07:20 social anyone from puppet keystone?
07:21 EmilienM social: go ahead
07:22 social so I got juno deployed with packstack, there is bunch of stuff to fix but mostly on our side so it's good. But puppet-keystone creates _member_ role which does work on icehouse/havana but not on juno.
07:23 social the reason is that while on icehouse or havana it gets created with correct member_role_id, on juno it gets random id
07:24 social and when someone tries to create user after that keystone checks for member_role_id and tries to add it and fails with duplicate entry error as _member_ already exists

08:05 EmilienM michchap: I'm reviewing https://review.openstack.org/#/c/114499/
08:05 EmilienM it mays me think it's a backport so the code has been merged in master already I guess. It's an error to set /bin/false as default shell for nova
08:06 EmilienM it breaks live migration because nova does "ssh" and "scp" with libvirt api.
08:08 michchap EmilienM: where is the original review?
08:08 EmilienM michchap: let me find it
08:09 derekh joined #puppet-openstack

08:10 EmilienM larsks did it
08:11 michchap https://review.openstack.org/#/c/89620/
08:12 michchap EmilienM: so what should nova_shell default to? /bin/bash?
08:12 michchap EmilienM: is this different depending on whether live migration or block migration is used?
08:13 EmilienM michchap: https://review.openstack.org/#/c/89620/
08:13 EmilienM oops yes
08:13 EmilienM michchap: /bin/bash
08:13 michchap EmilienM: another thing I'm wondering is that for people who do not need live migrate maybe they want /bin/false for security reasons?
08:14 EmilienM michchap: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1122457
08:14 EmilienM michchap: yeah, but TBH who don't need that...?
08:15 EmilienM I'm gonna change the default...
08:15 michchap EmilienM: people who exclusively run apps that can handle node failure
08:15 michchap EmilienM: my dream customer!
08:16 EmilienM michchap: what do you think if I change the default?
08:18 michchap EmilienM: Do we have a live_migrate flag or something? /bin/false is wrong if the user wants live migration, so we could change the value to /bin/bash only when live_migrate is enabled.
08:19 michchap EmilienM: I'm also not sure why this is in nova instead of nova::compute
08:19 EmilienM michchap: mh yeah we have... but I have to find a way to keep the possibility to disable it even if live_migrate is enabled.
08:19 openstackgerrit Can ZHANG proposed a change to stackforge/puppet-nova: Add User[nova] definitions to stable/havana  https://review.openstack.org/114499
08:19 michchap EmilienM: in fact this is even more specific in that it only applies to nova::compute::libvirt
08:20 michchap EmilienM: other hypervisors don't need this at all do they? and scheduler/api/conductor don't need the keys
08:22 EmilienM yeah
08:22 EmilienM michchap: anyway... I still think that managing users and groups in puppet is a big error
08:22 EmilienM it's up to packaging
08:23 michchap EmilienM: you do it via edeploy. redhat does it in packages with a hardcoded number. debian doesn'
08:23 michchap EmilienM: doesn't manage the numbers but does create them.
08:23 EmilienM michchap: we do it in eDeploy ok, but most of people use packaging.
08:24 michchap EmilienM: the bottom line is that without consensus between all users of the modules we can't stop managing them I don't think.
08:24 michchap EmilienM: but I can certainly see why the redhat folks were vocally against doing so.
08:24 EmilienM michchap: ok. But /bin/false is quite disturbing for our users. They could debug live migration for a while before realizing our module just DISABLE it.
08:25 openstackgerrit Can ZHANG proposed a change to stackforge/puppet-nova: Add User[nova] definitions to stable/havana  https://review.openstack.org/114499
08:26 michchap EmilienM: right. perhaps a good topic for the meeting?
08:28 EmilienM michchap: mhh I'm gonna shoot an email to the ML before
08:28 EmilienM michchap: or useless?
08:29 michchap EmilienM: I want to understand why larsks set it to false in the first place. Maybe he had a good reason.
08:29 michchap EmilienM: so maybe email him directly if he doesn't check the ML, or sent to the ML if he does check it.
08:30 EmilienM michchap: which is controverting the RH ticket
08:30 michchap EmilienM: maybe make  a comment on the ticket?

11:34 tfz hi out there is anyone familiar with the puppet-ceph module and can tell me how I have to specify an osd with a disk partition (eg. /dev/sdb3) ?
11:52 openstackgerrit sajuptpm proposed a change to stackforge/puppet-heat: added option to configure flavor in heat.conf  https://review.openstack.org/104795
12:05 saju_m joined #puppet-openstack
12:31 EmilienM tfz: you should check with dachary
12:32 dachary tfz: did you try doing just this ? I mean specifying /dev/sdb3
12:32 dachary EmilienM: bonjour :-)
12:33 EmilienM dachary: good afternoon!
12:37 rmoe joined #puppet-openstack
12:44 tfz dachary: yes I tried with /dev/sdb3 It works for the first puppet run, but fails in the second run.
12:44 dachary oh
12:45 EmilienM not idempotent?
12:45 dachary it means the check for existence is bugous
12:45 tfz dachary, but I think I'm on the good trac now, GPT, so this is probably the problem.
12:45 dachary tfz: how do you mean ?
12:45 dachary you were not using GPT ?
12:45 tfz s/GPT/ the partitrion is not on GPT but MBR
12:46 dachary ah, that certainly is an issue for ceph because it pretty much relies on GPT for everything
12:46 dachary there should be a nice warning about that ...
12:46 tfz well it worked before the update of puppet-ceph....
12:47 tfz well I need to look how i can change partition scheme  now.

