00:26 bodepd dachary: just hava a class called: caph::conf that accepts a hash
00:26 bodepd and use it to serialize in the ini resources
00:26 dachary and pass it to ceph_config
00:27 bodepd yeah. that is what I would do.
00:27 bodepd I was thining about this for openstack
00:27 dachary bodepd: thanks for the advice, that will save us from crazy ;-)
00:27 bodepd that we should possibly decouple the config from the interfaces
00:27 bodepd but it requires something like data_mappings for it to really work
00:28 dachary yes
00:28 bodepd It looks like it was a good thing for everyone that I dissappeared for a while
00:28 bodepd things look like they are marching on :)
00:28 * bodepd is not back yet. Just checking emails after breakfast.
00:29 dachary :-) your presence is not the reason for me being idle, if that makes you feel better.
00:29 bodepd nah. I've just been worried that everything depends too much on me

00:37 hogepodge The rc is so I can post them to the forge and test their dependencies.
00:37 michchap aha. Thanks.
00:37 hogepodge It also gives the community a chance to say they want new features added or find silly bugs in my Modulefiles (there's always one)
00:38 hogepodge no problem.

15:19 dmsimard dachary, dalgaaf_, xarses, we need to talk. :)
15:20 * dachary listens
15:20 dachary dmsimard: I explored in depth the bootstrap process of the mons today, now trying to get it together in an elegant and flexible way.
15:21 dalgaaf_ ok
15:22 dmsimard How do we allow users to configure ceph ? There's ceph_config that can set anything and everything. There are various namespaces, [global], [osd], [mon], [mds], and even lower levels like [mon.01] .. etc. My understanding is that most parameters can be set in global. If they are set lower in the hierarchy, they take precedence.
15:23 dachary I would say let the user do whatever makes sense to her/him. Only enforce a logic when it is required to properly deploy.
15:23 mjblack joined #puppet-openstack
15:23 dachary for instance in the case of the mons
15:24 dmsimard I was thinking we could do something like ceph::conf::mon, ceph::conf::osd, ceph::conf::mds, (rgw too?) which would have each their relevant parameters (probably undef) but also an additional parameter: scope
15:24 dalgaaf_ I would at least stick to what is documented in the ceph docu
15:24 dachary just leave mon-data out of the scope of the module, there is no need for it to know anything about it
15:25 mjblack joined #puppet-openstack
15:25 dachary dmsimard: define relevant
15:25 dalgaaf_ you may need to create the correct dir
15:25 dalgaaf_ for the mon
15:26 dachary yes, that's right
15:26 dmsimard This would allow something like class { 'ceph::conf::osd': scope => 'global', 'osd_pool_default_pg_num' => '100' } and { 'ceph::conf::osd': scope => 'osd', 'osd_mkfs_type' => 'xfs' }
15:26 dachary maybe another example that has absolutely no possible impact : debug level of the mon ;-)
15:27 dachary dalgaaf_: I thing you will agree that the puppet module has no interest in dealing with it whatsoever
15:27 dachary [mon]
15:27 dachary debug mon = 10
15:27 dachary debug ms = 1
15:29 dachary dmsimard: why not just have ceph::conf::mon transparently pass to ceph_config section mon what it does not know about ?
15:31 dmsimard So it would expect an array ?
15:31 dachary dmsimard: yesterday night bodepd suggested a hash
15:31 dachary I think osd_mkfs_type is another example of parameter that the puppet module could ignore completely. I don't see what it would need to do with it. It will have a side effect on ceph-disk but I don't think puppet will need to adapt in any meaningfull way.
15:32 dachary dmsimard: apparently there is a way to feed ini_settings with the content of a hash
15:32 dachary I did not investigate though
15:32 dmsimard dachary: You were saying yesterday that we would need all the configuration variables as parameters :)
15:33 dachary yes, and I said we would go crazy because there are so many
15:33 dmsimard I didn't say it, but I thought it :P
15:33 dachary instead of wrapping all of them, bodepd suggested to transparently pass them thru to ceph_config
15:34 dmsimard Oh, I guess I was already gone when that was said
15:34 dachary yes
15:34 dmsimard But then, how does a user configure ceph ?
15:34 dmsimard Solely through "personal" puppetmaster recipes ?
15:35 dachary I don't follow
15:36 dachary if using scenario_node_terminus, it would be thru yaml mapping
15:36 dachary if calling ceph::conf from a manifest it would be by giving it arguments such as what you suggested above
15:37 dachary only ceph::conf would be ok with whatever you feed it, including crap, and push that in ceph_config
15:42 dalgaaf_ ?
15:42 dalgaaf_ I don't get it  ... how would that work?
15:43 dachary dalgaaf_: say we agree that mon/debug_mon is outside of the scope of puppet-ceph
15:43 mjblack_ joined #puppet-openstack
15:44 dachary class { 'ceph::conf': 'mon/debug_mon' => 10 } translates into ceph_config { 'mon/debug_mon' => 10 } which ends up in [mon] debug mon = 10 and all this without puppet-ceph knowing anything about 'debug mon' being a valid ceph configuration option
15:45 dachary I don't know how to code things so that it is transparent in this way but bodepd suggests that using a hash is the way to do it
15:46 dachary class { 'ceph::conf': 'transparent' => { 'mon/debug_mon' => 10 }} ?
15:46 dachary I have no clue
15:46 dachary but this point is : there is a need for puppet-ceph to be ignorant of a number of options ( hundreds I would say )
15:47 dachary dalgaaf_: does that make sense ?
15:48 dmsimard dachary: The first way isn't very useful, you would be better off just writing a ceph_config
15:48 dachary dmsimard: except ceph_config can't be fed with data mapping
15:48 dachary hence the need for a class wrapper
15:49 dalgaaf_ I'm not sure about that all ... have to think about it
15:49 dalgaaf_ and i don't know the implementation details for puppet
15:58 xarses dachary, dmsimard, dalgaaf_ : would it make sense to make the config lines a define then instead of a class
15:58 xarses use the title as the section/name
15:58 dachary whatever works with scenario_node_terminus is fine with me ;-)
15:59 xarses then they cant be repeated, can be added on the fly, and we can pre-stage common ones with classes
15:59 xarses you could also pass a list of them to the class or something, probably a hash too

17:42 tnoor1 hiera is defining only openstack::controller::fixed_range:

17:43 tnoor1 even resolv.conf is differet
17:43 tnoor1 it's using a fixed valuse of 8.8.4.4 for DNS1
17:43 EmilienM tnoor1: any dns somewhere ?
17:44 tnoor1 i ran find and exec to locate 8.8.4.4 but i don't see it anywhere

18:41 dmsimard You lost me, what do you mean ?
18:43 xarses i though there was some talk that if someone said, wanted to set 'mon_host' we'd put it in the proper place for them, with out knowing if it was globa/mon/etc..
18:46 dmsimard My opinion is that defaults should be left up to Ceph. We provide (and use) ceph_config to configure what is mandatory to get a cluster running (e.g, fsid). The user is ultimately able to configure anything and everything with ceph_config in manifests
18:46 dmsimard Whatever we configure as defaults to get the cluster up and running should be set as parameters so that they can be overridden
18:47 dmsimard Otherwise we must start supporting all the configuration possibilities of [scope] key => values
18:51 xarses I can get behind that, our goal is to get X running correctly
18:51 xarses we can always add more options into the main classes other users find they want support for them
