07:18 bauzas morning all
07:21 bauzas I have an issue when deploying Openstack using Puppet and Foreman
07:22 bauzas I'm using the Puppet trunk
07:23 bauzas using librarian-puppet which fetches Puppet manifests from trunk
07:24 bauzas at runtime, it fails because of packages missing
07:24 bauzas LevelResourcemessage
07:24 bauzas err/Stage[main]/Cinder::Api/Package[cinder-api]/ensurechange from purged to present failed: Execution of '/usr/bin/apt-get -q -y -o DPkg::Options::=--force-confold install cinder-api' returned 100: Reading package lists... 07:26 bauzas the OS is Ubuntu 12.04.3
07:26 xingchao bauzas: Have you configure the right apt repo ?
07:26 bauzas hi xingchao
07:27 bauzas xingchao: I was thinking the Puppet manifests from trunk were pulling latest source from git
07:27 bauzas xingchao: I mean, for Cinder, latest Cinder APi from trunk
07:27 bauzas I can understand the below code :
07:27 bauzas if $::cinder::params::api_package {
07:27 bauzas Package['cinder-api'] -> Cinder_config<||>
07:27 bauzas Package['cinder-api'] -> Cinder_api_paste_ini<||>
07:27 bauzas Package['cinder-api'] -> Service['cinder-api']
07:27 bauzas package { 'cinder-api':
07:27 bauzas ensure  => $package_ensure,
07:27 bauzas name    => $::cinder::params::api_package,
07:27 bauzas }
07:27 bauzas }
07:28 bauzas but does that mean the Puppet-openstack trunk is referring to Grizzly packages ?
07:28 xingchao bauzas: I mean you should configure the right  openstack deb repo
07:28 bauzas even if I have a Puppetfile saying so
07:28 bauzas xingchao: could you please tell me the repo URL ?
07:29 bauzas xingchao: although I can't understand why I need to configure deb repos for Openstack sources...
07:31 xingchao bauzas:  edit your /etc/apt/sources.list and add one line :   deb http://ubuntu-cloud.archive.canonical.com/ubuntu precise-updates/havana main
07:32 bauzas xingchao: ok, but this repo doesn't contain the latest source code ?
07:32 xingchao bauzas: If you want use grizzly release, just replace 'havana'
07:32 bauzas I don't want to use Grizzly ;)
07:33 bauzas xingchao: actually, I'm looking on a way to get same capabities as devstack but with Puppet
07:33 xingchao bauzas: add this one for source code:  deb-src http://ubuntu-cloud.archive.canonical.com/ubuntu precise-updates/havana main
07:33 bauzas ie. pulling latest trunk from Cinder
07:33 bauzas is this repo having latest updates from recently merged Gerrit changes ?
07:35 fvollero Morning everyone :)
07:35 xingchao bauzas: I get your idea. I'm afraid not. But you can do this by yourself. Pull lateset code and pakcage it
07:36 bauzas xingchao: I got the point
07:36 fvollero EmilienM: o/
07:36 EmilienM fvollero: \o
07:36 xingchao fvollero: Good morning.  It's afternoon here :)
07:36 bauzas I don't know the UCA frequency of changes, any idea on the whole update process ?
07:37 bauzas I mean for Havana of course
07:37 fvollero xingchao: Ni hao :) lol
07:37 fvollero EmilienM: did you tested the latest puppet heat module?
07:38 EmilienM fvollero: not yet
07:38 fvollero EmilienM: I guess we've a small problem with require, but I am trying to understand why, and if is not just on me.
07:39 fvollero xingchao: Work hao ma?
07:39 xingchao bauzas: Wait for a moment, I will give you a wiki link.
07:40 bauzas xingchao: cool thanks
07:40 fvollero xingchao: that was wrong, i meant: Ni hao ma :)
07:40 xingchao fvollero: hen hao, xiexie :)
07:40 bauzas xingchao: I can take some time and write manifests for building from trunk, would you be interested in ?
07:40 fvollero \o/
07:41 bauzas xingchao: I just need pointers on how to build the packages accordingly
07:42 xingchao bauzas: Ref here https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ServerTeam/CloudArchive
07:46 bauzas xingchao: thanks, that doesn't help much tho :(
07:46 bauzas xingchao: I can't check when the latest build has been done
07:48 bauzas 1:2013.2~b2-0ubuntu3~cloud0 0
07:48 bauzas 500 http://ubuntu-cloud.archive.canonical.com/ubuntu/ precise-updates/havana/main amd64 Packages
07:48 xingchao bauzas: You can write a crontab script to pull latest code periodically and package it.
07:49 bauzas xingchao: I'm planning to perform a full baremetal install using Foreman, so it would be done on the Puppet side :)
07:50 bauzas xingchao: do you have any pointers for packaging trunk ?
