Ugh...that "rollback" link is gonna get me in trouble someday |
| 16:37 |
|
mikemol |
mwn3d_phone: et tu? |
| 16:38 |
|
mikemol |
Set up a second account, and put the extended privs on that one. |
| 16:38 |
|
mwn3d_phone |
I hope ledrug didn't refresh and see the rollback without the correction |
| 16:39 |
|

Is it just me, or are egos on RC generally much more fragile these past few months? |
| 16:39 |
|
mwn3d_phone |
Also his first message in the "java solution" section on the LCM talk page is a good example of where my proposal for the code tag highlighting would help |

We have some.....strong personalities |
| 16:39 |
|
mwn3d_phone |
And sometimes they conflict with established users |
| 16:39 |
|
mikemol |
Always have. They haven't tended to flare up as often as they have these last few months. |
| 16:40 |
|
mwn3d_phone |
Ledrug is strong but he's often funny about it and also often right |
| 16:41 |
|
mwn3d_phone |
Markhobley will confuse me forever I think |
| 16:41 |
|
mwn3d_phone |
Also we're pretty full on basic tasks by now |
| 16:41 |
|
mikemol |
mwn3d_phone: When I tell people my role on RC, I often describe it in terms of managing a bunch of people with competing and conflicting interests and personalities. It's probably the biggest part of the job. |
| 16:41 |
|
mwn3d_phone |
Not too man fundamentals left I don't think |
| 16:41 |
|
mikemol |
mwn3d_phone: Depends on what you mean by fundamentals. |
| 16:41 |
|
mwn3d_phone |
Yeah well... |
| 16:42 |
|
mwn3d_phone |
Terminology aside we have a lot of information |
| 16:42 |
|
mikemol |
I think I understand Mark pretty well. He's largely the opposite of an academically-trained programmer. |
| 16:42 |
|
mwn3d_phone |
And I think people are starting to get into an "improve" mentality in some places |
| 16:42 |
|
mwn3d_phone |
(Ledrug with C examples) |
| 16:42 |
|
mwn3d_phone |
Which makes original contributors uneasy I think |
| 16:44 |
|
mikemol |
We've got the basics for languages and console interfaces, but we're still lacking a lot of fundamentals. |
| 16:45 |
|
mwn3d_phone |
Heh so list them and inspire people |
| 16:45 |
|
mikemol |
I've listed some of them before. The trouble is, they're hard, and that's why nobody touches them. |
| 16:46 |
|
mikemol |
Anything that isn't part of most language's essential feature set isn't likely to popular as tasks, but a lot of general, practical needs for programmers sit in that space. |
| 16:47 |
|
mikemol |
UI, for example. Message processing and passing. Paradigms in data exchange in concurrent environments. |
| 16:47 |
|
mwn3d_phone |
Well some of those things (in java at least) take a bit more than a single snippet |
| 16:48 |
|
mwn3d_phone |
You need to make a whole system |
| 16:48 |
|
mikemol |
Most of the fundamentals remaining, I think, aren't supported directly or conveniently by most languages, so they require support libraries. |
| 16:48 |
|
mikemol |
You don't really need to make a large system to demonstrate their use, though you would in order to demonstrate their implementation. |
| 16:49 |
|
mikemol |
We've got practice with that kind of problem, though. See things like [[RCBF]], or any other task where most examples are broken out into separate pages. |

| 16:51 |
|
mikemol |
Like I said, they're not trivial problems, which is why we still lack good task coverage on them. |
| 16:53 |
|
mwn3d_phone |
Anthing involving more than two user-defined classes in java gets a little messy on the site. You can put them on separate pages if you want but that doesn't feel right to me. I'm not sure what I want for that. Maybe a tree structure like an IDE? |
| 16:54 |
|
mwn3d_phone |
[[RCSNUSP/Java]] has two classes I think. They're both on the same page. That seems to work well enough. |

(Even if the way I coded it probably isn't ideal) |
| 16:56 |
|
mwn3d_phone |
It'd be easy for the example writer to just upload an archive and add some explanatory text to the task page but that wouldn't be good for the reader I don't think. |
| 16:56 |
|
mwn3d_phone |
(And it probably introduces interesting securit problems) |
