00:23 mikemol poll: If you use dnstracer to retrieve the A record for rosettacode.org, is it served by worldnic.com or he.net?
00:23 mikemol I transfered DNS to be served by he.net, and I'm watching for how long it takes for things to propagate.
00:28 mikemol "dnstracer -c4 rosettacode.org"

17:57 TimToady for some definition of "briefly" not including < ½hr, it would seem...
18:01 mikemol hm
18:02 sorear at least it wasn't hosted in socal
18:02 mikemol urf
18:02 mikemol What do you get when you ping rosettacode.org?
18:02 mikemol or dig A rosettacode.org
18:03 TimToady PING prgmr1.rosettacode.org (71.19.147.227) 56(84) bytes of data.
18:03 mikemol k
18:03 TimToady and then nuthin
18:05 mikemol Hm. That's strange. IP address is correct, but you're not getting echo responses?
18:06 mikemol I did find and correct an error in squid's configuration (it was still set to the old IP address), but that shouldn't affect ICMP echo.
18:12 mikemol What happens if you ping prgmr2.rosettacode.org?
18:13 mikemol TimToady: Is it still down for you?
18:29 FireFly I can't ping prgmr2.rosettacode.com
18:29 fedaykin "Cash Advance | Debt Consolidation | Insurance | Free Credit Report | Cell Phones at Rosettacode.com"
18:29 FireFly err
18:29 FireFly oops
18:30 FireFly Right, prgmr2.rosettacode.org responds :)
18:30 dagnyscott damn, the guy who owns the .com site let his registration slip
18:31 mikemol Ugh
18:31 mikemol And I'd offered to buy it from him, too.
18:32 TimToady prgmr2 pongs me too
18:32 mikemol I knew it was going to slip, saw the expiration date, and he turned me down.
18:32 mikemol What about prmr1.rosettacode.org?
18:32 mikemol er
18:32 mikemol prgmr1.rosettacode.org
18:32 fedaykin "ERROR: The requested URL could not be retrieved"
18:32 mikemol fedaykin: That's not cool.
18:32 TimToady still down for me
18:32 mikemol fedaykin: what about rosettacode.org?
18:33 mwn3d_phone If it matters at all I can get to the site in my browser
18:33 mikemol I can as well.
18:33 mikemol TimToady gets the right IP address, but isn't able to reach it.
18:34 TimToady I can get the website now
18:34 mwn3d_phone And when I ping rosettacode.org I get responses from prgmr1
18:34 fedaykin "Rosetta Code - Rosetta Code"
18:34 mikemol ok.
18:34 mikemol So everything seems to agree that prgmr1.rosettacode.org is up.
18:34 fedaykin "ERROR: The requested URL could not be retrieved"
18:34 mwn3d_phone 71.19.147.227
18:34 mikemol fedaykin: That's because there's no vhost for that domain name.
18:35 FireFly Both works fine here
18:37 mikemol ok, I think fedaykin will see prgmr1.rosettacode.org as RC, now.
18:38 fedaykin "ERROR: The requested URL could not be retrieved"
18:38 mikemol Hm
18:38 mwn3d_phone I think the internet needs a "dig A pony" (a beatles song or a unix command) joke but I can't think of one right now
18:39 mwn3d_phone I get an access denied in the browser
18:39 mwn3d_phone For prgmr1
18:40 mwn3d_phone FWIW the text on the page sarts with "ERROR The requested URL could not be retrieved"
18:40 mikemol Squid configuration. The apache vhosts were set up, but squid wasn't allowing that domain.
18:40 mikemol prgmr1.rosettacode.org should work, now.
18:40 fedaykin "Rosetta Code - Rosetta Code"
18:40 mwn3d_phone Whoo!
18:41 mikemol It just 301 redirects to rosettacode.org
18:41 fedaykin "Rosetta Code - Rosetta Code"
18:41 mikemol fedaykin: Yes, we know.
