01:21 Coderjoe and he has returned to replenish the entropy
01:22 Coderjoe and I discovered my two physical linux servers at home are rather entropy-starved as well
01:22 mikemol Heh
01:23 mikemol I'm actually running low on entropy at home, too.
01:24 mikemol I did order an EntropyKey which I should be able to run locally, to help deal with that.
01:24 mikemol And, dangit, I haven't had time today to write that program to store off entropy when there's extra.
01:26 TimToady is it time to invest in companies that make entropy boards?
01:26 mikemol Probably
01:26 mikemol Well, possibly not.
01:26 Coderjoe you already ordered? darn. I was wondering about pooling funds, getting an oem pack, and selling off any that we didn't need
01:26 mikemol The newest Intel procs are supposed to have an awesome built-in trng, but those aren't widely deployed yet.
01:27 TimToady .oO(go not to the Elves for advice, for they will say both "yes" and "no")
01:27 mikemol Coderjoe: Still interested? I'd go in for it.
01:28 Coderjoe unfortunately, a single OEM pack is like $436
01:28 mikemol Oh, right. Ow.
01:28 mikemol Well, we could prod Casey.
01:30 Coderjoe too bad the exchange rate sucks
01:31 mikemol TimToady: I don't think the entropy problem is widely known, except to a relatively tight grouping of interested parties.
01:31 mikemol I.e. I doubt most VPS customers realize the problems they currently face from lack of entropy.
01:32 mikemol I figure it's probable there will be a wave of hype about entropy once people catch on. If you invest, you'll probably want to get in before that happens.
01:33 mikemol OTOH, when that hype wave hits, there's likely to be all kinds of clever people coming up with solutions, so demand for entropy accessory hardware might never materialize.
01:33 Coderjoe i'm rather curious where the entropy is going on these two systems. (I know the typical sinks, but given the typical duties of these systems, I wouldn't expect them to be near-constantly at 128)
01:34 Coderjoe of course, it could be the lack of a user at the console
01:34 Coderjoe combined with just your normal stuff
01:36 Coderjoe here's an article on the new intel RNG: http://spectrum.ieee.org/computing/hardware/behind-intels-new-randomnumber-generator

02:24 mikemol Server is consuming about 100B/s of entropy from my home network.
02:25 mikemol I've got two machines feeding entropy to my router, which is feeding entropy to my HTPC, which is feeding entropy to the server at about 100B/s.

10:01 eMBee entropy@home!
10:07 Hypftier donations to RC are now in entropy bits? ;)

10:25 eMBee well, year, a program running in the background that collects entropy from desktops that don't need it and feeds it to a server. a service like random.org that sells off the bits and donates to charity, and an additional option in the program to upload the bits to any other server which could use it for itself. all the rc users could contribute to rc, wikipedia users to wikipedia, etc...
10:25 fedaykin "RANDOM.ORG - True Random Number Service"
10:26 eMBee android and iphone apps
10:27 eMBee erm, well, yeah... :-)
10:28 sorear a $30 hardware dongle generates entropy bits as fast as a few million to a few billion desktops
10:29 sorear the hardest parts of this problem relate to the fact that rc is on a VPS

19:27 sorear eMBee: entropy sources are not supposed to be manipulatable by external sources.  During 2.6, the code to get entropy from packet arrival times was removed because it was too manipulable