13:20 EmilienM larsks: how do you specify for not using ssh in live migration?
13:23 larsks EmilienM: I believe by using a live_migration_uri that does not include ssh (such as "qemu+tcp://"), unless nova is doing something behind the scenes of which I am not aware.
13:23 larsks EmilienM: If nova requires ssh access on it's own, then maybe I would change my mind.
13:24 larsks EmilienM: ...although I'm still not convinced that having a valid shell should be the default, because that's unusual for "service" accounts.

13:58 larsks michchap: I believe libvirt supports ssl/tls.
13:59 larsks michchap: http://libvirt.org/remote.html
14:00 michchap larsks: is that configured in packstack somewhere?
14:01 larsks michchap: Nope.  I imagine packstack, as a PoC/testing tool, will probably only ever support ssh.  But other tools for production deployments will probably use the tcp+tls option.
14:01 larsks michchap: ...I don't know that for certain, though.
14:03 michchap larsks: understood. thanks.

14:14 spredzy wanted skype or hg ?
14:15 michchap let's go hg
14:15 Mosibi tfz: we also noticed problems with puppet-ceph and partitions. I wrote a basic shell script/wrapper to handle disks and partitions which i planned to submit this week.
14:16 Mosibi tfz: what is your status with this? Do you have something that works with partitions?
14:17 tfz Mosibi: not yet.
14:17 tfz I thought I have to switch to GPT to make it running.
14:18 tfz but I still investigate how it's best done in our debian / wheezy environment.
14:18 daneyon joined #puppet-openstack
14:18 Mosibi tfz: switching to GPT, or the ceph/partition part?
14:19 Mosibi tfz: my (not fully tested) script. http://pastebin.com/1T7scwNb
14:20 tfz Mosibi: well my setup is: /dev/sda and /dev/sdb on the hardware. having first partition on software raid for rootfs, second for swap and third partitions should go for osd's.
14:21 tfz so I think I have to reinstall machines with GPT instead of MBR, then I expect to have a running (or walking, since own disks would be the better choice ;)) system

