14:47 hogepodge Hi EmilienM
14:47 hogepodge I've been working with Trove a bit. Kind of in a rough state.
14:48 hogepodge I'm not sure how to handle the packaging and config bits, want to take a look at what I've done and offer suggestions? Maybe sbadia can look too.
14:51 crinkle morning
14:51 crinkle I didn't prepare an agenda for today
14:52 crinkle are there topics people would like to discuss?
14:52 crinkle sbadia: ^
14:55 EmilienM hogepodge: ok, I'll
14:55 mdorman i was going to bring up starting to add non-voting gate testing for puppet 3.7 w/ future parser
14:55 crinkle let me start an etherpad
14:56 crinkle https://etherpad.openstack.org/p/puppet-openstack-agenda-10.6.2014
14:57 qba73 joined #puppet-openstack
15:00 crinkle anything else to add to the agenda?
15:01 hogepodge Release planning and testing?
15:03 crinkle okay
15:03 crinkle #startmeeting
15:03 crinkle #topic Testing with Puppet 3.7 with future parser
15:04 mdorman on that, i really just wanted to find out if everyone was generally in favor of doing this.  if so, then i’ll start gradually submitting some reviews for adding it in to the various modules.
15:04 crinkle mdorman: Currently we're testing only up to puppet 3.4. I would propose that we add a 3.7 voting job and then a 3.7 + future parser nonvoting job
15:04 mdorman yeah that sounds good.
15:04 crinkle I am +1
15:04 crinkle not sure how many are here, might be a mailing list discussion
15:04 crinkle but I don't see why not
15:05 mdorman ok, i can send out a follow up there.
15:06 sbadia hi (sorry for the delay…)
15:06 crinkle sbadia: hello
15:06 sbadia yep +1 also for 3.7 and 3.7+ non voting
15:06 hogepodge In moving forward with 3.7, it seems like 2.7 should be changed to non-voting too. It's a pain to support in a meaningful way, and ubuntu and rhel are leaving it behind anyway.
15:06 crinkle I don't think 2.7 should be nonvoting, I think we should make a conscious decision to either remove it or keep it
15:06 mdorman agreed with that, too.
15:07 crinkle I don't think making it nonvoting really gets us anything
15:07 crinkle but it is EOL so I would vote it be removed
15:08 sbadia yes, and trusty include 3.4.x (and the next version of debian 3.7.x)
15:08 mdorman non-voting, or removed, i don’t really have a preference.
15:10 crinkle hogepodge: do you have strong feelings about making 2.7 nonvoting vs removing it?
15:11 hogepodge I don't have a preference. I was for trying to support it for longer, but now don't think that makes sense.
15:12 mdorman i say we propose removing it.  i’ll send something out to the ML, and then if there is disagreement we can discuss more
15:12 hogepodge Is 3.7 going to be using the future parser?
15:12 hogepodge oh, just read that above. sry.
15:13 crinkle #action mdorman will send a proposal to the mailing list to a) add 3.7 voting job, b) add 3.7 + future parser nonvoting job, and c) remove 2.7 from jobs
15:14 berendt joined #puppet-openstack
15:14 crinkle next topic?
15:15 sbadia yup
15:15 crinkle #topic Release planning and testing
15:15 crinkle hogepodge:
15:16 hogepodge I wanted to get a sense of who was doing integration testing and where they were. I started manually deploying a couple weeks ago and have been testing the Juno packing from RDO.
15:16 crinkle nibalizer has started introducing beaker tests
15:16 hogepodge Mostly things are working well with a few hiccups.
15:17 crinkle unfortunately I don't think he usually attends these meetings
15:17 ericpeterson joined #puppet-openstack
15:18 hogepodge Of all the projects Trove needs the most work for release, as it doesn't have a complete configuration and the parent project has a few bugs.
15:18 hogepodge It would be nice to have it in shape for a release since it is "integrated" https://www.openstack.org/software/roadmap/
15:19 sbadia indeed about trove
15:19 hogepodge Also, the namespaces need to be changed if things are going to puppetforge.com/stackforge
15:19 sbadia we still have a lot of packaging issues
15:20 hogepodge trove even has docomentation problems. Lots of places where the word 'neutron' is used. :-)
15:21 * sbadia whistle :)
15:21 hogepodge Anyway, just wanted to put that on people's radar. Overall I think that the modules themselves are in good shape and have tracked the Juno cycle well.
15:22 crinkle hogepodge: should we make bug reports or something to that effect in order to track these trove issues?
15:23 hogepodge crinkle, yes. I've been kind of tracking them in my juno-integrated branch, but I'll be making reports once I feel like I have a handle on what needs to change.
15:23 hogepodge I'll also work with sbadia and EmilienM since they seem to know the most about the module.
15:23 crinkle hogepodge: okay
15:24 crinkle #action hogepodge will make bug reports and work with EmilienM and sbadia on getting trove ready for Juno release
15:25 ericpeterson joined #puppet-openstack
15:25 crinkle what else do we need to do to get these modules ready?
15:25 hogepodge dependency testing and updating.
15:26 hogepodge (making sure pmt actually converges on a solution in a reasonable time) :-)
15:26 crinkle that will be on my roadmap
15:28 crinkle anything else on that topic?
15:30 crinkle #topic Actions from the previous meeting update
15:30 crinkle sbadia:
15:31 sbadia yep :)
15:31 sbadia about puppet-swift
15:32 sbadia i'v bisected on fixtures but nothing :/
15:32 sbadia and i can't reproduce the issue on my local env
15:33 sbadia so anyway, the patch fixes the issue
15:33 crinkle it looks like 126171 makes it happy
15:33 sbadia yep (but it's strange…)
15:33 crinkle I'm not sure what your note about ensure_resources means, could you explain?
15:34 sbadia I thought that the defined class was in cause, but not
15:35 sbadia and about metadata, patchs are ready (I think)
15:36 crinkle I can look at those soon
15:36 sbadia thanks
15:38 cjellick joined #puppet-openstack
15:38 crinkle anything else to discuss?
15:38 sbadia nothing for me
15:38 EmilienM dummy question I havae
15:39 xingchao joined #puppet-openstack
15:39 EmilienM do we have a room for the summit? It's a bit unclear for me
15:39 crinkle hogepodge: ^
15:39 EmilienM also do we have sessions or any agenda?
15:39 crinkle They are going to be scheduling us soon I think
15:39 EmilienM maybe I missed something
15:39 crinkle we proposed a rough agenda
15:40 crinkle I think maybe next week I will bring up making a more firm agenda
15:41 mdorman i put a note on the etherpad for operators’ track ideas.  but i wasn’t sure if ‘puppet’ belonged there
15:42 crinkle mdorman: link?
15:42 xarses joined #puppet-openstack
15:43 crinkle we already have our own session, I'm not sure we need a track, but I'm also not clear on how these things work
15:44 mdorman one sec
15:45 mdorman https://etherpad.openstack.org/p/PAR-ops-meetup
15:45 mdorman at the very bottom
15:45 mdorman i really only put it there so it would get some visibility if it wasn’t being covered through some other avenue
15:46 mdorman so if we already have a puppet session, then it probably doens’t need to be in this ops doc
15:46 crinkle I believe we have a session but hogepodge knows the details
15:51 crinkle anything else? hogepodge will probably come back at some point and confirm things for us
15:51 hogepodge crinkle, I'm not sure what the status of the ops meetup is
15:51 hogepodge You have space for a 90 minute session, I'm still working out the scheduling details
15:51 hogepodge (90 minute developer session that is)
15:52 crinkle EmilienM: ^
15:52 daneyon joined #puppet-openstack
15:52 hogepodge You should be on the openstack-operators mailing list and communicate them about an operators session. I think it's important, and was well attended last summit.
15:53 crinkle it looks like there will be multiple operators sessions from this doc
15:54 crinkle mdorman: okay cool, I like the puppet users session under the operators' umbrella idea
15:55 cjellick joined #puppet-openstack
15:55 crinkle I think it's time to finish up
15:55 mdorman yeah that doc is basically just a dumping ground for peoples ops sessions ideas.  then from that they’ll determine what the schedule will actually be.
15:56 crinkle I'll monitor openstack-operators@ for news on this

