09:02 mikemol Spam is back.
09:03 mikemol On analysis of five of the spam accounts so far, all five accounts use unique email addresses from two domains. Both domains are owned by two different companies, but the registrant for both companies is Paul Tyma (iggychaos), the guy behind Mailinator.
09:04 mikemol While I don't think Paul is the spammer, his Mailinator servers are clearly being used by spammers in an automated fashion.
09:14 mikemol Implemented dnsbl.

13:22 mikemol eMBee: What?
13:23 mikemol That someone finds it worth their while to specifically work anti-spam barriers RC puts up?
13:24 eMBee yes
13:24 eMBee and that it leads to mailinator being blocked
13:25 mikemol Right now, not blocking mailinator.
13:25 eMBee i like to use mailinator for things where i don't want to reveal my identity. (and i'd usie it for rc if i weren't interested in getting mails like for watched pages)
13:26 eMBee well, you are blocking domains that (aparently) belong to mailinator
13:26 mikemol Also, right now, I don't see a point in trying to block mailinator; neither of the accounts are from mailinator itself, they're from domains owned by the same guy. Which tells me he's probably going to have dozens of servers...
13:26 mikemol dnsbl blocks by visitor IP, not by email IP.
13:26 eMBee yes, mailinator offers several alternative domains
13:27 eMBee oh, ok then i missunderstood
13:27 eMBee i thought you'd block accounts using certain email addresses
13:27 mikemol http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Combating_spam#Honeypots.2C_DNS_BL.27s_and_HTTP_BL.27s
13:28 mikemol I'd block by email address, except each spam account has a unique address. I'd block by email server, except that right now, that'd be a losing battle.
13:30 mikemol What'd be neat is the ability to greylist. If your email server is on the greylist, then some different set of ACLs is applied to you. Perhaps the confirmation email doesn't go out right away. Perhaps you can't upload files without manual verification. Perhaps you can't make edits which add links to pages.
13:51 ttmrichter Wait, what?!  Spammers are attacking RC?
13:52 mikemol ttmrichter: More like specifically targeting. We're not under a DDOS or anything like that.
13:54 ttmrichter What could spammers be selling that anybody on RC would be interested in?
14:22 mikemol What's the internet for?
14:22 mikemol Weightloss drugs, bitcoins and...porn.
14:30 ttmrichter Ah.  Bitcoins.
14:30 ttmrichter Play money for the geek set.  :)
14:32 mikemol At one point, they were worth enough that I was looking at taking them as donations, but the market for them crashed before I had time to figure out and set up the daemon.

21:20 mikemol Coderjoe: hey, any idea why "entropywatch|cat" doesn't work.
21:20 mikemol I'm converting the whole setup to use autotools, and it's killing my attempt at a basic output unit test.
