03:29 Dgamey[RCo] anyone know about people who change licensing from GFDL?
03:32 soniakeys don't know GFDL that well, but i would think if it's your ip, then you can license it any way you want.
03:33 soniakeys if it's not your ip, then i don't think there's much you can do.  maybe i'm not understanding what you're asking though
03:34 Dgamey[RCo] hi Sonia,  I want to harvest code for a language distro.  Mike mention gdfl and then said some people dual license which sounds messy.
03:34 Dgamey[RCo] btw nice rework on rsa
03:34 soniakeys thx :) ...
03:35 soniakeys well, for example, i post some of my rc examples on my blog.  when i post there, i specify that the license is MIT
03:36 soniakeys that lets people actually use my code, which is what i want.  i'm not sure GFDL actually lets you incorporate code in other working programs.
03:37 soniakeys but i'm not comprehensive about it.  i don't republish all of my RC contributions with the MIT license, that would be a lot of work and I don't think it's that important.
03:37 Dgamey[RCo] I was trying to work out mechanics.  I would have thought if RC was GDFL no one could override.  Impossible to unwind stuff especially if it get modified later and not under the same lic.
03:37 Dgamey[RCo] Don't know the MIT lic.
03:38 soniakeys right.  i don't think you'll be able to republish it with anything but the GFDL.  which doesn't seem so bad to me...
03:38 Dgamey[RCo] Probably need to post a license warning or something if I intend to harvest and rebublish (always w/credit back to RC)
03:40 soniakeys i'd just read the terms of the GFDL carefully and do whatever it says.  i know though--GFDL is kind of big and complex and it won't be fun to puzzle it all out.
03:40 Dgamey[RCo] Fine when we harvest we note it originally came from GDFL.  Unless it came from some prior Public Domain (NSA) type lic.
03:40 Dgamey[RCo] I can't see GDFL trumping cited prior art that has NSA
03:41 soniakeys no, it wouldn't
03:41 Dgamey[RCo] If it's free it's free.
03:41 soniakeys yep
03:42 Dgamey[RCo] New stuff, would publish the code as doc and reference RC and GDFL.  Common sense suggests I'm done at that point.
03:42 Dgamey[RCo] Credit given.  License propigated.  As long as no fee's taken ...
03:43 soniakeys i would hope so, but, i would read the GFDL to be sure.
03:43 Dgamey[RCo] my speeling sucks tonight
03:43 soniakeys hey, it's the internet
03:43 Dgamey[RCo] lol
03:44 soniakeys how are you thinking this distribution will be used?  i'm not seeing the value of it over just accessing the RC site.
03:44 Dgamey[RCo] I guess. I'll raise the point with the Unicon team about their distro.  We wanted to put the RC code in a Rosetta directory.
03:45 soniakeys people will be more likely to look at it and play with it if they don't have to download it?
03:45 Dgamey[RCo] Just a redistribution pointing back here. Redundancy. Also it would make RC better known in that (small) community.
03:46 Dgamey[RCo] Right now Unicon comes with several code libraries the IPL and Unilib.  I wanted to add the Roesetta examples too.
03:46 soniakeys (i wonder sometimes if RC isn't best known among first year programming students looking for homework solutions)
03:47 soniakeys i see
03:47 Dgamey[RCo] I've found it useful in talking to programmers that I have no common language with.
03:48 soniakeys i know for my language of choice though, i would want something more selective than just a distribution of all implemented tasks.
03:49 Dgamey[RCo] There's a large code base already. Additonal examples would be of interest.  Who's to say what someone find useful.
03:50 Dgamey[RCo] Some of the tasks are quite insightful
03:50 Dgamey[RCo] Some form of annotation would probably help but I can capture that here too.  Like the Unicon Tutorial.
03:51 soniakeys i'm awful picky.  there are a few tasks i would pick as both excellent tasks and tasks that really spotlight the language.
03:51 mwn3d_phone soniakeys: I definitely saw students using it for homework help. Most of the homeworks nowadays are more complicated than the tasks that they would understand though.
03:51 soniakeys heh.  the thought of a book had crossed my mind.
03:51 Dgamey[RCo] sure point them out.  But why restrict - it's not that much realestate
03:52 Dgamey[RCo] book
03:52 Dgamey[RCo] interesting
03:52 Dgamey[RCo] Did you ever try Man or Boy?
03:53 soniakeys i think i did do that one recently.  If i remember it wasn't all that stressing for my language.
03:54 Dgamey[RCo] Sure sharpens understanding of language semantics though
03:54 Dgamey[RCo] About RSA and crypto
03:56 soniakeys ah, no, the Go entry for man or boy test is not my code.  I did compile and run the posted code though.
03:56 soniakeys (that's why i remembered it.  i was testing it to see that it worked.)
03:56 Dgamey[RCo] I started some notes on the talk page about where to go with it.  Lots of possibilities with crypto.  Trying to figure out categories, but looking at semantic media wiki as a solution
03:57 Dgamey[RCo] Looking for input.  Crypto is very disorganized right now.
03:57 Dgamey[RCo] If you have a chance look at the discussion.
03:58 mwn3d_phone Figuring out a nice way to use SMW would help the site as a whole as well as the tasks you're trying to organize
03:58 soniakeys oh i know.  rsa could turn into a big multi-part task, so could crypto.  not sure rsa is worth tht much effort.  i think it's no longer the cutting edge of crypto research.
03:58 mwn3d_phone But you probably already know my feelings on all that
03:59 soniakeys mwn3d_phone:  i agree.  i'd love to see stuff sensibly tagged for SMW
03:59 Dgamey[RCo] Yea - but figuring out what to do.  What it should look like.
03:59 mwn3d_phone There's nothing in place now so talk about it here or even just try something out
04:00 mwn3d_phone If you try something try to keep it small...just enough to demonstrate
04:00 mwn3d_phone People will probably talk about it once it starts
04:00 mwn3d_phone "Don't ask for permission, ask for forgiveness" I've been told at work :p
04:00 Dgamey[RCo] I need time to play with it.  Then stand back and look at the result.  Then tinker.
04:00 soniakeys i'll put some more thought into it.
04:01 soniakeys lol.  yes.  popular strategy.
04:01 Dgamey[RCo] A few sandbox pages might work.
04:01 mwn3d_phone Sounds like a good idea
04:03 Dgamey[RCo] And have it all work for multiple tags.
04:04 mwn3d_phone Multiple definitions for one SMW property go into a list for that page (example to come in next message)
04:04 Dgamey[RCo] When I thought about crypo there are so many categories.  They aren't heiraarcichal.  But I may want to view some specific combinations.
04:05 Dgamey[RCo] Simple.  Cryptography + Encryption or Cryptography + Analysis
04:05 mwn3d_phone So page A tagged with [[tag::value1]] and [[tag::value2]] will show with both values in a list on the Property:Tag page
04:05 fedaykin http://rosettacode.org/wiki/tag::value1 (Doesn't exist.)  http://rosettacode.org/wiki/tag::value2 (Doesn't exist.)
04:05 mwn3d_phone Eugh...sorry, bot
04:05 Dgamey[RCo] More complex, Cryptography, Analyis, Machines,
04:08 Dgamey[RCo] With Cryptography as a main category but ways of getting to the combinations.  Would the Crypto category page drill down into the others, or would something else happen.
04:09 mwn3d_phone I'm not sure how to make tree structures like that with SMW
