00:00 Belussi_ : Error 400 on SERVER: Puppet::Parser::AST::Resource failed with error ArgumentError: Could not find
00:00 Belussi_ this is what I get all the time
00:03 hogepodge Belussi_ you’re using which composition module?
00:04 Belussi_ Iyou mean puppetlabs-openstack???
00:04 Belussi_ I ahve install it by this way: puppet module install puppetlabs-openstack --version 4.0.0 --force
00:05 hogepodge shouldn’t have to force it on PE, but I can check that.
00:05 hogepodge Ubuntu 12.04 isn’t supported yet, and I’m not sure it will ever be.
00:05 Belussi_ ok...
00:05 hogepodge It needs a back-ported kernel, and I haven’t dont a successful deployment with neutron.
00:06 Belussi_ So, What should i use??? Centos?
00:06 hogepodge 14.04 works when installing from master, but for the modules we have to wait for the ML2 backport to icehouse (which is under review)
00:06 hogepodge CentOS is verified, yes.
00:07 hogepodge Plus I have automatic tooling to bring it up on CentOS if you’re using Vagrant/VMWare
00:07 hogepodge Now that all the pieces are moving in place, I’m expecting two weeks for Ubuntu 14.04 release (puppetlabs-openstack 4.1.0)
00:08 Belussi_ I have to try with Centos :) 6.5 will be ok???
00:08 hogepodge It’s what I mainly develop on.
00:08 hogepodge :-)
00:09 hogepodge The modules should work, master needs a patch for a packaging bug

12:22 dmsimard Last day @ work today
12:22 aldavud :D
12:22 aldavud good to hear!
12:22 dmsimard I can check some reviews if you want today
12:22 dmsimard This is not going to be a very productive day for me, lol
12:22 aldavud tgif ;)
12:22 dmsimard yeah you know what
12:22 dmsimard In fact I'll do that today
12:23 dmsimard I'll go over the current commits
12:23 aldavud would be highly appreciated :D
12:25 dmsimard aldavud: Oh, that's a lot of reviews
12:25 dmsimard T_T
12:25 dmsimard Guessing it's dachary's students :p
12:25 aldavud mostly
12:26 aldavud but dachary and me are taking care of it :)
12:27 aldavud the general rule is that if there is no +2 by dachary you can generally ignore them
12:27 dmsimard aldavud: Some of these are starting to date, too. https://review.openstack.org/#/c/100568/ is an easy fix
12:28 aldavud true
12:28 aldavud but I guess apart from making it harder to get an overview it's not really problematic as it's non-critical stuff
12:30 aldavud dmsimard: personally I would be very happy if you could look through these: https://review.openstack.org/#/q/owner:%22David+Gurtner%22+status:open,n,z
12:30 dmsimard aldavud: I am right now
12:30 dmsimard aldavud: https://review.openstack.org/#/c/98382/3/examples/common.yaml
12:31 dmsimard aldavud: Any particular reason why we wouldn't generate the keyring file ?
12:32 dmsimard aldavud: I'm also not sure about class inheritance in general
12:33 aldavud dmsimard: it is a feature request by the guys from cern: https://wiki.openstack.org/wiki/Puppet-openstack/ceph-blueprint#Keeping_keys_.2F_secrets_out_of_Puppet
12:33 dmsimard aldavud: http://docs.puppetlabs.com/guides/style_guide.html#class-inheritance
12:34 aldavud dmsimard: iirc I'm only using it withing the profile module.
12:35 dmsimard aldavud: The current puppet-ceph I use in my CI (on which I haven't officially worked on in a long time) is https://github.com/TelekomCloud/puppet-ceph/tree/rc/eisbrecher of which I worked on with dalgaaf
12:36 dmsimard aldavud: DTAG use puppet-secret to manage keys https://github.com/TelekomCloud/puppet-secret
12:36 dmsimard aldavud: It's okay for the time being but perhaps we could look into it later
12:37 dmsimard I'm sure dalgaaf would have an opinion on how to manage security in the module, he's done a lot of work involving encryption in Ceph itself and they have these means to provide secure deployment with things like puppet-secret.
12:38 aldavud dmsimard: I guess the request from the Cern people is to keep the secrets out of puppet entirely
12:38 aldavud dmsimard: as they share Puppet Masters accross organisational units
12:40 dmsimard aldavud: Interesting. We're looking into ways to secure stuff away effectively from developers here too. :)
12:41 aldavud dmsimard: basically they get the keys as files via kerberos authenticated scp
12:41 aldavud dmsimard: thus the need to pass in the key as an existing file
12:43 dmsimard aldavud: Agree that we should be able to use both ways
12:49 dmsimard dachary: what's up with all your -2's on your reviews ?

