Time Nick Message
00:23 mikemol Interesting. My squid log shows 103,650 requests served over a time where Google Analytics shows about 8470 pageviews.
00:25 mikemol If I grep the squid log for 'text/html', it's down to 16,973 requests.
00:28 mikemol And that still points at Google Analytics underreporting page views to the tune of 49.90% of actual.
00:29 mikemol Oh, and Squid pushed 3,692MiB of data across all requests.
00:29 mikemol (for the same time period)
00:38 mikemol Hm. That suggests I pushed around 144GB of data in November.

00:40 mikemol Ok, whew. I've got a network transfer cap of 320GiB/mo. I'm only a little over halfway there.
00:41 mikemol But at this growth rate, downgrading won't be an option for me. I was considering downgrading the VPS to the $20/mo plan from the $36/mo plan (as shown here: http://prgmr.com/xen/ )...but it doesn't look like I'd fit in the network cap for that size much longer.

07:27 Showell[RCo] stupid wiki-related question: how do I participate on Talk pages and get my name/timestamp automatically inserted?  (I can get to the Discussion tab, but I don't know the magic markup)
07:27 sorear I think it's ~~~~ on MediaWiki-based wikis
07:28 sorear might just be ~~
07:28 Showell[RCo] is there a reference somewhere?

23:41 mwn3d_phone mikemol: good news: my donation cleared
23:41 mwn3d_phone (I wasn't worried about it)
23:41 mikemol Cool
23:42 mwn3d_phone I wonder if there is anything we can do to compress the site data we send so that we use less bandwidth
23:42 mikemol Absolutely.
23:42 mwn3d_phone It'd be nice to delay a plan upgrade
23:43 mikemol I should be able to have squid handle deflate/gzip compression.
23:43 mwn3d_phone I've seen people with websites using javascript compressing programs
23:43 mwn3d_phone It just reduces the javascript code size
23:43 mikemol Not really applicable here.
23:44 mikemol Slapping deflate on the front of squid will cut things down immensely.
23:46 mwn3d_phone I wonder what that would do to mobile load times. I'm guessing the client has to do compression when sending data and it has to decompress when receiving?
23:46 mikemol Most websites use compression already.
23:46 mikemol I chopped it because it was killing cache hits.
23:46 mikemol Just need to enable it again, but in squid.
23:46 mikemol It'll be a net gain for mobile devices anyhow, because their bandwidth is generally limited.
23:47 mwn3d_phone Another thing on your ever-growing "I'll look into it" pile
23:47 * mikemol nods
23:47 mikemol They're mostly driven by need. If something needs to happen, it happens. If I get pestered enough about it, it needs to happen. :)
23:48 mikemol If you want to see something interesting, though, take a look at Content -> Site content -> Site speed under analytics.
23:49 mikemol Average page load time was 8.4 seconds for the month of December.
23:49 mikemol It'll probably be better in January, just because I won't be dinking around with the server so much.
23:52 mikemol Though, so far, for January, it's up at 12.66. Perhaps I'll do some dinking around with the server after all.
23:52 mikemol It'd be good to get a differentiation between page load times for 'conversions' (which are tied to things like edits) vs non-conversions.
23:56 mwn3d_phone The google plus button usually takes a while for me
23:56 mwn3d_phone Especially on my phone
