05:30 bruce Hello, everyone. How are we all on this fine autumn afternoon?
05:32 TimToady about to go to bed on a fine spring night
05:34 bruce Ah, so you're Northern Hemisphere then
05:34 bruce Hey, while you're there, you've been doing a great job killing off all the spam
05:34 bruce just wanted to know how "Kimberley" gets to be a bad username
05:35 TimToady by not posting anything afterward, and it's only for 3 days :)
05:35 TimToady if you have knowledge that Kimberley should not be banned, we can fix that
05:36 bruce Hmmm ... I think we will have to wait until he/she complains
05:37 TimToady usually a new user will post something else within the hour
05:37 TimToady and it's been three hours
05:37 TimToady so it's probably just a spammer account
05:37 bruce ah ... ok
05:37 bruce fair enuf then
05:37 TimToady but it's admittedly a guess, which we've been marking by not suspending them quite so long
05:38 TimToady funny thing is, the bots aren't scanning for links anymore, so the spam is useless in any case
05:38 bruce they must be being paid per insertion
05:39 TimToady all I can figure, and nobody's checking that the insertions actually stick
05:39 bruce Pity we're not paid per {{remove}}al
05:39 TimToady we're paid in karma :)
05:40 bruce karma? hmm ... must be my dharma to be doing the removing
05:42 bruce anyway, you were heading for horizontality. sorry to keep you in the vertical

06:03 bruce Correction: first day of Winter
06:07 TimToady well, it's still May here, for another 52 minutes
06:08 TimToady (still up because I was being told I have to get up even earlier in the morning, yawn...)
06:16 bruce one's spouse?
06:17 bruce twenty more minutes and spouse and I go down to the church to do some gardening
06:33 embee winter starts on the 1st down south? over here it's on the 21st...
06:41 bruce It's a calendar thing, more than a movement of the sun thing. Yes, it makes more sense for the seasons to be considered in light of equinoxes and solstices, but in Australia people have this weird notion that Winter starts of the 1st of June and ends on the 31st of August

06:48 embee interesting
06:51 embee well, fair enough, over here, right up north from you are i keep saying that we have 5 months of winter, 1 month of spring, 5 months of summer and one month of autumn, simply going by the temperatures...
07:27 n0z3d where are you ?

09:22 bruce I'm in Perth, WA Australia
09:22 ttmrichter A guy named Bruce.  From Australia.  Riiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiight.
09:47 bruce You find that hard to believe, I take it
09:48 bruce I'm 52 years old. Bruce was a common enough name back then
09:49 n0z3d bruce - is there such a thing as southern aurora ?
09:50 ttmrichter bruce: I was more commenting on how stereotypical that name is.  :)
09:53 bruce aurora australis. southern equivalent of aurora borealis
09:56 n0z3d bruce - you ever see it from Perth ? reason i ask was another post re ''pretty sure no auroras visible from mainland australia''
09:58 bruce it's only very occasionally visible from Perth. A friend a couple of days ago told me about how he'd seen it in Kalgoorlie some years earlier.
10:00 n0z3d thanks - here usually visable only a few hundreds miles south of Canada - but sometimes as far south as New Orleans

10:59 n0z3d a Yottabyte (10^12 terabytes) of data - how do they back that up ? http://www.wired.com/threatlevel/2012/03/ff_nsadatacenter/all/1

14:04 bruce backing up big data is actually quite interesting all of a sudden, as where I work we're starting to build largish datasets that need to be stored somehow somewhere
14:08 embee it gets even more interestng to send that data over large distances
14:18 bruce yeah, my son was telling me about that. He was an intern with one of the organisations related to the Square Kilometre Array (radio telescope project). He had interesting stories to tell of people trying to figure out how to store, retrieve, backup and multiplex all that data coming from all those 'scopes
14:28 bruce seems we're not the only ones having to deal with spam bots. I have sourceforge's Recently-approved Projects RSS feed open and they are getting pounded with stuff like http://sourceforge.net/u/intirathurne/profile/

14:45 embee i remember reading about scientists shipping whole computers, with lots of harddisks full of data, including an OS ready to boot, that the recipient just needed to hook up and run to use the data

15:40 sorear the old joke about FedEx as a data carrier is more true than ever these days
15:47 ttmrichter It'd be hard to beat the bandwidth of a FedEx truck packed to the gills with 32GB MicroSD cards.  :)
15:54 sorear and a rocket loaded with them compares pretty well in $/byte to most space radio schemes
16:16 Hypftier but the latency ... ;)