12:55 openstackgerrit A change was merged to stackforge/puppet-ceph: Mon profile for roles/profiles pattern  https://review.openstack.org/98382
12:55 dmsimard aldavud: Let's say I want to make an openstack compute a ceph client with a client.volumes or client.images key
12:55 aldavud dmsimard: that was not my intention, no.
12:56 dmsimard openstack compute node *
12:56 aldavud dmsimard: a was considering actually calling it "admin" instead of client
12:56 dmsimard aldavud: Would you reconsider making it more generic, defaulting to admin? :)
12:57 dmsimard I see a good opportunity for that use case
12:58 aldavud dmsimard: hmm, isn't that just what ceph::key does?
12:59 dmsimard aldavud: Yeah but client wraps around key
13:00 dmsimard aldavud: I'd love to make servers ceph clients using the profiles, not necessarily admin
13:00 aldavud dmsimard: so should the whole interface of ceph::key be supported?
13:03 dmsimard aldavud: Ah.. I see how it could become complex
13:05 dmsimard aldavud: Ok. I still think client should be more generic but that involves some work so the current implementation is fine

13:08 dmsimard I follow some Enovance folks so perhaps it came form there
13:08 dmsimard dmsimard
13:08 aldavud I hear eNovance is going to be a part of Red Hat now
13:08 dmsimard aldavud: yeah
13:09 EmilienM aldavud: right, we are a "Red Hat company" but stay eNovance now.
13:14 dmsimard aldavud, dachary: We need to find a way to gate properly with the profiles
13:15 dmsimard I'll see with mgagne today see what he thinks we could do.. the easy way would be to split the roles/profiles into another repo and have different gates there, like have 2.7 non-voting or remove it entirely
13:15 dachary aldavud: eNovance or inktank acquisition means they disolve into Red Hat. But that does not happen instantaneously and it will take a few months before assimilation is complete.
13:16 mattymo I worked at RH for a while, so I saw a lot of acquisitions
13:16 mattymo first 6 months is quiet... then maybe an office might get moved or renovated as needed
13:17 mattymo and your email gets moved over... and that's probably the most painful part
13:18 dachary mattymo: inktank mails now have their redhat counterpart but people move when they feel like it, apparently. I saw Sage mailing with @redhat.com yesterday ;-)
13:18 dmsimard dachary: yeah and he even got sage@redhat.com
13:18 dachary :-D
13:19 aldavud I wonder what the name policy on @redhat.com Adresses is
13:19 dachary EmilienM: if this goes as for inktank you'll get your @redhat.com mail with a few weeks.
13:20 EmilienM dachary: I'm not aware about anything, I'm continuing like before now :)
13:20 aldavud I'm getting mail from all kind of firstnames, lastnames, initials and any possible combinations
13:21 dachary I'm told Red Hat is not picky about using personal emails for contributions (as long as the company affiliation shows somehow). Is that true mattymo ?
13:22 britthou_ joined #puppet-openstack
13:23 aldavud dmsimard: dachary: re:gating probably dropping 2.7 would be a sensible idea, as we are not planning on supporting it for much longer anyways
13:23 openstackgerrit A change was merged to stackforge/puppet-ceph: add Gemfile-rspec-system.lock to .gitignore  https://review.openstack.org/102859
13:25 dmsimard aldavud: I'm not sure we want to drop 2.7 entirely from puppet-ceph. We had a discussion a few weeks back that we should probably deprecate 2.7 by the Juno release and cut by the K. We're not on Openstack cycles but that seemed like a sensible timeline to drop support.
13:25 dmsimard We can move 2.7 to non-voting at Juno and remove it at K
13:26 dachary aldavud: ok to drop 2.7
13:27 dmsimard dachary: entirely ?
13:27 dachary I really don't mind. I'm not recommending we do it. I just say that I don't mind.
13:27 dachary what you propose (i.e. drop by K) is sensible and I also agree to this.
13:28 * dachary quite agreeable today
13:28 dmsimard I personally don't mind either, I'm just looking at Ubuntu 12.04 and CentOS 6 that ships with puppet 2.7
13:28 dmsimard If we drop 2.7, we need to make it clear
13:29 dmsimard I haven't personally used 2.7 in a very long time, even on 12.04 I use 3.1+ from puppetlab repos
13:29 dmsimard xarses: ping? ^
13:29 aldavud ubuntu 12.04 is less of a worry, as 14.04 is out. also ceph on precise kernels is having some issues
13:30 dmsimard aldavud: Probably not as bad since 3.11 is in 12.04.4
13:30 openstackgerrit Martin Mágr proposed a change to stackforge/puppet-heat: Implement Keystone domain creation  https://review.openstack.org/103127
13:30 dmsimard 3.2 is starting to be old, indeed, though
13:30 aldavud but there's not yet an alternative to centos 6
13:30 dmsimard CentOS 7 is slated to be released in the short term I think but I'm not following the red hat world too much
13:31 aldavud dmsimard: even with 3.11 there are quite some issues when using krbd
13:31 dmsimard aldavud: CentOS 7 is in RC right now, ships with 3.10
13:32 dmsimard Looks like they'll be stuck with 3.10 for a while, just like they kept 2.6.32 forever

17:37 hogepodge EmilienM https://review.openstack.org/#/c/102054/ ?
