTING file.
13:47 [Sno] reneeb: I will do one release to depreciate when AnyData2 is ready
13:47 reneeb I was very close to work on an AnyData issue myself last week, so it would be great if one can get those info beforehand ;-)
13:47 reneeb But it could take a while until it is ready?
13:47 [Sno] after 8 years no one f*** cares, people jump around and need AnyData patches?
13:48 [Sno] fo ril?
13:49 reneeb But a short note in a doc isn't that time consuming, is it?
13:49 [Sno] it is - making a dist costs half a day overall
13:50 reneeb You do not need to make a dist. Add a CONTRIBUTING file to the repo that says "please do not work on this code. we will rewrite it from scratch, so please come back in a few weeks or wait for AnyData2 on CPAN"
13:50 [Sno] people don't find the repo (they look in my github folder, at perl5-dbi and to svendoweit)
13:51 pink_mist isn't your github folder where they'd find the repo?
13:52 [Sno] pink_mist: no, that's more an experimental branch where I started trying if resurrecting will do ;)
13:52 [Sno] the master repo is (as usual) at perl5-dbi
13:52 Peter Then put a contributing file in all the repos?
13:52 pink_mist well, I expect the github repo would be a fine place to add a CONTRIBUTING file, so why not add it there?
13:53 [Sno] Peter: impossible
13:53 [Sno] there is no "_the_ github repository"
13:53 [Sno] I said what I wanted to say regarding pr-challenge and AnyData
13:54 [Sno] don't try to make me extra work where I have no time for, sorry
13:54 [Sno] left #pr-challenge
13:55 pink_mist may I suggest the people who got those dists to add a PR with a CONTRIBUTING file? :P
13:55 jkg grepping the assignment list, only AnyData was assigned
13:56 Peter I doubt he will merge, after all "it isn't on github" ;)
13:56 pink_mist ... this makes me realise I should add CONTRIBUTING files to my own dists :P
13:56 jkg the github metadata points to a github repo for Data-Foswiki, which is un-promising.
13:56 Peter Same, and public TODO lists
13:57 jkg https://metacpan.org/source/SDOWIDEIT/AnyData-0.11/META.yml#L26 # specifically this
13:58 Peter What were they on about then...
13:59 jkg I think they were asking for their dist to be excluded from the challenge.
13:59 reneeb Yes, AnyData should be excluded from the challenge.
14:01 reneeb But the problem is still present then ;) I created http://mojo.perl-services.de and I noticed a problem with Mojolicious::Plugin::AnyData (because of a problem in AnyData). That's why I wanted to work on the AnyData issue. It had nothing to do with this challenge.
14:01 reneeb That's why I said that he/they should add a CONTRIBUTING file...
14:02 Peter If they aren't much interested in the module, maybe someone could adopt it?
14:02 jkg yes, it sounds like forking or adoption are your options at this point (or waiting for AnyData2, I suppose)
14:03 reneeb They (will) work on AnyData2, so there's no point in adopting the module...
14:04 jkg depends how backcompatible 2 is, I suppose
14:04 * jkg doesn't really know the dist in question
14:04 shorty_mu Hi all, what to do with my PR module that references("my" module provides an interface to the mentioned problematic modules):
14:04 shorty_mu A.  a module which doesn't exist on CPAN (only on Github)
14:04 shorty_mu B. a module which doesn't build?
14:04 shorty_mu I was thinking of adding appropriate notes in README.md and the POD. Would that be ok?
14:05 shorty_mu Ups, sry. Was thinking Jabber, not IRC.
14:08 reneeb shorty_mu: It doesn't exist on CPAN?? I thought neilb included only modules that are on CPAN.
14:08 jkg reneeb: the one not on CPAN is a dep of the one assigned.
14:08 btyler joined #pr-challenge
14:08 reneeb shorty_mu: But any pull request should be ok.
14:08 reneeb jkg: oh, ok...
14:08 shorty_mu jkg: Thanks, for clarifying  ;)
14:08 jkg I had to read it a few times to get that as well ;)
14:10 shorty_mu *gnargs* Being no native english speaker and thinking in parallel of Git workflows might produce such things... Sry about it ;)
14:11 jkg heh, no worries :-)

15:26 ambs not yet.
15:26 nawglan grr.
15:28 ambs :-)
15:33 fredericop working on my assignment, I need the http://search.cpan.org/~rclamp/Module-Depends-0.16/
15:33 fredericop but on cpan page, there is a red CAPS message ** UNAUTHORIZED RELEASE **
15:33 fredericop never saw that on a module
15:34 ambs means that who released it did not have permission in CPAN to release it
15:34 ambs doesn’t mean it is a bad release.
15:34 fredericop mm, ok
15:35 ambs — it can be, but by richard clamp, I do not think so.

