10:43 dgurtner EmilienM: o/
10:43 EmilienM dgurtner: \o
10:44 dgurtner EmilienM: I was  wondering what's the status on your EL7 support patch
10:45 dgurtner EmilienM: it seems like an issue with epel packaging afaik?
10:45 EmilienM dgurtner: staled now - I should figure out packaging issues between EPEL & ceph.com repos
10:45 dgurtner EmilienM: is this something ceph package maintainer are working on / should be working on?
10:47 EmilienM dgurtner: I think so
10:47 EmilienM you can easily reproduce
10:48 dgurtner but are they aware? i.e. is there an open bug or should we open one?
10:49 * dgurtner goes and looks up whos maintaining the epel package
11:03 EmilienM dgurtner: I did not spend time on it yet, I'm blocked to other things
11:05 dgurtner EmilienM: same here, just was interested on the current status
11:10 openstackgerrit Ivan Berezovskiy proposed stackforge/puppet-ceilometer: Add support for ceilometer-polling agent  https://review.openstack.org/150003
11:15 ccard joined #puppet-openstack
11:16 EmilienM dgurtner: (adding spredzy in the loop) - I think we would use only ceph.com or only EPEL on EL7
11:16 EmilienM but not both together. There are conflicts
11:16 EmilienM so what I would suggest:
11:17 EmilienM * see which repo we should use for ceph on EL7 (EPEL ? ceph.com ?)
11:17 EmilienM * see the conflicts between both and report the bugs to maintainers
11:17 EmilienM * patch puppet-ceph for EL7 support by choosing one of both repos, while it's fixed in packaging
11:18 markvoelker joined #puppet-openstack
11:19 dgurtner EmilienM: i just found https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1183097
11:19 EmilienM nice catch
11:19 EmilienM spredzy: ^
11:20 * spredzy looking
11:20 dgurtner has a lengthy discussion and seems to be the reason why our approach is currently broken
11:21 dgurtner maybe best to talk directly to boris ranto
11:21 EmilienM dgurtner: I would +1 using 100% EPEL
11:22 dgurtner EmilienM: question is can we support multiple/older versions with that approach
11:22 EmilienM I don't think so
11:22 EmilienM olders should use ceph.com repo
11:22 EmilienM but from EL7, we should use EPEL
11:22 EmilienM in my case, I use EPEL on CentOS/Fedora and ICE on RHEL.
11:22 dgurtner issue is that you need "some" packages from epel, even if not the ceph ones, and that's not possible at the moment
11:23 dgurtner ok, need to leave for an hour
11:24 EmilienM dgurtner: ?
11:24 EmilienM dgurtner: I think you can use 100% EPEL no?
11:24 dgurtner EmilienM: yes
11:24 EmilienM dgurtner: ttyl
11:24 dgurtner EmilienM: but you can't use ceph.com without epel
11:24 EmilienM dgurtner: from EL7, I would use EPEL only
11:25 EmilienM and drop ceph.com
11:25 dgurtner EmilienM: which implies dropping support for older versions
11:25 EmilienM dgurtner: no
11:25 EmilienM dgurtner: thanks to facter
11:25 EmilienM you can have puppet conditions depending on the os version
11:25 EmilienM like I did in my patch
11:25 dgurtner ok, need to be more specific:
11:26 EmilienM maybe I'm wrong
11:26 dgurtner it means dropping support of older versions in el7
11:26 dgurtner while still supporting them on el6/precise/trusty
11:26 EmilienM dgurtner: yes
11:27 dgurtner fine with me, but we'll have to ask dachary xarses and dmsimard at least.
11:27 dgurtner also might make sense to talk to boris in any case
11:27 dgurtner ok, gotta run
11:27 dgurtner ttyl
11:27 EmilienM sure thing
11:28 EmilienM I don't want to break something!
11:30 dachary EmilienM: does that mean not being able to install firefly on el7 ?
11:31 EmilienM dachary: probably?
11:31 dachary there are are least two long term support stable releases available at any point in time (currently dumpling and firefly, soon firefly and hammer etc.)
11:33 dachary it is very likely that someone trying to use puppet-ceph will want a release older than what is in el7 since el7 will have the last stable release and the user will want the last lts, most of the time
11:34 dachary I guess there should be package versioning (same way docker does) so that multiple packages can coexist within the same distribution. That's not going to happen soon though because it's significant work.
11:34 dachary like ceph-dumpling, ceph-firefly etc.
11:35 dachary I won't oppose whatever is more convenient to get things moving, just highlighting the problems it creates ;-)
11:35 EmilienM sounds tricky :)
11:36 dachary yeah, it's way more convenient to just rely on ceph.com for packages, that's probably why the situation did not change much in the past years ;-)
11:37 spredzy emccormick, dachary unfortunately EPEL doesn't keep older package version as it does happen on some repo http://pastebin.com/NUSW4phy
11:37 spredzy so yes relying only on EPEL will def. means support only for a single version.
11:38 spredzy A possible solution would be to get in touch with EPEL maintener and see if they can keep the two 'long term support' version at least
11:38 spredzy EmilienM, ^
11:39 spredzy On my paste bin, I meant that on some repo it is possible to install older version of packages. But that is not the case for ceph on EPEL. In case it is clearer.
11:39 spredzy httpd being an example
12:04 cdent joined #puppet-openstack
12:06 dgurtner so one solution is to comtinue using ceph.com repos and blacklist all ceph packages from epel
12:06 spredzy dgurtner, can't this be fixed using priorities at the repo level ?
12:07 dgurtner not in this case
12:07 dgurtner we already use lower priority for epel than ceph.com
12:08 dgurtner but there is a rename/split of python-ceph into python-cephfs/python-rbd/... which seems to mess with that
12:08 spredzy ok