16:04 mgagne crinkle: looks like the test failed with the same error as mine on my local setup: https://review.openstack.org/#/c/123276/
16:04 mgagne crinkle: system version of facter is conflicting with the one installed by bundler through gems
16:05 cjellick joined #puppet-openstack
16:06 dgurtner joined #puppet-openstack
16:07 crinkle mgagne: I think sbadia just pushed a change to fix that issue, it had something to do with how the rspec tests were laid out, not facter
16:07 mgagne crinkle: link?
16:07 crinkle https://review.openstack.org/126171
16:07 sbadia hum it's mostly a work-arround
16:07 mgagne thanks, *reads*
16:08 crinkle I don't really see how the system facter would conflict with the gem facter, bundle exec rake spec should know which one to use
16:08 mgagne crinkle: looks like it's not the case
16:10 mgagne crinkle: I'm getting logs from facter from the system version (not the gem) when running my spec tests
16:10 mgagne crinkle: so this leads me to think they are conflicting in some way
16:10 crinkle mgagne: do you run them with bundle exec?
16:10 mgagne crinkle: of course
16:10 crinkle hmm :/
16:10 mgagne everything is wrapper in bundler
16:11 mgagne what's weird is that I can't reproduce this issue on my mac although I also have facter installed system-wide
16:11 mgagne so this make me think that facter has to be installed from a non-gem source to cause this kind of conflict
16:12 mgagne will try something: uninstall facter/puppet from MY jenkins slaves and see if I get the same error (because I do have the same problem)
16:12 daneyon joined #puppet-openstack

