15:02 EmilienM not sure that we have a meeting/agenda today
15:09 xarses I've been running into https://bugs.launchpad.net/fuel/+bug/1246795 on upstream puppet-neutron. Looks like something I should probably push back up
15:10 hogepodge joined #puppet-openstack
15:10 hogepodge Sorry, late start this morning.
15:10 xarses probably related, I'm seeing router/network/subnetwork resources being duplicated through successive puppet runs
15:11 hogepodge xarses I’ve been seeing the same error
15:11 hogepodge what’s the source/fix?
15:12 hogepodge Ah, waiting for the resource to appear.
15:12 xarses of the bug? It looks like one of the fuel guys shored up the error handling and retries
15:14 xarses ok, I added puppet-neutron to the bug and assigned myself

16:37 hogepodge mgagne hi
16:38 openstackgerrit Clayton O'Neill proposed a change to stackforge/puppet-nova: Change default MySQL module api to 2.x  https://review.openstack.org/102060
16:38 mgagne hogepodge: I finally understood the thing with ml2 plugin
16:38 hogepodge dvorak I’ll take a look. Sorry it’s taken me so long. Take a look at this too. It’s important to move mysql forward, but this is moportant too. https://review.openstack.org/#/c/104289/
16:39 hogepodge mgagne I was really worried that we had done something wrong
16:39 mgagne hogepodge: with the "old" plugins, you can use the neutron::agents::ovs manifest without including neutron::plugin::ovs
16:39 mgagne hogepodge: BUT
16:40 mgagne hogepodge: with ML2, you HAVE to include the plugin manifest because it defines configs required by the agent
16:40 hogepodge yeah
16:40 mgagne hogepodge: and since you HAVE to include it, the symlink will be properly created
16:40 mgagne hogepodge: I tried to install RDO last friday but the mirror was down =(
16:40 mgagne hogepodge: will check later today if I find time
16:41 hogepodge ah. I’ve had RDO breakages so many times, usually the worst times. Usually because of updates.
16:41 mgagne hogepodge: not the first time RDO mirror is down according to google...
16:41 mgagne hogepodge: so the only issue I find is
16:42 mgagne hogepodge: the requirement on neutron::plugins::ml2 is not expressed in neutron::agents::ml2::ovs
16:42 xarses hogepodge: I don't think you saw, but I got to about to the same point as you where over the weekend.
16:42 xarses vif_type=binding_failed messages
16:45 xarses which I suppose you saw, could be from any number of reasons
16:46 hogepodge xarses it’s a truly annoying message
16:46 hogepodge no help whatsoever
16:47 hogepodge xarses it was a rdo packaging thing for me in the end

17:45 bodepd xarses: in my case, the bridge-mappings weren't set up correctly
17:47 xarses bodepd: yea, I'm guessing that's where I should start.

17:54 openstackgerrit Liran Cohen proposed a change to stackforge/puppet-nova: Support for heal_instance_info_cache_interval  https://review.openstack.org/105245
17:55 bodepd xarses: just follow the logs :)
17:55 bodepd iirc, I had to bump everything up to debug in neutron land
17:57 xarses bodepd: the logs in this case appear to be (near) impossible to follow because of noise
17:57 hogepodge neutron debugging is a disaster.
17:57 xarses +1
17:58 hogepodge for the symlink problem the logs were unhelpful because ovs-agent thought it was happy, because the bad default config worked just fine.
17:59 hogepodge xarses I look for where the exception is (say in nova/compute.log) and track back with the timestamp to help with the noise.
17:59 xarses ya, I might have to install splunk again