13:21 spredzy dgurtner, so should it be added to EmilienM's review ? The exclude part ?
13:21 EmilienM spredzy: yes
13:21 EmilienM spredzy: feel free to override my patch
13:23 dgurtner spredzy: yes.
13:25 dgurtner spredzy: afair you will need to also change spec/system/ceph_repo_spec.rb so it doesn't check for the extras repo under EL7
13:25 dgurtner spredzy: ^ this is unrelated to the EPEL issue, but needed to pass CI
13:28 social anyone with idea how to fix this http://paste.fedoraproject.org/190277/24870892 ?
13:31 spredzy dgurtner, shouldn't I do that on another patchset ?
13:31 spredzy or the purpose is to have the CI back to green with a single patchset ?
13:35 dgurtner spredzy: the CI needs to be back to green, otherwise the patch can't be approved ;)
13:35 dgurtner spredzy: or at least shouldn't :)
13:36 spredzy dgurtner, just to clarify what you said above, you want https://github.com/stackforge/puppet-ceph/blob/master/spec/system/ceph_repo_spec.rb#L200-L206 to be operatingsystemmajrelease == 6 only ?
13:39 dgurtner spredzy: yes, exactly
13:39 dgurtner spredzy: nb, you'll need to extract that fact manually first
13:40 spredzy dgurtner, operatingsystemmajrelease = facter.facts['operatingsystemmajrelease'] wouldn't do it for me ?
13:40 dgurtner spredzy: i would expect so, yes
13:40 spredzy something else to add on top of that to retrieve the fact ?
13:40 dgurtner spredzy: no, that should work
13:41 dachary dgurtner: cool

13:44 EmilienM spredzy: not in live
13:44 EmilienM you have the result by the end
13:44 EmilienM afik
13:45 spredzy EmilienM, ack
13:47 dgurtner spredzy: you can test locally first if you want
13:49 dgurtner spredzy: given you have virtualbox/vagrant installed you could run this: http://paste.openstack.org/show/181899/
13:53 spredzy dgurtner, where will it get the centos 7 box from ? I don't see it in here -> https://github.com/stackforge/puppet-ceph/tree/master/spec/acceptance/nodesets
13:53 derekh joined #puppet-openstack
13:55 spredzy I use vagrant/libvirt, so I need to mutate the box first
13:55 dgurtner spredzy: it's still using rspec-beaker which has boxes configures in .nodeset.yml and .prefabs.yml
13:56 dgurtner spredzy: btw. it seems to gerenally work
13:56 dgurtner spredzy: I say generally because I jsut saw some tests fail (stuff around key injection), let's see how this turns out

