13:37 EmilienM dprince, slagle ^
13:37 EmilienM jpena: fyi
13:38 jpena EmilienM: ?? It's fixed with the latest packages :? Or is it due to the Kilo discussion?
13:39 dprince EmilienM: so I think where we may end up is two separate packages (one for API, and one for registry) which get install by the previous openstack-glance package (so as not to break end users)
13:39 dprince EmilienM: so from a puppet-glance prospective I think it is too early to adopt the new split out API and registry packages yet
13:40 EmilienM dprince: ok. Please +2 or -2 the patch

16:09 EmilienM mfisch: re-stableVSmaster -> I'm wondering why exactly you don't run stable branches. Here we manage to upgrade our infras without much troubles, and we use stable branches
16:10 EmilienM to me, master always tracks current OpenStack dev release, I think we should just change our behavior on backports and the problem should be fixed
16:11 mfisch master doesnt even always do a good job of tracking dev
16:11 EmilienM I know
16:11 EmilienM but it's getting better IMHO
16:11 mfisch it doesnt because I have put multiple fixes up for Juno on it
16:12 EmilienM to me, the process is quite simple: patch master, backport wherever we need and problem solved
16:12 EmilienM for the backport process, I'm doing something to automate it
16:12 mfisch except it almost always need to backport everything
16:12 mfisch I have my doubts as to whether we as a community can do it well, we have not yet
16:13 EmilienM not always!
16:13 EmilienM ie: a kilo thing
16:14 EmilienM well, like I'm saying, it will require some behavior changes

16:39 crinkle so a friend pointed out to me that in other projects, master is considered more-or-less stable, in the sense that someone should be able to check out the code and run it (not in the sense that api compatibility would stay stable)
16:40 crinkle and that a possible solution to this issue would be to create a new branch called something like future/kilo that would be the dumping ground for kilo-specific changes, that would get merged into master when packages get released
16:43 crinkle mfisch: clayton EmilienM would that be a possible solution to our issue, or would that make branch management even harder?
16:44 EmilienM since we barely manage stable branches and our behavior is not the first class citizen, I would argue to not have this new model. That would add more complexity while we try to get things simpler.
16:47 mfisch we could also just delay breaking deprecation changes
16:47 mfisch its one thing if a change is 100% required for Kilo to work at all
16:51 crinkle I support that
16:52 EmilienM mfisch: so here is a proposal:
16:52 mfisch I'd also like to be sure people watch -1s and not merge over them
16:52 xingchao joined #puppet-openstack
16:52 mschmitt joined #puppet-openstack
16:54 EmilienM if in K there is a new section for Oslo messaging (RabbitMQ), that deprecate DEFAULT, but still works in Kilo, we don't patch puppet-* / master but we will wait for Kilo release and then patch master & backport. So both Kilo & master will have RabbitMQ working (with old or new sections the feature works)
16:54 EmilienM I'm not sure I'm clear
16:54 aimon__ joined #puppet-openstack
16:55 mfisch yes thats right
16:56 EmilienM that's an idea
16:56 crinkle can we revert the changes that broke things, and resubmit with a -2 until kilo is ready?
16:56 EmilienM the fact is, you'll have deprecation warnings in LOGs
16:56 mfisch people on K will yes
16:56 EmilienM crinkle: go ahead please.
16:56 EmilienM mfisch: AFIK, OPS don't like warnings
16:56 mfisch sorry guys I am not trying to be a pain
16:56 mfisch EmilienM: yes, I dont like deprecations either
16:57 EmilienM so...
