02:38 mikemol Well, I now have an up-to-date backup copy of RC's database. Testing to see if I can easily and automatically pull backups of the various files and configurations.
02:38 mikemol (I'll know the answer to that after I wake up...)
02:39 mikemol If it turns out I can, then I should have fully automatic rolling backups of the database and files four times a day, with daily, weekly and monthly snapshots.
02:40 mikemol The fun part will be making sure at least the daily, weekly and monthly backups exist somewhere else. I'm probably going to set up an rsnapshot post command that tarballs them, compresses them with xz, encrypts them with gpg...and then sticks them in my dropbox.
02:54 mwn3d_phone mikemol: I have a netbook sitting here connected to the internet pretty much all the time with 33GB of free space on it. Would that be useful to you at all for storage?
02:54 mwn3d_phone Its just running BOINC and an IRC bot
02:54 mwn3d_phone and fedora
02:59 mikemol I'll be able to answer that better once I know how large the backup is.
02:59 mwn3d_phone As long as you can help me get DNS set up for it I can donate it to the cause
03:01 mikemol I'd probably just set you up with an authenticated gogoc tunnel. DNS becomes automatic (and largely static), and no port forwarding is necessary.
03:01 mikemol Just need to remember to set up a firewall on the tunnel interface. ^^
03:04 mikemol Looks like a single full snapshot is 4.2GB. A naive copy of the full rolling backup after three months, assuming no increase in base size, would be about fifteen times that...but this wouldn't be a naive copy. (Most things would be hardlinked. Tar would preserve the hardlinks. Then the whole thing passes through xz.)
03:04 mikemol So not sure...but it'd be worth a shot.
03:11 mikemol mwn3d_phone: Anyway, to start: http://www.gogo6.com/freenet6/account
03:11 fedaykin "Freenet6 Account"
03:13 mwn3d_phone I just freed up another half gig. Just over 34 now. I removed some packages I'm pretty much guaranteed not to use on that thing.
03:13 mikemol What I'll do from there is add a job to the end of the backup to rsync over encrypted tarballs.
03:15 mwn3d_phone Does it matter that I don't have IPv6 here yet?
03:16 mikemol That's what the freenet6 account does for you.
03:16 mikemol Sets up a NAT-punching tunnel.
03:17 mikemol Only thing to be careful with is to be sure to set up a an ip6tables firewall on the machine. Other than that, it's easy peasy.
03:18 mikemol Anyway, I'm off to sleep.
03:18 mikemol Too little sleep this week, and I need to get some extra.
03:25 mwn3d_phone mikemol: I have ip6tables installed and I have an account on freenet6. Let me know what else you want me to do whenever.