14:56 crinkle_ morning everyone
14:56 tfz Mosibi thanks for confirmation
14:57 crinkle hogepodge is in San Antonio today so he asked me to lead today's meeting
14:58 michchap morning crinkle
14:58 crinkle morning michchap
15:00 crinkle meeting agenda is here: https://etherpad.openstack.org/p/puppet-openstack-agenda
15:01 xarses hi
15:02 crinkle first item is that hogepodge is leaving Puppet Labs and we need to transition someone else into his role in puppet-openstack
15:03 sbadia hi
15:03 crinkle that person needs to submit a design summit proposal, lead Monday meetings, and be in charge of module release
15:04 crinkle I'm not sure what the process is for selecting a new Chris so maybe someone can suggest a process?
15:04 EmilienM hola
15:04 crinkle hello o/
15:04 michchap crinkle: everything is ad-hoc. for module releases I think that's probably going to need to be someone from PL.
15:05 arnaud_orange joined #puppet-openstack
15:05 michchap crinkle: for the other two, how about we start with who would like to do those things.
15:06 crinkle michchap: sounds good to me
15:06 pradk joined #puppet-openstack
15:06 michchap crinkle: I mentioned to Chris before the last summit that while I was happy to moderate the Puppet sessions at the summit, I do think it's preferable to have someone from PuppetLabs so it so that we don't give the impression that this is predominantly a single vendor effort.
15:09 michchap crinkle: I think a message to the ML with exactly what's needed will suffice in this case.
15:11 crinkle michchap: with regard to the design summit?
15:12 crinkle or the whole transition?
15:13 EmilienM michchap: it was good to have Hunner close to us I would say to be honest
15:13 michchap crinkle: the whole thing I think. I'm not sure what Chris has in mind for releases, and the other two will reach a wider audience that may want to get involved.
15:14 crinkle okay, I will send something out
15:14 michchap crinkle: thanks.
15:14 michchap EmilienM: yeah. crinkle how involved is hunner going to be moving forward?
15:14 michchap crinkle: like would hunner be OK to take the module release process over?
15:15 EmilienM michchap: in my opinion, everything could be ad-hoc except the release in puppetlabs itself. Something that someone from Puppetlabs should take care IMHO
15:15 sbadia EmilienM: +1
15:15 crinkle michchap: I am not sure what Hunner's plans are, we can certainly ask him
15:15 michchap EmilienM: yeah I agree, although we should probably agree on someone to run the meetings.
15:15 EmilienM michchap: though sbadia would be happy to take care of stackforge releases and the process around. I know mgagne_ is already doing this sometimes
15:16 sbadia except if we switch to Stackforge namespace for release
15:16 EmilienM indeed
15:16 michchap EmilienM: plenty of us will be at the summit, we just need to make sure one of us submits a proposal.
15:16 crinkle Chris would like to transition the modules to being released under the stackforge namespace, so I don't know if it's strictly necessary to have puppet labs be in charge of that once that transition takes place
15:16 michchap crinkle: ok, but still using semver?
15:17 crinkle I assume so
15:17 michchap crinkle: maybe Chris needs to send an email with what he has in mind
15:17 EmilienM crinkle: then it's ok, someone of us can take care of it.
15:17 EmilienM any volunteer?
15:17 michchap EmilienM: most of us consume directly from git
15:17 sbadia EmilienM: we can maybe discuss this with more people on the ML ;)
15:17 EmilienM that should start by an email from chris
15:18 sbadia yup
15:18 EmilienM to be sure we are agree on this new process
15:18 michchap right. we could make a CI job that does releases automatically maybe?
15:18 crinkle I will coordinate with Chris to get an email thread started
15:18 michchap thanks crinkle
15:18 EmilienM michchap: I have to disagree, release management should not been automatic
15:19 michchap EmilienM: when we switch the branches over it's manual, but we trigger a release?
15:19 michchap EmilienM: like when master becomes stable/juno and
15:19 EmilienM in OpenStack, it's done by ttx, manually.
15:19 michchap EmilienM: or is that not appropriate.
15:19 michchap I think we can discuss this on the ML
15:20 EmilienM also
15:21 EmilienM can we go ahead?
15:22 sbadia yep
15:22 michchap yep
15:22 EmilienM crinkle: ?
15:22 crinkle yes
15:22 crinkle next item is that the gate is still broken
15:22 crinkle there are two suggestions for fixing it, https://review.openstack.org/#/c/115994/ and https://review.openstack.org/116169
15:23 EmilienM we only got +1... which is not enough
15:23 EmilienM we should ping infra, I'm taking this.
15:23 crinkle 116169 is not a duplicate, it is a different strategy for fixing it
15:24 EmilienM crinkle: how come?
15:25 EmilienM we should not abandon gating on trusty.
15:25 sbadia yep, indeed, but anyway we should ping infra to go ahead
15:25 crinkle EmilienM: 116169 moves the tests back to precise, which avoids the problem that ruby 1.9.1 is not supported by puppet 2.7 https://docs.puppetlabs.com/guides/platforms.html#ruby-versions
15:25 crinkle my understanding was that we were still intending to use 1.8.7 until kilo
15:26 EmilienM I did it 1 min ago
15:26 xarses seperate test's then?
15:27 xarses run them on seperate boxes, containers?
15:28 michchap when was the 2.7 deprecation decided to be kilo?
15:28 michchap during a meeting I missed?
15:28 xarses We discussed in Atlanta, and nearly every time its come up since
15:29 michchap oh. so it's just my memory is terrible :D
15:29 xarses though i thought deprication was j and removal was k. not removal in l
15:29 crinkle I am not sure
15:32 mmaglana joined #puppet-openstack
15:33 crinkle it looks like 115994 is about to be merged, so we see if that fixes it and propose another strategy if it doesn't
15:33 crinkle shall we move on to the next item?
15:34 michchap sure
15:34 crinkle I am not sure of the background on this, but the next item is the deprecation of all user and group management in modules
15:35 crinkle it seems that there is a ceilometer bug that Chris was trying to fixed before he realized the gate was broken
15:35 crinkle https://bugs.launchpad.net/puppet-ceilometer/+bug/1350980 https://review.openstack.org/#/c/115828/
15:35 crinkle probably the first patch set there is the one to discuss if there needs to be any discussion
15:36 mmaglana_ joined #puppet-openstack
15:37 michchap I experience that issue as well. Patch looks ok
15:40 crinkle are there other modules managing users and groups that should be modified?
15:40 sputnik13 joined #puppet-openstack
15:42 crinkle okay, I don't have any other comments on that item
15:42 EmilienM ok, https://review.openstack.org/#/c/115994/ is in gate and merged in a few time.
15:42 michchap I think we're good
15:42 sbadia \o/
15:42 EmilienM hopefully we have puppet gate fixed soon
15:42 crinkle excellent, thanks EmilienM
15:44 crinkle with regard to Chris leaving, I am not sure what Hunner's desired level of involvement is or whether Puppet Labs can afford to move him to working on openstack full time, but I will continue to be involved and can represent Puppet Labs when needed
15:44 crinkle but we can continue that discussion on the mailing list
15:44 crinkle are there any other topics to discuss?
15:45 sbadia ok for me :)