16:57 mfisch we can discuss this on Tue
16:57 EmilienM on the other hands people will think we are bringing warnings
16:57 EmilienM mfisch: meetings are short. I would like to use IRC & ML for discussions
16:57 mfisch k
16:58 EmilienM we've seen meetings take too long when it comes to this kind of topic
16:58 mfisch yes
16:59 aimon joined #puppet-openstack
17:01 mfisch I'd like to talk about the deprecation with dorman
17:01 clayton I'd rather have the deprecation warnings on master for some period of time than break things
17:02 clayton I spent some time writing up my thoughts from a few weeks ago on config option management and hope to send something out today, it seems to me that these two issues might be somewhat related
17:04 openstackgerrit Colleen Murphy proposed stackforge/puppet-neutron: Revert "Move rabbit/kombu settings to oslo_messaging_rabbit section"  https://review.openstack.org/174964
17:04 EmilienM clayton: the problem is we have deprecation warnings. But for parameters
17:04 EmilienM here we don't have parameters
17:04 EmilienM it's config sections
17:05 clayton one option might be to enhance the config file providers to allow specifying new and old option names, and then having a flag to pick which one.  Then someone could do something like resource { 'keystone_config': release => 'new' } or release => old
17:05 clayton sure, but from a puppet standpoint they're both part of the resource name
17:05 EmilienM crinkle: +2
17:06 clayton so you could do something like neutron_config { 'NEWSECTION/name': oldname => 'OLDSECTION/name', value => $value }
17:06 clayton which would be easy to clean up when moving between releases
17:06 mfisch (we could also tell developers to stop moving stuff)
17:06 clayton yeah, but we don't have much leverage there
17:10 openstackgerrit Colleen Murphy proposed stackforge/puppet-neutron: Revert "Revert "Move rabbit/kombu settings to oslo_messaging_rabbit section""  https://review.openstack.org/174965
17:10 EmilienM clayton: it would work yes.
17:10 clayton it would be less bloat than conditionals
17:10 EmilienM yeah
17:11 EmilienM I don't like conditionals either
17:11 EmilienM sounds like we have some proposals
17:11 openstackgerrit Colleen Murphy proposed stackforge/puppet-nova: Revert "Move rabbit/kombu settings to oslo_messaging_rabbit section"  https://review.openstack.org/174966
17:11 clayton I was also thinking it might be worthwhile to consider enhancing the config file providers to recognize 'absent' as a special value.  that might also allow us to remove some of the conditionals
17:12 openstackgerrit Colleen Murphy proposed stackforge/puppet-nova: Revert "Revert "Move rabbit/kombu settings to oslo_messaging_rabbit section""  https://review.openstack.org/174967

17:16 crinkle so what to do about a change like https://review.openstack.org/#/c/167226/ which breaks juno users, but is required for kilo users?
17:17 EmilienM crinkle: conditionals...
17:17 EmilienM that's why I don't like this
17:17 EmilienM this is the best example I think
17:19 clayton crinkle: the packages to install can be an array instead of a string
17:20 clayton assuming you're willing to require users to specify if they want juno or kilo
17:24 crinkle this is where having another branch would be useful, instead of having conditionals that will end up stuck there until P, we could just have kilo users cherry-pick from the future branch

18:12 EmilienM dprince: re-tripleO/puppet/CI: do you know if it's possible or not to have the jobs soon?
18:13 dprince EmilienM: yes, my goal is to push a patch this weekend to add the jobs
18:14 EmilienM well, don't work on the week-end it's too sunny for that!
18:14 EmilienM dprince: I just wanted to know if you needed help
18:14 EmilienM and if we have any blocker.
18:14 dprince EmilienM: that too, just been a busy week
18:14 EmilienM dprince: maybe could we start by one or 2 modules?
18:15 EmilienM to have feedback about how it happens
18:15 dprince EmilienM: it would be non-voting only only on modules getting coverage with TripleO
18:15 EmilienM if it's too slow, etc
18:15 dprince EmilienM: the jobs take just over an hour ATM
18:15 EmilienM dprince: I guess you have to patch something to pull our the right commit in tripleo, right?
18:16 dprince EmilienM: I would like to test that but I think we've already got code in place to grab the appropriate refspec and set it up correctly
18:16 dprince EmilienM: puppet-tripleo already works this way
18:16 dprince EmilienM: so essentially the same DIB_ variables should also work for all the modules
18:17 dprince EmilienM: it is all based on the source-repositories element
18:17 EmilienM dprince: ok. I would like to see how it works with puppet-keystone first maybe.
18:17 EmilienM wait one week, and see if we continue the same way or if we need to change something somewhere
18:17 dprince EmilienM: I'm fine w/ that approach
18:17 EmilienM I don't want to impact all modules NOW
18:18 EmilienM I'm doing the same approach with beaker
18:18 EmilienM when I have the job green & stable, I'll push for other modules.