17:37 hogepodge markvoelker ^^ ?
17:40 * markvoelker looks
17:41 hogepodge It’s marked at wip, but that patch (along with the ml2 inifile patch that was just submitted) need to get out to stable/icehouse.
17:42 markvoelker hogepodge: So this was the one that looked...weird.  I'm confused about why we're removing firewall_driver (looks like you were too?) and not doing any graceful deprecation either.
17:42 markvoelker EmilienM wrote the original patch in master and WIP'd this one I think
17:42 markvoelker So guessing maybe he's on it?
17:43 hogepodge It’s a backport of what’s in master of a new feature. It didn’t have time to land in Icehouse, so it’s kind of a special case.
17:43 hogepodge It’s not in master, the firewall driver https://github.com/stackforge/puppet-neutron/blob/master/manifests/plugins/ml2.pp
17:44 markvoelker Ah, but it is in Icehouse?
17:44 markvoelker https://review.openstack.org/#/c/82353/
17:45 markvoelker Waitaminute...that landed June 10.  How's it not in master then?
17:46 hogepodge He removed the firewall driver from master in that patch you just posted.
17:47 markvoelker I'm missing the "why" there though.
17:47 hogepodge The problem was that the ml2/ovs plugin never worked in master. EmilienM patched it, but it was so close to the summit it didn’t make it to stable/icehouse. Semver is kind of a red herring in this, because the patch was always intended for icehouse
17:47 hogepodge The why is because the firewall driver is now an ml2 plugin.
17:47 hogepodge It’s configured somewhere else.
17:47 hogepodge (as part of the plugins list)
17:48 markvoelker OK, but no deprecation to let users know about it?
17:49 hogepodge I don’t think it was being used, which was the problem.
17:49 hogepodge this is all targeting ml2, which wasn’t usable (afaik) until icehouse.
17:50 hogepodge I could be wrong, though. michchap?
17:51 hogepodge I switched from monolithic to ml2, so there was no api issue for me.
17:51 markvoelker I'm thinking we don't have a good way to measure that. =)  Even if the pure Stackforge code didn't work right, folks are known to base off stackforge and then modify.
17:51 markvoelker IMHO it might be reasonable to remove a short-lived param in master before it's actually released without graceful deprecation (maybe) but seems like very bad form in stable branch. Why not just add a deprecation warning?
17:52 hogepodge Sure, I can see that. It feels like overkill in this case.
17:54 hogepodge To me, the issue is anyone who tried to use ml2 before that patch would have a broken system. We didn’t support ml2 until the June 10 patch landed, so although in reality we did have at api, in practice the api was broken and a wip
17:54 hogepodge As with everything surrounding neutron, a bit of a mess
17:57 markvoelker Sure, understood. That's partly why I didn't vote -2 the patch, but IMHO we don't help fix that "bit of a mess" by employing bad habits.  It costs maybe three or four lines of code to deprecate gracefully such that anyone who was using it as a base and got things working for themselves gets notified.
17:58 hogepodge right. Thanks for keeping me honest. :-)
17:59 markvoelker =)  If others are agreed that we don't need to gracefully deprecate due to the brokenness I won't stand it the way. I'm guessing from EmilienM's -2 that he might want to tweak it a bit more too though.
17:59 openstackgerrit A change was merged to stackforge/puppet-neutron: Link from ovs config file to plugin.ini on RedHat  https://review.openstack.org/102570
18:00 hogepodge Yeah. We he comes back online we can chat about it.
18:00 hogepodge Thanks for taking time to talk with me about it.
18:01 markvoelker Thanks for bringing it up!
18:03 markvoelker hogepodge: is this a patch you need urgently?  I would be happy to submit another patchset with graceful deprecation if that would help move things along....I imagine EmilienM is already enjoying his weekend. =)
18:03 hogepodge Yeah, I need a new release of neutron to fix bugs and add ml2
18:03 hogepodge I have a two week window, though.
18:04 hogepodge Since I’m developing against master, we can work around it.
18:04 markvoelker Ok.  I can probably take a swing at it in the next hour or so if that helps...
18:04 hogepodge Sure, I can swipe at it too if you’re busy.
18:04 markvoelker I could use a break from staring at ceilometer patches anyway =p
18:05 hogepodge I’m looking at neutron discussion about this. I think they removed firewall_driver from the agent. I don’t think it’s configurable.
