14:46 dmsimard fc__, hogepodge, EmilienM, looks like someone pinpointed exactly why my ceilometer permission problem happens: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ceilometer/+bug/1262264
14:46 dmsimard I knew I wasn't crazy
14:47 fc__ dmsimard: \o/
14:48 fc__ I thought it was something like this, but thought it would've been in the init script …
14:54 dmsimard fc__: This means we need to patch this in one way or another through puppet-swift because a patch for this won't reasonably make it into the upstream packages for a while ?
14:54 prad joined #puppet-openstack
15:08 fc__ dmsimard: I think that running swift-proxy directly as swift user (requires changing the init script)
15:10 fc__ dmsimard: (that's what init scripts on Debian are doing it seems)
15:12 dmsimard Let me see ..

15:18 marun joined #puppet-openstack
15:21 dmsimard fc__: Yeah, that's indeed what debian does
15:29 pzimmer joined #puppet-openstack
15:58 dmsimard fc__: Can't seem to be able to find a way to make it work by modifying the init
15:58 fc__ :( I'm currently stuck in a meeting, but I'll try to reproduce this later
15:59 dmsimard fc__: It's okay, I'll submit a bug to puppet-swift in the meantime since I can't seem to be able to fix this myself :(
15:59 fc__ dmsimard: seems a good idea anyway
16:00 fc__ dmsimard: another *dirty* option would be to force ceilometer logging to syslog.
16:00 fc__ dmsimard: I guess it would work (not sure)
16:01 dmsimard fc__: Well, logs are one thing. I think moving everything to /var/log/swift could be clean enough
16:01 dmsimard fc__: Got to find a good compromise for /etc/ceilometer/ceilometer.conf though
16:01 fc__ oh, indeed

16:47 hogepodge I think that there's a regression in keystone
16:48 hogepodge Looks like the keystone_user_role provider is failing.
16:48 mgagne hogepodge: bodepd told me about a use case where the provider was failing but couldn't remember which one.
16:49 hogepodge I noticed the failure with the latest havana build. Definitely a regression.
16:49 mgagne hogepodge: oh... still using grizzly ^^' working on havana atm
16:50 hogepodge For some reason the user-role-add is not getting the role-id

17:40 jgriffith Anybody here have some time to educate me on puppet-openstack, versus using foreman, packstack, fuel, etc?
17:40 angdraug joined #puppet-openstack
17:40 marun joined #puppet-openstack
17:41 jgriffith barring the pxe boot and server deploy piece, trying to determine why I'd go with one over another
17:48 hogepodge Not so much a regression in keystone as a bug
17:49 hogepodge If a role doesn't exist but it asked for, it returns nil and bombs out.
17:49 hogepodge I'll submit a bug and patch it up.
17:49 hogepodge puppet-openstack is a mess. Strongly discourage using it for anything but seeing how the modules work. @jgriffith
17:50 hogepodge jgriffith what's your end goal?
17:50 jgriffith hogepodge: haha... well that's useful
17:50 jgriffith hogepodge: looking at something to use in production
17:51 jgriffith hogepodge: ie repetitive/multiple installs
17:51 jgriffith hogepodge: for folks with minimal openstack knowledge
17:51 hogepodge So RDO is using packstack and foreman, and it's the seed for RHOS. It's a good place to start.
17:51 hogepodge How robust do you want your deployments to be. I'm not sure if any of those give you HA, for example.
17:51 jgriffith hogepodge: yeah, I've used it and had good luck... just wondering if there was an argument to NOT generalize the OS/Platform
17:52 jgriffith HA is a requirement
17:52 jgriffith I know Fuel does HA... assumed Foreman did but might be wrong
17:53 jgriffith hogepodge: really I've just been trying to wrap my head around why we EVERYBODY is working on their own puppet modules
17:53 jgriffith hogepodge: Fuel, Rackspace, Redhat, Community etc etc
17:53 jgriffith hogepodge: instead of making one good community version
17:54 hogepodge Because of support and sales.
17:54 jgriffith hogepodge: well... thats' the obvious answer yes :)
17:54 hogepodge bodepd has been trying to tackle the problem
17:54 hogepodge But it's nearly impossible to write a module that will meet everyone's needs.
17:54 jgriffith That's understandable
17:54 hogepodge What does HA mean for you? What hypervisor/network/storage backends do you want to use?
17:55 hogepodge What's your controller/database/compute/storage design?
17:55 jgriffith HA is multiple controllers for me
17:55 jgriffith My storage handles the HA for that piece on it's own
17:55 jgriffith KVM
17:55 hogepodge So, we're dropping support for the OpenStack module.
17:55 jgriffith Oh... well that's good to know
17:55 jgriffith Mysql db
17:56 hogepodge Going to replace it the the puppetlabs-havana/puppetlabs-grizzly line of modules.
17:56 hogepodge Part of the idea is to get a reference module out there that can be customized.
17:56 jgriffith hogepodge: those in better shape I assume?
17:56 hogepodge puppetlabs-grizzly is complete, but simple
17:56 jgriffith hogepodge: ok... that's actually likely exactly what I'm looking for
17:56 hogepodge puppetlabs-havana is under development, currently adding support for heat-ceil
17:57 rmoe joined #puppet-openstack
17:57 hogepodge You should also look at the work bodepd is doing. It's much more comprehensive
17:57 jgriffith hogepodge: cool
17:57 hogepodge Hope that helps.
17:57 jgriffith hogepodge: I'll look at puppet's version and try and catch up with bodepd on what he's got
17:57 jgriffith hogepodge: VERY helpful... thank you very much!

18:38 mgagne jgriffith: so far, vendors managed to do a better than us in that aspect =)
18:39 jgriffith mgagne: that's too bad :(  But the key is on "so far" :)
18:39 jgriffith mgagne: game's not over yet
18:41 mgagne jgriffith: yes, we (I) have developed our own module too. The main issue with puppet is that it isn't easy to design a composition layer that can accommodate everyone's needs without ending up with a mess like puppet-openstack.
18:41 jgriffith mgagne: understood... which figures given that's the trouble with openstack deployment to begin with :)
18:41 mgagne jgriffith: =)
18:43 mgagne jgriffith: not that our private module is better by being less frankenstein =)
18:45 jgriffith mgagne: haha... that's kinda what happens no matter what I suppose