18:18 dprince EmilienM: right, well this is a bit different. I'm already using many of the stackforge/puppet modules from master
18:18 dprince EmilienM: so either it passes (for all of them) or not
18:19 dprince EmilienM: a step at a time is fine, but just harder to push through infra
18:19 EmilienM dprince: I'll manage that part. I can poke them and be that guy, I don't mind :)
18:20 nibalizer EmilienM: uhhhh
18:20 nibalizer EmilienM: so ask that in infra i think
18:28 dprince EmilienM: https://review.openstack.org/174997
18:29 dprince EmilienM: that will run both the nonHA and HA jobs on puppet-keystone
18:29 dprince EmilienM: the nonHA will likely be failing for a bit, maybe we should just start w/ nonHA only?
18:31 dprince EmilienM: yeah, I switch it in patchset 2 to just run nonHA
18:33 dprince EmilienM: so as you can see adding these jobs is really quite easy. The tripleo-ci should just support it I think...
18:35 dfisher quick question about puppet-keystone - is the only supported method of operation to use httpd?  I know it was strongly recommended for Juno, but the old, less awesome eventlet way still works outside of puppet.
18:35 dprince EmilienM: I'd like to send this before too long since we've reverted the openstack-glance split https://review.openstack.org/#/c/174872/
18:35 openstackgerrit Richard Megginson proposed stackforge/puppet-keystone: support for keystone v3 api - the user_role resource  https://review.openstack.org/174999
18:35 EmilienM dprince: nonHA is a good start.
18:36 EmilienM anyone core around could +A https://review.openstack.org/#/c/174872/ ?
18:36 richm dfisher: Yes - eventlet is still supported
18:37 dfisher ok, thanks!
18:40 EmilienM Chef also wants to join the big tent: https://review.openstack.org/#/c/174872/
18:42 clayton nod, figured that was coming based on JJ's comments
18:42 EmilienM yeah
18:42 clayton EmilienM: wrong link
18:43 EmilienM https://review.openstack.org/#/c/175000/
18:43 clayton let's see if they get to use ChefOpenStack :)
18:48 openstackgerrit Merged stackforge/puppet-glance: Revert "Separate api and registry packages for Red Hat"  https://review.openstack.org/174872
18:48 EmilienM clayton: lol
18:48 EmilienM dprince: ^^^^ merged
18:49 dprince EmilienM: cool, thanks
19:04 clayton oh no, Puppies is winning
19:05 clayton at least we'll have an obvious mascot candidate!
19:05 dfisher time for some ballot stuffing!
19:05 * dfisher kidding
19:06 clayton it's winning by a pretty big margin also
19:07 mfisch I can't believe people are voting for Puppies
19:07 mfisch WTH
19:07 mfisch it sounds idiotic
19:08 clayton puppies are adorable.
19:08 clayton and everyone can pronounce it
19:08 tristanC joined #puppet-openstack
19:09 mfisch I work on Puppies
19:09 mfisch great
19:09 EmilienM I'm Puppies PTL
19:09 EmilienM great.
19:09 rhefner can someone give another +2 for this patch? thanks! https://review.openstack.org/#/c/170938/
19:09 dfisher best pick-up line ever though.
19:10 mfisch I hope I voted PUppies last
19:10 mfisch maybe the Chef team is having some fun with us
19:10 clayton Chef team will probably just names theirs ChefOpenStack
19:10 EmilienM rhefner: isn't weird to have '' for some default values ? https://review.openstack.org/#/c/170938/1/manifests/backend/netapp.pp,cm
19:11 clayton yeah, it should have been undef probably.  I already approved though :(
19:11 mfisch I hope I can call the Chef one NyanCats or something
19:12 clayton They shold name it OpenStackFork
19:12 mfisch "Chef: Stick a Fork in it"
19:12 rhefner EmilienM: probably - I can change it up
19:12 EmilienM rhefner: it's okay, it was already there
19:12 clayton EmilienM: I removed my +2 and +1 WF, I'm not sure if that means it'll not merge after the gate jobs run
19:12 EmilienM I just don't like having default to ''
19:13 EmilienM we use undef
19:13 clayton agreed
19:13 rhefner clayton: should I submit another change to that patch to fix that?
