20:14 mwn3d_phone Bah....I hate these tasks where you have both arms and a leg tied behind your back
20:17 mwn3d_phone Especially when you get a solution working and then they come and tie your other leg back
20:22 eMBee eh?
20:23 mwn3d_phone [[Odd word problem]]
20:23 fedaykin http://rosettacode.org/wiki/Odd_word_problem
20:26 eMBee oh, gee: no reading in a string, no peeking ahead, no pushing characters back into the stream, and no storing characters in a global variable for later us
20:26 eMBee i see what you mean
20:27 mikemol It's not thought to be a solvable problem. http://c2.com/cgi/wiki?OddWordProblem
20:27 fedaykin "Odd Word Problem"
20:27 mikemol Hm. Perhaps it is.
20:27 mikemol http://c2.com/cgi/wiki?OddWordProblemSolutions
20:27 fedaykin "Odd Word Problem Solutions"
20:29 mwn3d_phone But ledrug changed the rules that they use
20:29 mwn3d_phone (Tying the other leg back)
20:29 mwn3d_phone He added that you can't peek
20:29 mwn3d_phone And those solutions all use buffers I think
20:30 mwn3d_phone I hope he has a solution to contribute
20:30 mikemol I await reading the argument in the talk page.
20:31 mwn3d_phone I remember one problem that he put up where he had a solution but he wanted people to think about it themselves first
20:36 eMBee yeah, sometimes it can be nice if people don't just copy an existing solution but come up with their own...
20:37 mwn3d_phone I don't like it. The majority of a task's existence will be after it has solutions.
20:37 mwn3d_phone I don't see a point in waiting
20:38 mikemol I forget the name of the site (I'm sure it's under [[Help:Similar Sites]] somewhere), but there is one dedicated to "solve this task yourself before you look at the solutions."
20:38 fedaykin http://rosettacode.org/wiki/Help:Similar_Sites
20:38 eMBee well i'd see the point in that there are at least two different heads in the beginning: the one who writes the task and the one who provides the first solution
20:40 mikemol There are definite problems when most solutions on a page are translations of other solutions. Several tasks have had the same bug crop up in multiple solutions because of things like that.
20:40 eMBee bug compatible ;-)
20:41 mikemol OTOH, I think the usual purpose behind "Reach these ends. No, you can't use those means. Or those means." in some tasks is to force the solution writer out of the mindset of a particular idiom so that they can discover and understand another.
20:41 mikemol That's always an uncomfortable activity. :)
20:42 mikemol Usually, though, it means the task isn't well-specified.
