06:59 Globules[RCo] When trying to upload an SVG file (or a PNG) I get an error saying it's an invalid file type.  Anyone else getting this?
10:39 FireFly joined #rosettacode
12:12 mwn3d_phone Globules[RCo]: someone had problems like that before. I can't quite remember the solution. There was at least one time where someone changed the file extension by renaming the file rather than by changing the file encoding. That caused problems.
12:12 mwn3d_phone I think that had a different error message though
12:13 mwn3d_phone I'll have to look through some things when I get to a real computer to find our conversations about uploading
12:14 mwn3d_phone There was another weird solution that we tried
12:37 mikemol Globules[RCo]: You're trying to upload as '.svg'? That *should* work.
12:38 mikemol Otherwise, we've been having problems with rsvg attempting to render svg files with <text> elements.
12:39 mikemol Something else that was noticed; disabling JavaScript execution fixed the problem for one person.
12:40 mwn3d_phone mikemol: oh hey. I thought you wouldn't be reconnected to the collective till tomorrow.
12:41 mikemol I'm back today, just "very, very busy"
12:41 mikemol You don't want to know how many unread emails I had.
12:41 mikemol And I'm off to work.

17:00 Globules[RCo] As suggested earlier, the problem I had with uploading files (in FF5 on Kubuntu) was fixed by disabling Javascript.
17:02 mwn3d_phone Globules[RCo]: glad it works now
18:31 mikemol It looks like I've got a real fire brewing on the wiki that I'll need to do something about. :(
18:33 mikemol First, yes, I think mark isn't going about his GUISS pi example in the right way. Second, I think [[Pi]] is overspecified; a task that specifies a spigot pi algorithm is great, but if there's need for a less-specific pi example (and I think there is), then [[Pi]] should always point to the least-specific pi task on the site.
18:33 fedaykin http://rosettacode.org/wiki/Pi  http://rosettacode.org/wiki/Pi
18:34 mikemol (By the simple reason of [[Pi]] sharing the same name as the constant it refers to)
18:34 fedaykin http://rosettacode.org/wiki/Pi
18:35 mikemol The Mark vs the Wiki (or Wiki vs Mark; I can see it getting malicious on both sides) is getting bad again, and nobody has looked for a 'third option'
18:35 mwn3d_phone left #rosettacode
18:37 mikemol Mark's suggestion of a template specifically identifying how an example deviates from task requirements isn't bad; documented deviancy is something I've generally endorsed. Unlike what Ledrug appears to think, such a template shouldn't be taken as an excuse not to replace or supplement the code with something more conformant, where such code is possible.
18:38 Hypftier Well, sometimes one doesn't have the time to correct the example but can still spot where it's wrong. And sometimes someone doesn't know a language good enough to fix it but good enough to spot a deviation.
18:38 mikemol So, really what we need is for [[Pi]] to be moved to something like [[Pi/Algorithm-name]]. Add something like [[Pi/Constant]] for finding language's builtin constants.
18:38 fedaykin http://rosettacode.org/wiki/Pi  http://rosettacode.org/wiki/Pi/Algorithm-name (Doesn't exist.)  http://rosettacode.org/wiki/Pi/Constant (Doesn't exist.)
18:40 mikemol Hypftier: Sure. And in cases like that, the template (as a derivative of [[Template:Incorrect]]) comes in handy or can be applied more precisely. That doesn't prevent someone more skilled from improving the code.
18:40 fedaykin http://rosettacode.org/wiki/Template:Incorrect
18:40 mikemol (More skilled/more time)
18:40 Hypftier *nods*
18:42 mikemol The trouble between Mark, Ledrug, Dkf et al seems to be that a language example Mark put on [[Pi]] calls out to a different application to retrieve a constant, perhaps because the language can't generate it itself, or perhaps because a task with the simple name [[Pi]] might be thought to mean only 'get me pi'.

20:40 sorear glad to see you back, mikemol
20:40 sorear mikemol, what is the nature of your/RC's relationship to the J community?
20:40 mikemol sorear: Nothing explicit
20:41 mikemol Mostly as a funnel between them and GeSHi, and as the same relationship RC has with just about any language community.
20:42 sorear J, Perl6, and D seem to be statistically overrepresented on RC
20:42 mikemol Mostly because they have the most active contributors, I'm fairly sure.
20:43 * sorear has been studying J since Thursday and has just about reached "groks Spiral" level
20:44 mikemol Used to be TCL was at the top of the list, but Dkf hasn't been nearly as active as he used to be.

20:46 mwn3d_phone joined #rosettacode
20:47 mwn3d_phone Tcl, j, d, and perl 6 (recently) seem to have been really completeness-driven in general on RC
20:49 mwn3d_phone mikemol: going way back on the pergeek archive, the pi constant should show up in a task that we have specifically for built-in constants
20:50 mwn3d_phone Can't remember the name of course....
20:50 * mikemol is really, really busy at work right now.
20:50 mikemol Going to ignore the channel unless there's an emergency.