22:31 crinkle bodepd: we're wondering what the plan is for https://review.openstack.org/#/c/97647/ with regard to https://github.com/bodepd/puppet-openstack_extras
22:31 hogepodge it looks like your extras is what is the libs in stackforge too
22:34 openstackgerrit Ivan Chavero proposed a change to stackforge/puppet-neutron: Fixes plugin.ini error  https://review.openstack.org/105293
22:36 bodepd I had started working on extras, and imported the things that I needed into my local repo
22:36 bodepd a lot of these things I grabbed from michap's openstacklib, some of cisco
22:36 bodepd s repos, and the old _extras repo
22:37 bodepd crinkle: ^^
22:37 bodepd crinkle: I was hoping you might take at least bits of that work and go through the process of getting things approved/merged
22:37 bodepd etc
22:38 ricardorocha joined #puppet-openstack
22:38 bodepd I thought the intention of libs vs. extras was that lib would hold base libs that are reused by modules, where extras would hold higher level things
22:39 bodepd like perhaps a monitoring direcotry for various monitoring scripts, or composition classes
22:39 bodepd I had questions as to whether things like repos belonged in lib or extras
22:39 bodepd or even how to make those decisions
22:40 bodepd mgagne: felt pretty strongly that repos and everything except libraries (parent providers, ruby modules, defined resource types) probably belonged in extras
22:40 hogepodge bodepd I think repos belong in lib. My feeling is that you need the repos to install and configure.
22:40 crinkle bodepd: okay, just wanted to make sure I wasn't stepping on toes if I started working on the stackforge version
22:41 bodepd crinkle: nah, if you want to run with it, please do so
22:41 bodepd crinkle: feel free to grab and use the code that I had placed in extras
22:41 crinkle bodepd: awesome, ty
22:41 bodepd crinkle: and feel free to ask questions as to what code came from where :)
22:41 bodepd hogepodge: I'
22:42 bodepd I'm not fussed about what goes where, mgagne cared a lot,.
22:42 bodepd crinkle: right now, extras contained the things that I needed to deploy openstack for my test env, without having to use cisco specific modules or the old deprecated openstack module
22:43 hogepodge the hope is lib will get you there.
22:43 mgagne bodepd: my feeling is that openstacklib should be a place to put pieces of code/manifests that other puppet modules for openstack should consumed, not the end users. anything that could be used by a composition layer (the end user) should go in extras.
22:43 bodepd crinkle: some of these may or may not wind up there. Once all decisions are made, I'm happy to adjust my upstream module accordingly
22:43 mgagne bodepd: otherwise I don't see the point of having extras around
22:43 openstackgerrit Colleen Murphy proposed a change to stackforge/puppet-openstacklib: Add db::mysql and db::mysql::host_access to openstacklib  https://review.openstack.org/105280
22:44 bodepd mgagne: I agree as well, this goes back to the old question of where do repos go
22:44 bodepd mgagne: I, honestly don't care ( I could see an argument for either)
22:44 mgagne bodepd: you know my opinion =)
22:44 bodepd but those who do care should sort it out :)
22:44 bodepd well PL is putting the patches together for extras, the repo is going in lib
22:44 hogepodge Why extras for repos mgagne? They’re such a fundamental component, I feel they need to be in lib
22:44 mgagne bodepd: those who don't care will mix up both lib and extras and duplicate/move stuff around between those 2
22:44 bodepd (if I understand correctly)
22:45 mgagne hogepodge: see my explanation
22:45 bodepd mgagne: I think in general, there is a pretty clear line.
22:46 hogepodge I see, I just don’t see how repos fit into that. Aren’t they critical for all of the modules?
22:47 mgagne hogepodge: you don't need openstack_extras to run openstack. even if you think you HAVE to setup a repo, it's blatantly false.
22:47 mgagne hogepodge: puppet-nova doesn't care about the repo
22:48 hogepodge mgagne, ok, I see.
22:49 tfhartmann joined #puppet-openstack
22:49 hogepodge So what does that mean for databases? Install with extras but configure with lib?
22:50 mgagne hogepodge: if you want puppet to manage your mysql server (not the database), IMO, it should be done by extras
22:50 openstackgerrit Ivan Chavero proposed a change to stackforge/puppet-neutron: Fixes plugin.ini error  https://review.openstack.org/105293
22:51 hogepodge ok
22:52 mgagne hogepodge: what's the difference between lib and extras? What do you want it to be?
22:52 mgagne hogepodge: I thought lib was introduced to reduce code duplication and to create building blocks for the modules themselves just like oslo.
22:53 mgagne hogepodge: and extras for softwares / configs to support an openstack infra: database, messaging, repo, monitoring, etc.
22:54 hogepodge that would cover it. I was thinking in terms of dependencies, the modules depend on lib, extras depends on the modules
22:54 mgagne hogepodge: this is another aspect, yes
22:54 hogepodge mgagne is guess one of the problems is that it’s defined abstractly, but the abstractions can shift a bit.
22:55 hogepodge Would it be too onerous for me to ask you to write your ideas down in a spec?
22:55 dencaval joined #puppet-openstack
22:55 hogepodge Because I’m seeing the logic of what you’re saying.
22:55 mgagne hogepodge: I could try to find time for it
22:56 mgagne hogepodge: I guess that one way to see it is if a module REQUIRES the manifest, it should go in lib
22:57 hogepodge mgagne if you just shoot me a list of how you want things divided I can take a stab at the spec
23:17 openstackgerrit Colleen Murphy proposed a change to stackforge/puppet-openstack_extras: Create basic module structure with required files  https://review.openstack.org/105302