07:50 bauzas I mean, where can I find the control files ?
07:50 bauzas for UCA ?
07:51 xingchao bauzas:  You can get it from the src deb
07:51 bauzas oh dear :)
07:51 bauzas you're right ;)
07:51 bauzas ok, will do
07:52 bauzas current Puppet manifests for Openstack are pulling from given UCA packages, assuming the operator provided the repos
07:52 fvollero EmilienM: For some reason i get Error: Could not find dependency Class[Heat::Db] for Service[heat-api-cloudwatch]
07:53 xingchao bauzas: If you use RPM, you can get the spec file from http://pkgs.fedoraproject.org/cgit/?q=openstack
07:53 xingchao bauzas: yes
07:55 bauzas xingchao: ok thanks, will work on it then
07:55 xingchao bauzas: :D
07:56 EmilienM fvollero: I'll ahve a look later
07:59 fvollero EmilienM: Amazing. I will send in any case the review, we cal always mark as abandoned :)
08:25 bauzas xingchao: you still there ?
08:25 bauzas there is still one thing unclear to me
08:26 bauzas aiui, there are 2 distincts ways for getting Puppet manifests
08:26 bauzas either by fetching the latest stable Puppet manifests
08:26 bauzas or by pulling them from trunk
08:26 bauzas (I'm referring to https://github.com/stackforge/puppet-openstack#setup)
08:27 xingchao bauzas:  I always pulling from trunk :)
08:27 bauzas ok
08:29 bauzas so, as the UCA repo is left to the operator to be filled in, I suppose that if I want to pull Grizzly, I have to both switch Puppet-openstack to stable Grizzly branch, and providing UCA Grizzly repo ?
08:30 bauzas aiui, that's just a matter of prividing both good Puppetfile and yaml files, nop ?
08:30 bauzas and leave the operator provide the right UCA path ?
08:31 xingchao bauzas: actually puppet-openstack contains a class named openstack::repo, it call configure repo for you.
08:32 bauzas oh ?
08:32 bauzas missed it
08:32 bauzas this class is not pulled by openstack::controller ?
08:32 bauzas called, I mean
08:33 xingchao bauzas: no, if you want to use, you need to call it by yourself in your manifest.
08:33 bauzas makes sense
08:35 bauzas the provided site.pp doesn't give that info :)
08:35 bauzas ok, i see I have to dig in
08:36 bauzas btw, this class is not mentioning havana :)
08:36 bauzas that would be perfect starting point for a first change :)
08:37 xingchao bauzas: yes, you can submit a patch for that :)
08:37 bauzas cool

11:39 fvollero EmilienM: The heat registration to keystone have to be done by hand in puppet-heat or there's some sorcery I don't see in the module ?
11:42 EmilienM fvollero: should be automatic but not sure I implemented it in heat module
11:43 fvollero EmilienM: Great. Another thing to add to my todo list
11:43 EmilienM fvollero: thanks for your help on this module
11:46 fvollero EmilienM: de rien
12:10 openstackgerrit François Charlier proposed a change to stackforge/puppet-keystone: Enable serving keystone from apache mod_wsgi  https://review.openstack.org/29059
12:28 bauzas hey team
12:29 bauzas I built the Puppet modules from trunk, applied it to Havana by merging https://review.openstack.org/45195 and tried to install a Controller node using openstack::controller
12:29 bauzas atm, I'm facing a packaging issue which is weird :
12:30 bauzas err: /Stage[main]/Nova::Vncproxy/Nova::Generic_service[vncproxy]/Package[nova-vncproxy]/ensure: change from purged to present failed: Execution of '/usr/bin/apt-get -q -y -o DPkg::Options::=--force-confold install novnc nova-novncproxy' returned 100: Reading package lists...
12:30 bauzas Building dependency tree...
12:30 bauzas Reading state information...
12:30 bauzas Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have
12:30 bauzas requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable
12:30 bauzas distribution that some required packages have not yet been created
12:30 bauzas or been moved out of Incoming.
12:30 bauzas The following information may help to resolve the situation:
12:30 bauzas The following packages have unmet dependencies:
12:30 bauzas novnc : Depends: libjs-swfobject but it is not installable
12:30 bauzas E: Unable to correct problems, you have held broken packages.
12:30 bauzas does anyone had the issue before ?
12:31 bauzas the libjs-swfobject doesn't exist in any repos I have
12:32 fvollero .wu b52
12:34 bauzas ok, I found the bug which is not spotted, afaik https://ask.openstack.org/en/question/3303/libjs-swfobject-and-novnc/
12:34 bauzas I'll log a bug to puppet-nova LP, and assign it to me

15:17 bauzas hi team
15:18 bauzas re: bug 1221273, I just would like to know what would be the preferred way for fixing it
15:18 bauzas https://bugs.launchpad.net/puppet-openstack/+bug/1221273
15:19 bauzas shall I provide the deb file by hand, or push a new repo ?