16:15 hogepodge EmilienM and sbadia, and any other rhel folks, want to check my work on this one? https://review.openstack.org/#/c/126150/
16:15 EmilienM hogepodge: will do
16:15 hogepodge I just want to make sure I didn't miss anything with packaging.
16:16 EmilienM hogepodge: +2, it's good.
16:16 sbadia yep
16:21 mgagne -> https://review.openstack.org/#/c/126344/
16:24 openstackgerrit A change was merged to stackforge/puppet-neutron: Install package libreswan in RHEL 7 systems for vpnaas  https://review.openstack.org/126150
16:28 EmilienM mgagne: nice catch
16:28 mgagne EmilienM: the sad part is that I can't apply the same fix on my setup, my slaves are not ephemeral :-/
16:29 crinkle mgagne: I can't reproduce your issue
16:29 crinkle and since our gate isn't broken I'm not sure what the gain is
16:29 mgagne crinkle: then why is sbadia tweaking the rspec tests to make them pass again?
16:30 crinkle mgagne: swift was the only one that was broken, if facter conflicts were a problem then everything would be broken
16:30 mgagne crinkle: nope
16:30 mgagne crinkle: not every tests trigger the problem
16:32 crinkle hrm okay
16:33 mgagne I could try to setup a test project to reproduce the problem
16:35 crinkle we could do a lot of work trying to reproduce the issue (since conflicts between the system package and gem really shouldn't happen) but if uninstalling facter fixes our immediate problem then I'm fine with leaving it at that

