01:13 Dgamey[RCo] hi.  I have a media wiki config question.  Can anyone help?
01:21 Dgamey[RCo] anyone there at all?
01:45 mwn3d_phone Dgamey[RCo]: I'm here but I don't know if I can help
01:46 mwn3d_phone Just ask and see if someone else accidentally peeks in too
01:59 Dgamey[RCo] I'm helping a Scouting group with a mediawiki and the email user function is not working.  gmail rejects the email with failed to set user.  RC is successful at this but it doesn't know my email password.  So I was wondering if anyone had insight into what's not working.
02:01 mwn3d_phone mikemol: any recommendations?
02:05 Dgamey[RCo] RC seems to have set up a www-data@rosettacode.org account not sure where though.  This might be a clue.

11:56 mikemol I've been away from my IRC session for a while, unfortunately.
11:58 BenBE2 Yeah, you've been ...
11:58 BenBE2 BTW: Did I mention I HATE mailman?
11:58 mikemol Having MediaWiki be able to send email successfully depends on three things. 1) That MW is allowed to send email (in LocalSettings.php). 2) the system MW is installed on has a functioning MTA. 3) That the IP the machine MW is installed on doesn't sit on a blocked range.
12:00 mikemol I've been spending a lot of time on my new Xoom, but my IRC time is most conveniently done via this IRSSI+screen session. That's hacky on Android, even with a nice, large tablet. I've been thinking I need to learn how to use an IRC bouncer.
12:05 mikemol Hm.
12:06 mikemol It occurs to me you also need to ensure PHP scripts are allowed to send emails.
12:06 mikemol BenBE2: Possibly, but I forget.
12:07 mikemol (And even when I've been logged in via SSH from work, work's been so busy lately that it's difficult to spare a few minutes)
12:32 BenBE2 mikemol AND you have to ensure the local MTA sends mails with the proper envelope sender and helo address ;-)
12:38 BenBE2 mikemol There've been some updates to GeSHi lately on the server ...
12:39 BenBE2 Sent in some of the changes I received.
12:39 BenBE2 ARM7 might follow soon.
12:39 BenBE2 As well as some more languages.

13:48 tonussi Hi guys..
13:48 tonussi I'm in love... and i need to build a algorithm in c that draw a heart, can be simple...
13:51 mikemol tonussi: How much math do you know?
13:51 tonussi I found something that will help me build the algorithm
13:51 tonussi http://www.mathematische-basteleien.de/heart.htm
13:51 fedaykin "Heart Curve"
13:52 tonussi yes...
13:52 mikemol Seems to me you could plot a cardioid.
13:53 tonussi I will build my algorithm and send it to loved one :)
13:56 mikemol There's something close: http://www.wolframalpha.com/input/?i=polar+plot+r%3D%28abs%28theta%29%29+theta%3D-pi+to+pi

13:57 mikemol My brain fails at letting me rotate it 90 degrees counter-clockwise.

14:03 tonussi i learn it in calculus II class.
14:03 tonussi sometime ago.
14:03 tonussi :D
14:03 mikemol Yeah, that's coming up on ten years ago, for me.
14:04 tonussi wolfram alpha is wonderful math-machine
14:05 tonussi his inventor is visionary
14:05 mikemol Visionary, shmisionary. He implemented a cool, useful tool.
14:07 kpreid He took a bunch of stuff and made it shiny and easy to use. Wolfram ~ Jobs?
14:07 mikemol With fewer turtlenecks, and a lack of a cult following. Two plusses, in my book. ;)
14:08 mikemol Or, possibly a smaller cult following. That said, I did read ANKOS when it came out.
14:08 tonussi He is poetry of math and comp science.
14:08 tonussi is a*
14:09 mikemol I've got the wolfram alpha app on my phone, but it's not available for my tablet yet. That's sad. I'd *love* to have WolframAlpha on my tablet...

14:11 mikemol The app for Android will install on phones, but not on my tablet.
14:11 tonussi Great combination, Tablet+Wolfram.
14:11 tonussi awesome.
14:11 tonussi i see.