15:19 bauzas I'll patch openstack::repo fox fixing it
15:21 bauzas my question is : shall I provide the deb file in the files/ section, or wget thru a Puppet method, or add the Debian repo ?
15:23 mgagne bauzas: the issue will be fixed in the next repository update: http://reqorts.qa.ubuntu.com/reports/ubuntu-server/cloud-archive/havana_versions.html
15:26 bauzas ok cool, any idea when it will be done ?
15:26 mgagne bauzas: unfortunately not. We do not maintain the repository
15:27 bauzas ok, do you prefer a temporary patch on the Novnc class, or leave as open bug ?
15:27 mgagne bauzas: I'm responding to your bug report
15:27 bauzas ok, waiting your comment then :)
15:28 bauzas as I'm performing a full baremetal install, I need to write my own manifest anyway
15:28 mgagne bauzas: the idea is we want to avoid "patch" in our modules if it can be handled upstream
15:28 bauzas ok, if so, I have to write my own module patching it :)
15:28 mgagne bauzas: you don't need a whole module if you already have one for your infra
15:29 bauzas I'm using Foreman, as UNC
15:30 mgagne bauzas: sorry, I'm geared as you are in that matter. still using site.pp =)
15:30 bauzas there is no site.pp in my life :)
15:30 bauzas I then have to declare new classes
15:30 bauzas and call them on the nodes
15:31 mgagne bodepd: that guy has no site.pp!
15:31 bauzas :)
15:32 bauzas thanks for the comment
15:32 bauzas I'll choose to use staging
15:32 bauzas that's a matter of velocity :)
15:36 bauzas well, there is actually an 'ubuntu' repo
15:42 mgagne 'ubuntu' is the version of Ubuntu with Havana.
15:44 bauzas so 13.10 ?
15:45 bauzas ok got it
15:45 bauzas staging is the fresher one
15:45 bauzas ok, will propose then a patch for exporting the repo choice
15:45 mgagne bauzas: saucy
15:45 bauzas as a variable
15:53 openstackgerrit Sylvain Bauza proposed a change to stackforge/puppet-openstack: Add possibility to change UCA repository  https://review.openstack.org/45257
15:53 mgagne bauzas: this is what I use to manage apt configuration: http://paste.openstack.org/show/45813/
16:00 xingchao bauzas:  how things going on?
16:01 bauzas xingchao: things are going well :)
16:01 bauzas I'm on my way to deliver a full Puppet controller
16:01 xingchao bauzas: cool :)
16:02 bauzas I'll yet have to write my own manifests for making capabilities of pulling trunk
16:02 ari_ joined #puppet-openstack
16:02 xingchao bauzas: You just need to set package  ensure => latest
16:03 bauzas nah, I'm not yet there :)
16:03 bauzas and the install has to be done from scratch
16:03 bauzas as I'll provision BM hosts
16:04 bauzas so, the process of extracting the deb-src's, pulling the trunk, rebuild the packages and provide them thru a local repo has yet to be written with Puppet :)
16:06 xingchao bauzas:  foreman works well with puppet :)
16:09 openstackgerrit Sylvain Bauza proposed a change to stackforge/puppet-openstack: Add possibility to change UCA repository  https://review.openstack.org/45257
16:09 openstackgerrit Xingchao Yu proposed a change to stackforge/puppet-nova: Add nova::libvirt::volume  https://review.openstack.org/45262
16:10 mgagne xingchao: Using latest could have side effects. Services are restarted when packages are updated. This has the potential to interrupt/corrupt ongoing requests.
16:10 mgagne xingchao: unless you have a test setup and which to test against trunk as much as possible.
16:11 openstackgerrit A change was merged to stackforge/puppet-ceilometer: Inline a custom file_line provider to fix agent.  https://review.openstack.org/44324
16:11 xingchao mgagne: That's the case for bauzas. He want to use trunk packages from his own deb repo.
