21:24 shortcircuit I've _really_ got to get my home system finished and fixed.
21:25 shortcircuit I don't have enough time available while at work to read through all the 100+ unread entries in the Recent Changes field, and wouldn't have time to respond to something I needed to, even if I did have time to read through them.
21:25 SoniaKeys hi.  mm, i have an incomplete system myself.
21:26 shortcircuit SoniaKeys: I lost most of my OS install while swapping out a drive for RMA. What's your story?
21:27 SoniaKeys i was using a monitor and keyboard that someone else wanted.  i gave it back.  just haven't wanted to spend money on a replacement.
21:29 SoniaKeys but ooo, i have a drive that wouldn't work when i took it out of a system and put it in another.  makes me mad.  i guess it just failed.  :(
21:29 shortcircuit Know the drive brand and model number, off-hand?
21:29 shortcircuit (Or how large it is)
21:30 SoniaKeys no.  it was a 2 1/2 inch laptop drive.
21:30 SoniaKeys (or...2 and whatever those are.)
21:31 shortcircuit Could be a variety of factors. If the drive was too large (in terms of data capacity), the system you were moving it into might not have been able to handle it.
21:31 * shortcircuit tries to remember the stages of disk-capacity compatibility.
21:32 SoniaKeys mm, i tried in an a couple of different systems.
21:33 shortcircuit Was it an IDE drive or a SATA drive? Were you able to try some disk-check utilities on it?
21:33 shortcircuit (Somehow, I find tech support via IRC more interesting than making flow charts in DIA. Go figure.)
21:33 SoniaKeys lol.
21:34 SoniaKeys it was ide.  the laptop would run for a few minutes then die.  in those few quick minutes, the drive seemed to be ok.

21:35 SoniaKeys so i thought i could plug it in a desktop and salvage the data.  but neither desktop i tried would read the drive at all.
21:35 shortcircuit Mm. I had a laptop that behaved like that. Turned out the CPU's heat sink was covered in dust. (Underclocking the system worked for a while. Finally handed it off to a friend who cracked it open and cleaned it out.)
21:36 SoniaKeys good.  i had to pull a graphics card last week because of dust.  unfortunately the fan was gummy even after i cleaned it.
21:37 SoniaKeys it's an old card and probably not worth replacing the fan for.
21:38 SoniaKeys but yeah, while i had the box open, i cleaned the cpu heat sink.  it was clogged solid.  i can't believe it didn't overheat.
21:40 mwn3d_phone On nice days I used to take my tower out on our balcony and dust it.
21:40 mwn3d_phone Canned air is fun to use anyway
21:40 SoniaKeys lol.  like beating a carpet.
21:41 opticron ugh...my dad's was horrific the last time I opened it
21:41 mwn3d_phone But if you do decide to make a flamethrower out of a thing of canned air...make sure you do it outside
21:41 opticron he smokes right next to it all the time
21:41 mwn3d_phone Those fumes are painful
21:41 mwn3d_phone Lol did it have actual ashes in it?
21:42 shortcircuit I used to run a free PC clinic through the local community college. I don't know which I'd qualify as the most disgusting system. The one full of dead cockroaches, the one some child was using to hide anything and everything in, or the one that AdAware found about 4000 pieces of malware on.
21:43 opticron mwn3d_phone, nah, just full of dust and tar

21:44 shortcircuit That last system had so many coppies of Sasser, it would schedule a shutdown-and-reboot-in-30s the instant it got far enough in its boot-up process. Learned a neat trick that day; rescheduling a pending shutdown for a month or so in the future...
21:44 opticron or aborting a shutdown
21:45 shortcircuit opticron: Tried that, but the shutdown was immediately rescheduled, every time, and all running apps would start closing.
21:45 opticron lol
21:46 shortcircuit The poor lady who owned that one broke out into tears when we were able to hand her back her system, booting into her user session just fine, with her data intact. That was a feel-good day. :)

21:54 SoniaKeys Ha.  Just saw the AWK input loop.  a one byte program.  (I'd already seen the shortest quine)

22:39 SoniaKeys I learned quickly to always show preview.  I learned this making simple typos, but there are bigger mistakes possible, like messing up the entry before yours when adding a new one.
