00:12 michchap hogepodge: hey
00:12 hogepodge hey
00:13 michchap "Actually, I want to see code like that broken out into a new library. puppet-openstack-lib"
00:13 michchap https://github.com/michaeltchapman/puppet-openstacklib
00:13 michchap I'm planning on bringing the repo code currently in puppet-openstack into this
00:14 hogepodge heh
00:14 hogepodge Good idea.
00:14 hogepodge I would also like to see common database code abstracted into a library.
00:14 hogepodge Every module except for ceil basically has the same setup.
00:15 michchap and ceil should be patches to be the same tbh
00:15 hogepodge It's a special case because MongoDB
00:15 michchap patched*
00:15 michchap the structure is different though
00:15 michchap you can still run ceilometer with mysql, but it's laid out differently to the other modules iirc
00:16 hogepodge Yeah. Cail requires a lot of unstructured data to be written, which makes it funny.
00:17 michchap Anyway...I'm using that module at the moment as part of a cleanup of the puppet_openstack_builder model - trying to reduce the number of helper classes down to one.
00:18 michchap I'm happy to put it on stackforge if it's going to be useful for anyone else.
00:18 michchap helper modules *
00:19 hogepodge If we can abstract away a lot of common code once its in place, I'm all for it.
00:19 hogepodge I think that an Icehouse release might be too ambitious, but planning to do a big refactor after that makes a lot of sense.
00:21 michchap I'm actually hoping to have the data model refactored for its icehouse release - it will lag by a bit while we test it anyway.
00:21 hogepodge I know that we really want to release the Icehouse modules as close to day 1 as we can.
00:22 michchap Yep :)
00:23 michchap any news on the summit?
00:23 dvorak hogepodge: you see michchap's comment on the collector removal?  I'm ok with making it conditional or removing it
00:23 hogepodge Not too much. Information is slow to trickle out. I've asked but no news. I think they're swamped.
00:26 prad joined #puppet-openstack
00:26 dvorak michchap: I'm not sure that removing the apt_get update dep is a change in (intended) behavior.  Without it, when UCA is added an apt-get update does get triggered
00:27 hogepodge dvorak michchap any idea for a parameter name?
00:27 hogepodge If people depend on the behavior.
00:27 michchap dvorak: but can't a package be installed before that happens?
00:27 michchap enforce_package_ordering or soemthing
00:28 michchap idk I'm terrible with names
00:28 dvorak yeah, fair enough
00:28 hogepodge I haven't seen the dependency problems, so my concern is if there's behavior that people depend upon.
00:28 dvorak I think changing the behavior on master is reasonable, but I'd like to see this backported to stable/havana, so I'm ok with whatever.
00:28 michchap dvorak: absolutely wrap it if you're planning on backporting it
00:29 dvorak nod
00:29 dvorak I think the behavior is kind of broken, but I agree that people may be depending on it being there.
00:29 hogepodge Agree there. Havana should stay stable for semver.
00:30 michchap dvorak: not having anything to specify apt::source -> update -> Package<||> will almost certainly cause issues with my site if I don't add the deps somewhere else.
00:30 rwsu joined #puppet-openstack
00:30 hogepodge Adding the conditional seems the best choice.
00:30 dvorak michchap: yeah, my point is just that this is really a local policy issue, not a openstack/puppet issue.  I agree that we shouldn't break existing installs, but the behavior isn't desirable overall
00:31 dvorak I'm not sure when you'd actually want to make a non-backwards compatible change, but it seems like soemthing that should happen eventually
00:31 michchap dvorak: my problem with that is that then the module doesn't work out of the box
00:32 hogepodge This comes back to the puppet-openstack-lib
00:32 hogepodge Get the behavior right there, and leave puppet-openstack to be the trouble it is.
00:33 michchap hogepodge: yep. I haven't moved the uca and rdo classes across yet but it's on my shortlist
00:35 michchap hogepodge: unless you're planning on doing/already have done an openstack-lib you want to push up to the forge
00:36 hogepodge I don't have anything ready.
00:36 dvorak ok, that works for me.  I'm going to do a little more research and then I'll wrap a conditional around it and name it enforce_package_ordering.
00:36 michchap dvorak: thanks :)
00:36 hogepodge Keep the default behavior as it is for puppet-openstack, then we can do it right in the library.
00:37 dvorak so I've seen a few comments about how puppet-openstack is getting replaced.  Is there somewhere I can read up on the plan for that?
00:38 michchap I don't think there's an official plan. I just pushed up a module to my private github that may be the start of it, or there may be something from someone else that is better.
00:38 michchap At present most sites have their own composition layer
00:39 rmoe joined #puppet-openstack
00:39 hogepodge Back at the summit we talked about replacing it with my composition module (puppetlabs-grizzly, not pupptlabs-havana)
00:40 hogepodge I'm thinking about just pointing people to the wealth of modules that are out there.
00:40 hogepodge Rather than favoring just one.
00:41 hogepodge The purpose of the puppet-openstack module was for deployment and education. It grew organically, but not necessarily cleanly.
00:42 hogepodge If I were to do a wholesale replacement, I'm not sure how to properly code review it.
00:44 openstackgerrit joined #puppet-openstack
00:47 xarses joined #puppet-openstack
01:01 dvorak I've not done much rspec puppet work.  Any pointers on how I might write a test for this conditional?
01:09 hogepodge since it's not running any code in the spec, you can set the value, then make sure it's set. Also check for existence (or lack of) within the conditional.
01:10 dvorak I was trying to figure out how to do the latter
01:10 dvorak I can check to make sure the exec exists, and I should be able to make sure it's required by a package, but I don't know how to define a package in the test that the collector would collect