19:13 clayton I think you may be able to still revise that existing change
19:13 rhefner clayton: sounds good
19:13 EmilienM Your Collaboration Day application for Puppet has been accepted!
19:13 EmilienM YEAH !!
19:14 EmilienM for the Tuesday
19:14 EmilienM crinkle: ^
19:14 EmilienM we will have a full room for a full day
19:14 crinkle \o/
19:15 EmilienM that's a friday good news
19:17 * mfisch packs his dog for the trip
19:17 richm mfisch: you mean your Puppy
19:18 mfisch that name is just the worst
19:18 mfisch but I dont have to use it!
19:18 clayton unfortunately it's probably what they'll have to put on the summit schedule
19:18 clayton so everyone will wonder why there was no puppet sessions

19:25 openstackgerrit Emilien Macchi proposed stackforge/puppet-glance: Beaker tests  https://review.openstack.org/174659
19:26 EmilienM mfisch: well, we opened an etherpad and someone proposed the name. That's the game I think. Hopefully Puppetlabs will come up and tell us we can use Puppet
19:27 mfisch I can still call it OpenStack Puppet when I talk to people
19:31 EmilienM mfisch: yeah
19:31 EmilienM mfisch: but you could be a Puppy soon :)
19:31 clayton when sending a meail to openstack-dev, I assume mailman adds the [openstack-dev] tag itself?
19:31 clayton I just have to add [puppet] ?
19:31 EmilienM I've got an email about why I opened the vote to everybody
19:32 EmilienM should we close the vote to contributors only?
19:32 clayton well, I think the vote data is useful either way
19:32 clayton the nice thing about cordecet is that it will tell you who would win if you removed puppies
19:35 clayton EmilienM: the faq has some information about avoiding this sort of situation - http://civs.cs.cornell.edu/faq.html#setting_up
19:35 clayton You can setup a line below which people can drag unacceptable choices
19:36 EmilienM I'm going to restart the poll with only contributors can vote
19:36 EmilienM https://wiki.openstack.org/wiki/Election_Officiating_Guidelines#Generate_a_list_of_voters
19:38 clayton I think doing #3 is a good idea also, but I'm still trying to understand how it works in practice
19:39 clayton oh I see, so #3 is what you'd do to run a pre-poll, to narrow the field
19:39 clayton which might be a good idea.  One thing the faq points out is that cordecet is only accurate if you have 3x as many voters as you have choices

19:48 tristanC Hello guys, I'm struggling to make openstack-infra/puppet-jenkins works on a fedora system... my question is: is there a way/hack to make those a2mod directive works on rpm based system or should I try to bump the puppetlabs-apache module to a more recent version ? (currently it is 0.0.4)
19:49 clayton tristanC: I think you want #openstack-infra
19:55 mfisch EmilienM: sorry I didnt get back to you
19:56 mfisch EmilienM: I've not tried openstack client on kilo but looks like perhaps a packaging bug
19:57 tristanC clayton: oh well, I was hoping to come up with a plan before proposing fedora support :)
19:58 clayton tristanC: just pointing out that this channel doesn't have anything to do with the openstack-infra puppet modules :)
19:58 clayton those are owned by the guys in #openstack-infra
19:58 openstackgerrit Emilien Macchi proposed stackforge/puppet-glance: Beaker tests  https://review.openstack.org/174659
20:01 mfisch can someone check my sanity on this syntax?
20:01 mfisch package { $heat_removed_packages:
20:01 mfisch ensure => 'purged',
20:01 mfisch }
20:02 mfisch it shows as "latest" in my catalog!
20:02 clayton I think your yntax is right, I think you have something else going on
20:02 mfisch If I had the packages elsewhere I'd get a catalog compile failure
20:02 EmilienM tristanC: are they using upstream module?
20:03 EmilienM afik they run forks
20:03 clayton yes, the infra team has forked an old version of the apache module
20:04 tristanC afaiu, the system-config setups puppetlabs-apache version 0.0.4. So it's "upstream", but pretty old :)
20:05 tristanC clayton: yes you are right, sorry to bother with this
20:05 clayton np,  just that most of us here would just be guessing :)
20:08 crinkle rhefner: +2'd