15:46 xarses EmilienM: can we not install from ceph.com at all, or only when both ceph.com and epel are active?
15:47 dgurtner xarses: there's been some changes to the ceph in epel so it's become incompatible with ceph.com
15:48 dgurtner xarses: so using only epel works
15:48 dgurtner xarses: but using ceph.com together with epel leads to conflicts
15:48 dgurtner xarses: and using ceph.com without epel doesn't work as you're missing leveldb and some other packages
15:49 xarses hmm
15:49 dgurtner xarses: so spredzy made the current version of the patch which excludes the epel packages creating issues
15:51 dgurtner xarses: ah and just using epel only is not optimal as you can only access a single release
15:51 xarses ya
15:52 xarses looks like epel is calling the python python-rbd and ceph.com is calling it python-ceph
15:54 xarses oh and aparently python-rados too
15:57 dgurtner there is a python-ceph-compat as well and that's why it fails and not even priorities can fix it

16:21 richm social: did you see my comment in the review?
16:22 social richm: ah yes Draft reply hanging there
16:22 social richm: that one does not seem to be parsing output, it's needed only where we parse output
16:25 social EmilienM: https://review.openstack.org/#/c/106144/
16:25 richm social: I have no idea - I don't know what self.command and execute do, nor do I know why the output would be different
16:28 richm social: for the specs to work, some function named "openstack" must be called in Puppet::Provider::Openstack
16:28 richm social: perhaps your fix changes that somehow
16:29 social richm: issue is that command has hardcoded stderr and stdout
16:29 social richm: so https://github.com/puppetlabs/puppet/blob/master/lib/puppet/provider.rb#L260 breaks it for us
16:29 social richm: this approach of fix was sound in /usr/share/ruby/vendor_ruby/puppet/provider/package/zypper.rb
16:30 social richm: or https://github.com/duritong/puppet-sysctl/blob/master/lib/puppet/provider/sysctl_runtime/sysctl_runtime.rb#L16-L21 :)
16:31 richm social: I don't know how it works - the method "openstack" is some sort of "magic" method that maps the method name to a command line program of the same name
16:31 richm social: perhaps there is a puppet/ruby guru here that knows how to make the spec work

17:34 social EmilienM: that can be split into two patches
17:34 EmilienM social: a cherry-pick should be amended

17:38 moshele EmilenM: thanks
17:39 EmilienM moshele: you don't document iscsi_protocol ?
17:39 moshele EmilienM: what do you mean?
17:40 EmilienM moshele: you create a new parameter, but don't add puppet-doc
17:41 EmilienM moshele: look at manifest
17:41 EmilienM all parameters are documented
17:42 EmilienM I know some of them are not, but I was not part of the review. We want 100% coverage for doc

20:30 FredT Anybody known why a deployment of a controller node would fail "midway" on creation of the Rabbitmq_user with the error message: "Error: user_already_exists". Can I only do a "single puppet run"?
20:32 FredT It stopped due no being able to start Rabbitmq, found a workaround by putting a host alias for 127.0.0.1 as the hostname. Then ran a second puppet agent --test.

21:48 social crinkle: any ideas about the keystone thing? is there way to get both stderr and stdout and distinguish between them?
21:49 social crinkle: or ugly idea of creating regexp to search for begining of the CVS output
21:49 crinkle social: I think we might have to go back to having something like a remove_warnings method the way we had before https://github.com/stackforge/puppet-keystone/blob/4.2.0/lib/puppet/provider/keystone.rb#L169-L189
21:49 crinkle which is kind of ugly
21:50 crinkle I'm trying to see if I can come up with something nicer
21:59 richm Is there a way to redirect file descriptors before the call, so that stdout and stderr can be sent to different destinations?
22:05 crinkle I don't think so, because wherever it was going before puppet still directs it to stdout https://github.com/puppetlabs/puppet/blob/master/lib/puppet/util/execution.rb#L188
22:09 social stderr = options[:combine] ? stdout : File.open(null_file, 'w')
22:09 social so stdout or nothing
22:09 social :(
22:09 crinkle right
22:10 social and we won't get 404 or other recoverable issues from openstack client on stdout but on stderr