01:44 michchap dvorak: sorry I got dragged to a meeting. I can help after I grab lunch if you still need it
01:50 xingchao joined #puppet-openstack
01:52 dvorak michchap: thanks.  I could use some help figuring out if I can get better coverage on these tests.
01:53 dvorak I'm hoping to commit a new patch set soon though, which at least improves the situation

07:57 markvoelker1 hmm...that's weird. I have 1.8.7 on multiple machines and haven't seen a segfault

07:57 markvoelker1 Ah.  So, Icehouse code then?
07:57 michchap I think apache was the start of it
07:58 michchap nah not openstack modules, apache and maybe rabbit
07:58 markvoelker1 ok
07:58 michchap once I have a workaround for this I'm ready to push my scenario up to the data model so you can see it yourself

18:45 hogepodge puppet-swift is teh wurst dmsimard
18:46 dmsimard hogepodge: I know, except I'm not knowledgeable enough about puppet and swift to turn it around
18:47 dmsimard hogepodge: I think I 'just' got something fairly satisfactory working now. The circular dependency of exported resources are especially painful (e.g, storage needs proxy and proxy needs storage)
18:47 mgagne dmsimard: you could get rid of exported resources with an ENC I would say =)
18:47 dmsimard mgagne: show me your wisdom
18:48 mgagne dmsimard: http://docs.puppetlabs.com/guides/external_nodes.html
18:48 mgagne dmsimard: your node definitions are handled by an external system and all the magic is done there.
18:48 openstackgerrit Donald Talton proposed a change to stackforge/puppet-nova: Added the ability to manage the nova uid/gid.  https://review.openstack.org/76298
18:50 dmsimard mgagne: yeah.. non-trivial for me I'm afraid, i'll have to read on that
18:50 hogepodge Yup. I use the puppetdb module to help with the exported resources.
18:50 mgagne dmsimard: I don't think puppet alone is scalable and easy to manage without an external system
18:50 hogepodge Sets up puppetdb, run on storage nodes, run on proxy, run on storage nodes
18:50 hogepodge The rsync server doesn't always work, though.
18:51 mgagne hogepodge: yha, ENC can/should leverage puppetdb
18:51 hogepodge I'm coming to the opinion that the swift ring should be set up explicitly and managed by something like hiera
18:52 hogepodge You can look at my puppetlabs-havana module for how I crudely set it up with my vagrant example scripts
18:52 mgagne hogepodge: that's my opinion too, I'm really thinking about moving away from exported resources and using an ENC instead.
18:52 hogepodge +1 mgagne
18:52 mgagne hogepodge: challenge is that we want to be able to add any arbitrary number of ctrl/node/whatever without having to update hiera or other config files
18:53 hogepodge I think if you want to do that with swift you should just use ceph. :-P
18:53 mgagne hogepodge: however I'm open to have to add a node to an UI/ENC (combined with a baremetal provisioning system)
18:53 mgagne hogepodge: it's not just about swift =)
18:53 hogepodge Swift is static and heavy handed. Doesn't really lend itself to dynamic scaling.