19:08 mikemol prgmr2 is where RC will be migrating to over the next couple weeks.
19:08 mikemol My intent is for it to have updated software all around, and it will be IPv6 accessible.
19:20 damagednoob joined #rosettacode
19:22 mwn3d_phone I'm waiting on a firmware update to get IPv6 here
19:22 mwn3d_phone I just got a linksys E2500 and I saw somewhere that says they plan to have it soon
19:25 mikemol mwn3d_phone: Does your upstream ISP offer IPv6 yet?
19:26 mwn3d_phone Pretty sure
19:26 mwn3d_phone time warner cable is pretty popular
19:26 mwn3d_phone You'd think someone would have complained enough to get it
19:28 sorear mwn3d_phone: wishful thinking
19:28 sorear I don't think any major US residential ISP offers IPv6 yet
19:30 mwn3d_phone I see a post from february with a list of ISPs...
19:30 mwn3d_phone "Time warner: currently supporting 'dual stack'"
19:31 mwn3d_phone Can I trust geekistry.com for that?
19:31 fedaykin "Geekistry: It s all geek to us"
19:33 mwn3d_phone There's also timewarnercable.com/East/support/IPv6.html
19:33 fedaykin "IPv6 | Time Warner Cable | East"
19:33 mwn3d_phone Basically that says "we're close"
19:33 sorear does anyone care about the West/
19:34 mwn3d_phone What's "west"? :p
19:37 sorear mwn3d_phone: I live in a tiny village in the middle of nowhere called "San Diego"
19:38 mwn3d_phone That little place they talked about in "anchorman"?
19:45 slavik1 where is that?
19:51 mikemol Comcast is rumored to be close to IPv6 deployment in my area. In the mean time, I've got a free tunnel through Hurricane Electric which works great.
19:53 mikemol I may have to disable anonymous edits from IPv6, though. It's too easy to spoof one's source IP.
19:55 mikemol A terrible IPv6 ISP would only give you one IPv6 address. A poor IPv6 ISP would give you 2^64 IP addresses. A half-way decent ISP would give you 2^8 or 2^16 times that.
20:21 sorear mikemol: meh, just allow netmask bans
20:36 mikemol sorear: That'd be ideal, but I don't know if MediaWiki has an extension to allow that, yet.
20:41 * sorear wonders if there are any skilled PHP programmers on RC. :D
20:44 mikemol I'm reasonably skilled, I just don't have a whole lot of time.
20:44 mikemol It's helped that I've been sick for two days; I've gotten more done on RC than in quite a while previous.
20:46 mikemol Though if I were to write the extension, I'd automatically ban a user for a few hours for even *attempting* to ban 2000::/3.
20:48 sorear huh?
20:48 sorear I thought only admins could attempt bans
20:48 sorear do we have dangerous admins?
20:48 sorear if so, why are they still admins?
20:48 mikemol Only dangerous inasmuch as they're uninformed.
20:49 sorear do you think we have any admins stupid enough to ban a /3?
20:49 mikemol It's largely a joke; IP subnets extend outside the range of normal web user knowledge. Banning individual IPs is easy. Logically banning subnets is more difficult.
20:49 sorear banning /3 wouldn't even make sense in ipv6
20:50 sorear I've never heard of anyone banning more than a /8
20:51 mikemol I believe 2000::/3 represents the entire unicast range in IPv6. Not sure, though. My books are outdated, and I'm working to absorb and learn as much current practice as possible.
20:51 sorear common sense dictates that users should not be allowed to block themselves.
20:51 sorear because that would be an irreversable action
20:52 * mikemol nods
20:52 mikemol Though I'm not sure if IP bans prevent people from logging in under existing credentials.
20:58 mwn3d_phone mikemol: blocking from the wiki still allows people to log in
20:59 mwn3d_phone It just sets that un-logged-in IP to read only
21:00 mwn3d_phone (Unless of course its a particular user...then they still can't edit if they're logged in)