16:12 mgagne xingchao: right. I should do it myself so I can test myself against trunk :D
16:12 bauzas xingchao: yep, I do confirm, Foreman works like a charm
16:13 bauzas it's just bad it can't manage IPMI
16:13 bauzas :)
16:13 xingchao mgagne: I do openstack RPM packaging daily for test the latest feature :)
16:14 mgagne xingchao: as much as I like RedHat, we do not use RedHat in our environment =)
16:14 xingchao bauzas: Try Foreman 1.3, it will give you a surprise for IPMI :)
16:14 mgagne xingchao: I do have a setup to build patched Debian (Ubuntu) packages
16:14 mgagne xingchao: just have to tweak it to build against master
16:14 bauzas xingchao: mgagne: let's discuss tomorrow the design of pulling trunk in Puppet manifests, I would definitely be interested in writing it on my own :)
16:15 mgagne bauzas: my first response would be: won't be possible unless we have support from upstream (ubuntu, redhat, debian)
16:15 bauzas nope, no need :)
16:15 mgagne bauzas: they are already building from trunk, just have to find the repo =)
16:15 bauzas you can provide your own repo :)
16:16 bauzas that's what I'm planning to do
16:16 mgagne bauzas: true, I'm already using my own repo ;)
16:16 bauzas all that stuff just needs to be puppetised ;)
16:17 bauzas check this out : http://mancoosi.org/~abate/configuring-local-apt-repository-puppet
16:17 mgagne bauzas: I have a similar setup =)
16:17 bauzas cool
16:18 bauzas nice to hear that :)
16:18 mgagne bauzas: I'm kind of proud of it tbh =)
16:18 bauzas :)
16:18 bauzas ok, then, I'll create a few more classes in the openstack manifest
16:19 bauzas this should not be so tricky
16:20 bauzas I can't write a BP, we are FeatureFreeze by now :D
16:21 bauzas ok, leaving now
16:21 bauzas see you tomorrow
16:27 xingchao mgagne:  This patch has been merged: https://review.openstack.org/#/c/44324/ .  But related patch for puppetlabs-stdlib has not been merged.  puppet-ceilometer will break for now.
16:27 mgagne xingchao: fun...

20:27 fvollero bodepd: mgagne : A quick question, we follow the normal freeze lifecycle for our puppet modules?
20:33 mgagne fvollero: we are very lax on this aspect.
20:34 fvollero mgagne: lax == los angeles exchange? :)
20:34 fvollero or is the shortcut for relaxed
20:34 mgagne fvollero: lacking in rigor =)
20:34 fvollero mgagne: ok :)
20:35 fvollero mgagne: that make sense :) Since you're so nice to reply (i got the right TZ intersection)
20:35 mgagne =)
20:35 fvollero mgagne: what about puppet-ceilometer?
20:35 fvollero mgagne: it will break for long time?
20:36 mgagne fvollero: is it badly broken?
20:36 mgagne fvollero: is it related to the patch that got merged today?
20:36 fvollero mgagne: I hope not. I didn't tested it yet, but when I read the comment and I jumped on the chair.
20:37 mgagne fvollero: =)
20:37 fvollero mgagne: yep, because until this morning, I was happy that I had the job done...
20:37 mgagne fvollero: also, I'm not sure who is supposed to publish it in fact
20:37 bodepd fvollero: I think we should not feature freeze for a while
20:37 bodepd fvollero: in the last release, we stopped features months after release
20:37 fvollero bodepd: Oh, that's cool. because i've an outstanding patch that i would like to send for puppet-heat
20:38 bodepd fvollero: for this next release, I would be happy if we can feature freese before the summit
20:38 bodepd I have a feeling that will be the best time. B/c in general, we will likely need to lag a but behind feature freeze for the releases
20:38 fvollero bodepd: mgagne : I am asking because i'm new here and I don't know how everything works atm :)
20:38 bodepd b/c it may take us a litlte time to implement the features implemented in fcore
20:38 bodepd fvollero: some of it, we make up as we go along
20:39 mgagne fvollero: we are still figuring out stuff ourselves
20:39 fvollero mgagne: bodepd : That's great. I'm a fast to learn :)
20:39 bodepd I have a feeling that we should feature freeze 1 month after release or at release, but not when the projects feature freeze
20:39 * fvollero also forget fast
20:40 bodepd sorry if I've been a litlte lax on code review.
20:40 bodepd I've been up to something...
20:40 fvollero bodepd: I would vote for 1month after release.
20:40 mgagne bodepd: I wish to be able to publish a pre-release version but don't know exactly how to do it with forge =)
20:40 fvollero bodepd: so we can really have the time to fix moving parts or get used to it and slowly moving at release
20:40 bodepd mgagne: with rc tags
20:41 bodepd fvollero: I'll post something to the list
20:41 bodepd mgagne: but I have no idea if the forge really supports rc tags
20:41 mgagne bodepd: I would be happy with a dev channel on forge so we can publish stuff without fearing we broke someone's setup.
20:41 mgagne bodepd: forge supports, not librarian-puppet
20:42 morazi that's an interesting problem really.  is a freeze really frozen until the puppet stuff is done or is it considered distinct enough that it is more of an adjunct thing
20:43 bodepd morazi: for now, I see it as being adjacent with the goal of moving to be as close to core over time