19:46 neilb We’re now 1/3rd complete for January: 33.4% \o/

19:51 Su-Shee :)
20:02 choroba What's this global shouting?
20:10 PerlJam 360-ish participants with 120-ish completing it.  That sounds like a win to me!  neilb++
20:10 neilb so far!
20:15 neilb there have been a few drop-outs, and twenty-something skips, so there are 326 assignments for january at the moment.
20:15 neilb There are 2 people waiting to join in in February
20:16 Ptolemarch joined #pr-challenge
20:18 PerlJam waiting to join?  Give them their assignment now!  ;)
20:29 ether heh
20:46 ambs in fact, it could be done: if joining at the end of a month, give an extra week to complete. But of course, this is just more work for neilb.
20:48 PerlJam All he has to do is setup and automated system that sends out assignments when people join  :)
20:49 PerlJam And then he can make it so that people can sign up to get new assignments as soon as they've completed one and not have to wait until the end of the month.
20:50 ambs the question is, if this is a challenge, we need to know who complete “in time”, and for someone that joins in the last day, it can get complicated to complete in that same month. Specially if they get “perl” as the dist.
20:51 Ptolemarch joined #pr-challenge
20:53 choroba is "perl" on the list, too?
20:53 ether heh
20:54 neilb perl doesn’t have a metadata file with a github repo, so no, it’s not a candidate :-)
20:57 ambs damn!
20:57 mvuets Hm, so 1/3rd made it to get their PR merged so far, not bad!
20:57 PerlJam mvuets: note that the challenge was to submit a PR, not get it merged :)
20:57 mvuets Ah, really? Good to know. But upsetting )-:
20:58 mvuets And I just made it to write up my "newly assigned" dist, that I should have done about a month ago (o:
20:59 mvuets Spent too much time ranting about SOAP, but hope someone finds it useful.
20:59 Su-Shee it's going to be interesting to see how many actually got merged/authors responded
21:00 ether I've decided to create a TODO file in my repository roots, but exclude that from being packaged in the cpan distribution
21:00 ether that way there might be something in there for a PR challenger to look at
21:02 Su-Shee ether: nice idea. I would totally take it as a real "just fucking clean that up, will you?" list :)
21:02 Su-Shee ether: don't forget tedious, time-consuming stuff which might not be difficult.
21:02 ether currently my system is to leave a note in Makefile.PL or dist.ini, uncommitted, so I'll see it when I come back to that dist
21:02 ether like "investigate this cpantesters failure: <link>"
21:03 ether but that isn't visible to anyone else
21:03 Su-Shee TODO file couldn't be simpler, really.
21:03 thrig I usually have a TODO file, but it's not version tracked
21:10 neilb ether: why not include it in the CPAN dist. Then MetaCPAN can see it, and let people know that the dist has a todo list. eg http://neilb.org/2014/12/13/todo-convention-for-cpan.html which started as https://github.com/CPAN-API/metacpan-web/issues/1426
21:13 ether I don't like including lots of development-oriented things in the shipped dist
21:17 neilb ether: what, like source code? ;-)
21:19 ambs neilb 1 - 0 ether
21:22 * neilb is doing his tax return, so feeling snarky: HMRC 1 - 0 NEILB
21:35 * Su-Shee is giving everyone a german tax form, after that you'll love your country. ;)
21:36 choroba you sure?
21:36 choroba do they also completely change it every year?
21:41 Su-Shee choroba: let me just say: almost everybody has an account. regular people like me have one. because nobody wants to deal with this.
21:44 pink_mist *accountant ?
21:46 Su-Shee aeh yes.
21:46 Su-Shee long painful day :)