17:19 mikemol Ok, I suppose it's time to do come up with another mechanism to deal with the spam.
17:21 mikemol It no longer comes in on anonymous accounts, which is good. If I can find a way to make some logged-in accounts as annoying to edit with as anonymous accounts, that'd probably help.
17:23 mikemol Perhaps a privilege level administered via manual confirmation. i.e. "drop this template on your user page, and someone will see to it shortly"
17:24 mikemol With a mechanism like that, we could probably do away with captchas for just about all logged-in users.
17:25 eMBee mwn3d_phone: missed a spot: http://rosettacode.org/wiki/User_talk:Werwetrry
17:25 fedaykin "User talk:Werwetrry - Rosetta Code"
17:25 mikemol (I highly doubt RC is specifically targeted. More likely, it's just handled in bulk with thousands of other MW sites.
17:25 * eMBee nods
17:25 mikemol eMBee: Whups. I didn't see that you cleared that one.
17:26 sorear how about having captchas for account creation, and a "block user + rollback all edits" button
17:27 mikemol Captchas are already required for account creation. I don't know if we have a rollback-all mechanism to automate with blocking, though.
17:27 mikemol Chief thing is that we're getting 3-4 spam accounts a day which come in, make a single edit, and leave. It's as much work for us to clear it as it is for them to make it. So I'd like them to make it less frequently.
17:27 sorear one MW install I used to frequent also had good results by changing around all the field names and stuff so it was incompatible with MW bulk uploaders
17:28 mikemol Huh
17:28 eMBee can mediawiki moderate edits? (allow edits but keepthem hidden until a moderator sees them?)
17:28 mwn3d_phone Tricky tricky
17:28 sorear mikemol: the admin goes by Epyon on this network, if you want details
17:29 mikemol eMBee: I could add an extention to do it, but that'd massively increase overhead for watching things.
17:29 eMBee well, it would only be the first edit of any user (for now anyways)
17:29 mikemol sorear: You just got me thinking about how one could randomize/salt per day.
17:30 eMBee if the first edit is on topic, the the user is free, but that only helps if there are a lot more spam accounts than normal users joining
17:30 mikemol I may poke him at some point, though.
17:30 mikemol For the moment, I've got to get back to work.
17:31 mikemol This weekend, I may be able to get prgmr2 up and working. I think it may depend on dropping apache, though.
17:31 eMBee have you thought about switching away from mediawiki to something more customizable?
17:32 mikemol eMBee: http://rosettacode.org/blog/2009/12/why-and-why-not-mediawiki.html
17:32 fedaykin "Why (and why not) MediaWiki - Rosetta Code Blog" http://rldn.net/9MC
17:32 mikemol Also, MW is incredibly customizable. It just requires the time and effort to do it.
17:34 eMBee ah, yes, that blog post answers my question ,thank you :-)\
18:09 mwn3d_phone Consistently breaking 6k visits this week on the site
18:09 mwn3d_phone Crazy
18:10 mikemol mwn3d_phone: Yeah, I think the site's ambient traffic level has gone up another notch.
18:10 mikemol First noticed it 2-3 weeks ago.
18:10 mwn3d_phone Looks like it started around the beginning of the school year
18:10 mikemol Which reminds me, payday's today.
18:11 * mikemol has bizarre mental connections.
18:11 mwn3d_phone Whoo! o/
18:14 mwn3d_phone http://i.imgur.com/svJYE.png
18:14 mwn3d_phone Impressive spikes this year but definitely an increas in the fall
18:15 sorear the 7-day oscillation is remarkable
18:16 sorear I wonder why it peaks around Tuesday
18:21 mwn3d_phone People probably take Monday and Friday off a lot
18:22 mwn3d_phone (Ps...the spikes in order from earliest to latest are: habrahabr.ru, ycombinator.com, and /.)
18:22 mikemol mwn3d_phone: More like there's 48 hours in a calendar day.
18:22 mikemol Around the world, our local Tuesday fits fully within a weekday. Our local Monday doesn't.
18:26 sorear why aren't there spikes on the weekends?
18:27 mikemol I believe most people use RC for informational purposes while at work.
18:27 Hypftier I get spikes on weekends. But they only started a few weeks ago. Took me a while to realize the connection to summer holidays ending ;)
18:28 mikemol Oh, you mean when the visitor count goes way up?
18:29 mikemol The big traffic-funneling sites may post on Friday, but people don't see the articles until they come into work on Mondays.
18:30 Hypftier and the very large spikes? Mentioned on HN or /.?
18:31 Hypftier oh, nvm
18:32 mikemol mwn3d_phone: Post a pic that goes from January 25th, 2007 up through yesterday.

18:33 mwn3d_phone July 22 2007: 24 visits
18:33 mwn3d_phone Dayum
18:34 mikemol Hm. IIRC, the original Slashdotting happened on or around January 27th.
18:34 mwn3d_phone http://i.imgur.com/CEc2g.png
18:35 sorear mwn3d_phone: is that a weekly average?
18:35 mikemol No
18:35 mwn3d_phone Daily count of "visits"
18:36 mikemol Hm. Maybe the slashdotting was a little earlier.
18:37 mikemol Ah, January 21st.
18:37 mwn3d_phone Jan 21
18:37 mwn3d_phone Lol
18:37 mwn3d_phone 17k is still the record
18:38 mikemol Yeah. What I find amusing is that "normal" traffic is a significant fraction (about 30%) of a slashdotting, now.
18:39 mwn3d_phone Well we got another /. that only brought 6800 this june
18:40 mikemol We weren't the topic in that article. We were the reference supporting the topic.
18:40 mikemol Which is pretty cool on its own...