18:53 mgagne hogepodge: hehe
18:54 hogepodge I see what you're saying. The rest of the openstack services scale really well, especially with worker nodes.
18:54 hogepodge As long as the worker nodes know where the catalog is.
18:55 mgagne hogepodge: the only issues we had is with decommissioned nodes/ctrl, they tend to stick around due to exported resources.
18:55 dmsimard hogepodge: I don't think I ultimately want to continually manage swift with puppet - too dangerous IMO. For the initial installation though, sure. Kind of the same worry I have with ceph
18:56 mgagne dmsimard: I'm looking for something similar to https://swiftstack.com where you can manage your stuff through a UI
18:56 hogepodge I don't mind managing swift with puppet. I do mind how the puppet-swift module does it.
18:56 hogepodge It's a clever solution that approaches it the best way it can for being able to dynamically change your system. But I naturally find having to do multiple puppet runs to convergence offensive.
18:57 mgagne hogepodge: I see our puppet modules as a bunch of libraries. You can't rely on bare modules only.
18:57 hogepodge Exactly. I agree.
18:58 mgagne hogepodge: and that's why there is 56 composition layers popping all around
18:58 hogepodge do you think that there can be one composition layer to rule them all?
18:58 mgagne hogepodge: no
18:59 mgagne hogepodge: you won't be able to support all the combinaison of drivers/backends without compromises
18:59 hogepodge Yup.
19:00 dmsimard lowest common denominator.

19:59 dvorak markvoelker1: I've been seeing weird endpoint issues on the stable/havana branch, any chance my problems are related?
20:00 markvoelker1 dvorak: Yeah, possibly.  If you're not explicitly setting values for the admin/public endpoints, the defaults are unversioned and don't seem to play nice.
20:00 dvorak I'm not, and setting it to versioned values seemed to solve the problem

20:02 dvorak will that get backported to stable/havana?
20:02 markvoelker1 Once it's up to snuff I'll backport it.
20:02 dvorak ok
20:02 dvorak for the time being, should I just set the endpoints to false in hiera?
20:03 dvorak I have them set to v2.0 for now, but I'd rather not set them to anything specific if I can avoid it
20:04 markvoelker1 Hmm...I've not tried setting them to false actually.  If you do I think you'll still wind up with those directives in your config file, but I don't recall offhand how Keystone will handle them being set to null
20:04 dvorak oh I see, this SSL patch that went into stable/havana yesterday broke it
20:04 markvoelker1 I just worked around it at the composition layer by setting the versioning explicitly since that's what the old behavior ended up doing anyway.

20:11 markvoelker1 Note how they're also unversioned...but that doesn't seem to work in the real world.  Talking with some keystone folks to see if that's a doc bug that needs fixing.
20:11 dvorak well, the problem I have is that I wasn't setting it at all, and now everything that uses keystone is broken.  seems less than ideal for a stable branch
