12:37 G_SabinoMullane How can one declare a Module::Install extension dependency in the Makefile.PL? My assigned module uses Module::Install::ReadmeFromPod,
12:38 G_SabinoMullane but I would like a better error message than: String found where operator expected at Makefile.PL line 4, near "readme_from 'lib/Convert/PEM.pm'"
12:38 G_SabinoMullane Ideally would point the user to the missing module!
12:43 haarg Module::Install will magic it to work for people installing the module
12:44 haarg but the general solution for that is to manually "use Module::Install::Whatever;" in the Makefile.PL, which will give a much more understandable error message
12:44 kid51 joined #pr-challenge
12:45 G_SabinoMullane Thanks. That seems to be the only way. I could not get such magic to invoke.
12:48 haarg what i mean by people installing is that Module::Install will package the extension along with the rest of the dist when a tarball is generated
12:48 haarg but it's rather too much magic
12:50 G_SabinoMullane Ah ok. I've not played with Module::Install much (ExtUtils::MakeMaker expert tho :)
12:53 haarg Module::Install is primarily an extensive layer of magic over EUMM
12:53 haarg useful, but in my opinion far too much magic
13:00 G_SabinoMullane Ugh, now I need Module::Install::TestBase which isn't even in packaging systems. All this work to get the Makefile to run! ;)
13:06 haarg you'll find that on the author side, things rely much more on installing from cpan rather than using os packages
13:30 G_SabinoMullane Yeah. It's just annoying. :)
13:32 G_SabinoMullane ...how random the module availability is for Debian
14:01 jkg G_SabinoMullane: mostly, modules packaged for debian are there to support applications packaged for debian, rather than for their own sake
14:01 jkg so yeah it ends up as a bit of a random cross-section of CPAN :)
14:07 alh joined #pr-challenge
14:17 G_SabinoMullane It worked out okay: only 2 of 8 required modules had to be installed via CPAN
14:18 ribasushi <jkg> G_SabinoMullane: mostly, modules packaged for debian are there to support applications packaged for debian, rather than for their own sake
14:19 ribasushi ^^ this is not true
14:21 * G_SabinoMullane fires up perlbrew to double check dependencies
14:28 jkg ribasushi: oh?
14:30 ribasushi jkg: there is a tight knit team dedicated to put out anything that anyone requests, including the full dependency chain
14:31 ribasushi jkg: can be found on OFTC#debian-perl
14:31 jkg ribasushi: I was aware of the team, but still thought most of the inclusions were to support other packages; I stand corrected :-)

17:37 neilb February stats right now: 88/206 complete = 42.7%
17:39 * choroba tried to cajole some former colleagues and comongers to join.
17:39 ether really? http://rawgit.com/CPAN-PRC/resources/master/february.html only shows 5 ticks
17:39 * ether was getting worried
17:39 ptc neilb: what were the stats for January?
17:40 neilb 163/268 complete = 60.8%
17:40 ptc ah, ok, quite good
17:40 neilb there are some people still working on January, so the stats are still slowly changing there too
17:45 upasana_ neilb: I forgot to send email, I am sending now, will that be considered?
17:45 neilb ooh well, I’ll have to think about that …
17:47 upasana_ but that PR needs some changes, which I will make today or in the upcoming days!
17:47 upasana_ neilb: sent!
17:47 upasana_ and it's 28th Feb even in UK timezone, so you will consider it!
17:49 neilb feisty!
17:54 bentglasstube haha, I thought we had until tomorrow at 08:00 UTC or something
18:07 ether there are six hours left in February
18:07 neilb yeah, you do
18:07 ether I'm barely awake on Saturday morning and I still know that :)
18:07 bentglasstube there are thirteen hours left here
18:07 ether I'm used to 4pm (or 5pm in summer) being a natural end-of-day marker
18:08 ether bentglasstube: UTC is all that matters
18:08 bentglasstube haha fair enough
18:08 ether it's 10am for me and there are still 6 hours left in February.
18:08 bentglasstube at least I don't have any of that gross summer/winter time though
18:08 neilb :-)
18:09 ether it was weird being in Lyon last year and in the afternoon on Saturday I thought "oh! gotta get my weekly release in" and then I realized that I still had many hours still to go! *that* felt weird
18:09 ether the end of the week being in the middle of the night? preposterous!
18:12 choroba I was once responsible for a contest. Most answers started coming few minutes before the deadline.

20:16 kyzn Good evening, everyone. I was looking for some piece of advice, if anyone has time to help I'd appreciate that very much
20:18 kyzn Only a few hours left for February assignment, I was assigned Dancer-Plugin-Auth-Basic, and I have no idea how can I contribute. I checked testers (only 1 fail for Perl 5.19), 1 cpants warning (which says there is no readme file, but there actually is a readme.pod file), 1 rt.cpan ticket (which was for an older version), and no github issues
20:19 kyzn If you want to take a look, here's the github link: https://github.com/odyniec/p5-Dancer-Plugin-Auth-Basic
20:20 kyzn I'd be pretty happy if you could share a few words :)
20:28 ether kyzn: have you checked on the #dancer channel?
20:30 kyzn actually no, I will try to ask there, thanks!
20:31 ether one thing I see is that it looks like the README.pod is going to get included in the upload in subsequent releases, which is a bad thing - that file would get installed as lib/Dancer/Plugin/Auth/README.pod
20:32 ether not 100% sure though - it looks like the author's dzil plugin bundle has changed since the last time this dist was released
20:32 ether you could add a simple README however, by adding [Readme] to dist.ini
20:32 ether which would fix the cpants warning
20:34 ether the test coverage could possibly be improved?
20:34 ether or the documentation?
20:35 kyzn readme can be added to dist.ini with ease, that was a nice idea! i can also add to documentation/tests as you said
20:35 sivoais joined #pr-challenge
20:35 kyzn thanks a lot for your response, i actually never used dist::zilla
20:36 kyzn so i'm now looking at how it works, probably i'll commit something into dist.ini for this month, we'll see
20:36 kyzn thanks again!
