19:54 mgagne bodepd: I don't see why Puppet should recompress CSS and JS after an update. The package should already contains the appropriate files to work out of the box.

19:58 bodepd I don't know. I remember they were issues in folsom, but I thought they were fixed.
19:58 bodepd maybe not?
19:58 mgagne I don't have any issue with Ubuntu
19:58 mgagne furthermore, manage.py compress is broken
19:59 mgagne and will break your install
20:01 bodepd please point that out in the patch :)

20:36 done__ hi bodepd and mgagne!  thanks for the assistance getting up and running
20:37 mgagne done__: Hi!
20:38 done__ mgagne: so it looks like the use of the puppet-openstack respository for development is now deprecated... and instead, I should be using the puppet-openstack_dev_env repository. is this correct?
20:38 done__ this could explain why I found so many broken things
20:38 mgagne bodepd should be able to answer your question as he is the one using openstack_dev_env the most.
20:39 mgagne puppet-openstack needs a lot of care those days, people are working to fix it as you can see in the reviews and previous commits.
20:42 done__ mgagne: I have a bunch of changes to stackforge/puppet-openstack that I had to make in order to get basic services to start up. should I continue on the path of submitting patches for stackforge/puppet-openstack?
20:44 done__ mgagne: since I'm the new guy here, I'm looking for guidance :-)
20:45 mgagne done__: To be honest, I do not personally use puppet-openstack. However some people are working to improve it. Any changes will be considered. The biggest one in the pipe being this one: https://review.openstack.org/#/c/32389/
20:46 mgagne If you think there are bugs or problems that need to be addressed, go ahead: open a bug, propose a fix or ask how it can be addressed on IRC.
20:47 done__ mgagne: c/32389 looks familiar... I had to add a bunch of additional credentials to the top level classes
20:47 mgagne it's more or less "scratch your own itch" ;)
20:50 done__ mgagne: gotya... cool
20:50 mgagne done__: Maybe you can give this patch a try and see if it fixes your issues.
20:50 mgagne done__: You can add comments to the review too if you feel it needs improvement.
20:51 done__ mgagne: I'm currently attempting to avoid the use of all.pp and see if I can get the controller and compute classes to run on the same server. all.pp seems a bit redundant
20:52 mgagne done__: I can't say you are wrong. I too feel there is room for improvement in that aspect. bodepd is trying to figure out a better way to do it.

21:04 bodepd done__: I would start with the dev_env. It has the most complete exmampels.
21:04 bodepd done__: and the controller and compute examples there are what I use for integration testing (so they should always work)
21:05 bodepd done__: the quantum stuff there is not update to date unfortunately
21:06 bodepd done__: I am going to get it working when I can find time
21:06 bodepd done__: but the openstack::quantum class is working, but I've mainly been helping integration it with Cisco's top-level manifests atm
21:07 bodepd done__: so, I would start there, and see of the openstack module works for you, and make a decision if its worth patching it, or figure out if you suits you better to use it as an example
21:08 bodepd done__: TBH, most people having chosen to use the openstack module as an example (as mgagne mentioned), and
21:08 bodepd compose their own version.
21:08 mgagne ^
21:08 bodepd done__: I see this as one of the main limitations of the project, and hope to have higher level compositoion stuff that everyone can use
21:09 done__ bodepd: gotya. makes sense. so the higher level composition stuff is being worked on in the dev_env repository?
21:09 bodepd done__: the dev_env holds the Puppetfile that defines what to install
21:09 mgagne done__: in bodepd's head :P
21:09 bodepd done__: and has integrated vagrant stuff with examples
21:10 bodepd done__: oh, yeah, the future stuff is still in my head, in a few omnigraffle diagrams :)
21:10 bodepd done__: honestly, I should clean up some of the dev_env stuff. It's kind of become my own little project, so feedback would be greatly appreciated
21:11 done__ bodepd: I'll take it for a spin
21:11 bodepd done__: I mainly use it to run integration tests (if you even see the comment: 'run_puppet_ci'), that is the dev_env
21:11 bodepd I shoudl really clean up all of the bits of it.
21:11 bodepd ignore the rake task :(
21:12 bodepd and focus on he openstack_controller and compute roles
21:12 bodepd it got way to big for me to maintain all of the things in there, so some of it is just cruft :(
21:16 done__ no worries :-)   Thanks guys for doing all this work! great stuff!!!
21:17 bodepd done__: hey, I'm about to push a patch up to dev_env to clean it up and update the docs