16:44 rwsu joined #puppet-openstack
16:45 mgagne crinkle: see lines 63-67 of output. Why the hell is the system version of facter outputting logs?
16:45 xingchao joined #puppet-openstack
16:52 crinkle mgagne: weird :(
16:57 crinkle mgagne: I found this https://groups.google.com/forum/#!msg/puppet-users/B--ZMBj5zMQ/t83tJGWMdJAJ
16:57 mgagne crinkle: yep, found it too (and other similar answers)
16:58 mgagne crinkle: that's why I strongly suspect the system version of facter to conflict
16:59 crinkle does bundler install facter 2 or facter 1.7? the ml answers seem to indicate that the errors get spit out by 1.7
17:00 mgagne crinkle: you can see the list of installed gems and versions in my output: http://paste.openstack.org/show/119046/
17:00 mgagne crinkle: facter 1.7.6
17:01 crinkle mgagne: so then that answer seems to indicate that the 1.7 version is causing the errors
17:02 mgagne crinkle: is 1.7 on rubygems completely broken and unsable?
17:02 mgagne crinkle: why does uninstalling 2.x (which should NOT be used during tests) fix the problem?
17:02 crinkle mgagne: I have no idea
17:03 crinkle it is a very strange problem
17:04 mgagne crinkle: I spent close to a whole day debugging it last week. I ended up ignoring the problematic tests on my setup due to the fact I can't uninstall the system facter.
17:05 crinkle mgagne: I'm not saying your proposal doesn't fix the issue, I'm just trying to understand why
17:06 crinkle mgagne: your efforts are appreciated
17:06 mgagne crinkle: I don't have any workaround to propose other than uninstalling facter. We already had issue with the system puppet in the past and had to uninstall it too.
17:09 mgagne I suspect that facter or something else might do system calls which aren't wrapped in bundler and therefore loading system gems instead
17:13 crinkle mgagne: iirc uninstalling puppet didn't fix the issue back then, the gate was broken until we decided to run 2.7 jobs on precise because of the issue with ruby version https://review.openstack.org/#/c/116915/
17:13 mgagne crinkle: I forgot to uninstall puppet-common
17:14 mgagne crinkle: we (1) pinned to precise, (2) uninstall puppet and then (3) puppet-common
17:15 crinkle mgagne: ah okay
17:15 mgagne crinkle: (2) https://review.openstack.org/#/c/115994/ and (3) https://review.openstack.org/#/c/117044/
17:28 hogepodge sbadia you can see some of my trove workarounds here https://github.com/hogepodge/puppetlabs-openstack/blob/juno-integrated/manifests/profile/trove.pp
17:29 hogepodge the paste provider configures the file in /etc/trove, but the skeleton (which has loads of necessary data) is in /usr/share/trove, so it should somehow be copied first or linked.
17:30 hogepodge That's not captured in my manifest. I'm not entirely sure of the best way to handle it. Also, there's a bug in Trove proper where if you give it a keystone endpoint it's supposed to configure the rest of the services automatically, but Trove demands that you point it to a nova endpoint or it will give an empty catalog error.
17:31 hogepodge One thing I don't like about Trove proper is it requires you make the message queue a public API so that the guest OSes can find it.

17:51 nibalizer crinkle: i proposed https://review.openstack.org/#/c/126264/ last night
17:52 nibalizer which is getting heavily downvoted but i'll try to fix that
17:52 crinkle mdorman: ^
17:54 mdorman cool.  nice, yeah pretty much exactly what i was thinking
17:56 mdorman and, agree, not sure how to actually make the future parser tests work

18:43 nibalizer mdorman: yea i dont think future parser tests work at all, like rspec-puppet isn't really ready for it yet
18:44 nibalizer we could do beaker tests when we get those in place though

19:32 ibravo do you know where I can obtain information on how to deploy a nova node using puppet and The Foreman?
19:34 simonc_ joined #puppet-openstack
19:34 rharrison ibravo, I'd start with the documentation at http://theforeman.org/ that'll tell you how foreman likes to work with puppet modules in general.  Then you pull in the OpenStack modules developed by the guys in this channel and use the Foreman interface to provide the correct parameter values to the classes for your hosts.
19:35 rharrison ibravo, correct values for how you'd like your environment set up that is.
19:36 ibravo rharrison: I'm already familiar with The Foreman and how it manages puppet modules. I'm looking for a bit more 'sause' on a live example or walkthrough for the modules themselves. I found that there are quite a few in the modules/nova, and looking to understand which ones need to be configured and which are nice to have.
19:37 rharrison ibravo, then you're looking for more general docs on why modules you need and which parameters will be important to you I take it?
19:37 rharrison s/why/what/
19:38 ibravo exactly!
19:38 ibravo a past example or walkthrouhg would be great.
19:41 rharrison ibravo, given the complexity of everything OpenStack manages I suspect any "howto" or "walk through" docs will give you a very generic install that really won't be useful for your environment.  Probably fine for a proof of concept but everyone is after all a "special snowflake". :-) I'd look for just the generic "deploying OpenStack with puppet" type stuff and use your existing knowledge of Foreman to translate which class
19:41 rharrison es to call and parameters to change to the Foreman/ENC work flow.
19:44 ibravo yes, we are all looking for the special pixie dust.... ;-)   I guess it is back to the docs then.

20:11 mschmitt hi all. i'm getting an error when trying to initialize the controller node, using the mutlinode exmaple from https://github.com/puppetlabs/puppetlabs-openstack - Could not find resource 'Exec[neutron-db-sync]' for relationship from 'Class[Neutron::Db::Mysql]'
20:11 mschmitt trying to track down what i'm missing in my config

20:18 crinkle mschmitt: I'm going through issues on that module now, if you createa a github issue for puppetlabs-openstack I will look at it
20:18 mschmitt will do
