03:09 mikemol Good News Everyone
03:09 mikemol /Farnsworth
03:10 mikemol RC has a sponsor again. :)
03:11 mikemol The Webhosting/outsourced IT company I work for is going to sponsor RC, in exchange for, well, exposure of some of the stuff we sell (and will be selling).
03:11 mikemol ("we" being my employer, in that sentence)
03:23 eMBee nice
03:24 eMBee it's especially great to have support from your own employer
03:24 mikemol Hosting is (at least initially) going to consist of a VM. But there was some discussion of me being able to purchase and install my own hardware. I should be able to get 12GB of RAM across eight dedicated Xeon cores for about $250. To get 2/3rds of that through prgmr, I'd be looking at $132/mo.
03:25 mikemol (Whereas that $250 would be a one-time cost.)
03:27 mikemol Basically, I'd be buying a couple blades for RC's use.
03:27 * mikemol crosses his fingers
03:28 eMBee and your company would cover the cost?
03:28 mikemol No, I stipulated up fron that the purchase of those two blades would be covered by me.
03:28 mikemol Even then, though, it's a no-brainer.
03:29 eMBee what are you getting then? free rackspace and bandwidth?
03:29 mikemol They'd still be covering power and bandwidth. And if my hosting provider's network breaks, I get to go in and fix it.
03:30 mikemol Side benefit is it brings me back a lot closer to RC, and would allow me to respond to issues much more quickly. *Maybe* even while on the clock.
03:30 mikemol Well, that's not even a side benefit. That's just huge.
03:30 eMBee yeah, that's what i thought is why employer support is great
03:32 eMBee even if they won't allow you to do it on the clock, they will likely allow you to take a break to fix issues and just let you make up the instead of making an issue out of it
03:32 eMBee make up the time
03:33 mikemol Yup. I do that all the time with prenatal-related issues.  And, yeah, that hypothetical $250-up-front scenario would have me purchasing two blades to go in a blade chassis. Even if the procs are pre-sandy-bridge, that's still immensely better than equivalent-RAM VMs at any current VM host. And no monthly fee...
03:34 mikemol But it's not just about supporting me or RC. It's also very much about dollars and numbers. The angle for getting exposure to RC services is very important to them.
03:36 mikemol We-as-in-employer have a few things coming down the pipe whose target market include mainstream programmers, and the exposure will be very good.
03:37 mikemol It works out really well for both parties. :)
04:00 kpreid What kind of 'exposure' do you have in mind? Fixed ads?
04:03 mikemol Yeah, fixed ads.
04:04 kpreid Sounds good then. "Brought to you by..."
04:04 kpreid (more literally than usual, even)
04:04 mikemol Although at least some of the stuff my employer will be selling is API based, so there may be some new tasks to help improve the documentation available for interacting with web services cleanly with a given language.
04:05 mikemol SOAP, JSON-RPC, XML-RPC, all that jazz.
04:05 eMBee sounds great
04:07 mikemol It's highly unlikely there will be any employer-specific API tasks, unless the employer is able to open up stub and/or test instances for people to hammer on. And I don't know the likelihood of that.
04:07 kpreid If I were doing this, then I would be cautious, as follows:
04:08 kpreid I would introduce any such _motivated_ task as a draft task, and leave it to the community to promote it. (If that's still how it goes in RC; I haven't participated in a long time.)
04:08 kpreid Problem is that the newest thing in the recent changes _feed_ is _always_ spam. Discouraging.
04:08 mikemol To my knowledge, that's still how it goes in RC. Both task promulgation and the recent changes feed.
04:09 kpreid Hm.
04:09 mikemol It gets better at times, to be sure.
04:09 mikemol There *is* a way to do a better job solving it, but it requires having time I haven't had.
04:09 eMBee i don't see company specific tasks as a problem, they wouldn't really stand out and dominate rc unless they make a lot of them
04:10 * kpreid fiddles his feed reader settings to see if he can get it to discard the presumably deleted-shortly-afterward items
04:11 mikemol eMBee: Agreed. And even if there do get to be a lot of such tasks, it's not likely they'd get out of draft status at a flood rate, since people would likely lose interest.
04:12 mikemol Anyway, to solve the spam problem, the best thing to do would be to write a MediaWiki extension that ties into the IP ban functionality, and accesses CloudFlare's API to copy IP blocks (and block expiry/revocation) for enforcement there.
04:13 mikemol CloudFlare uses heat maps to detect danger zones in IP address ranges, and being able to feed those heat maps with real spam reports would make it far more effective.
04:14 mikemol I think that's probably the single most effective / least intrusive thing that could be done.
04:15 mikemol Aiee.
04:15 mikemol I think I just turned 30.
04:15 mikemol Yup. Got my first FB notification from a well-wisher.
04:15 eMBee eh? you think?
04:16 mikemol I sometimes think. I sometimes act. I sometimes do both, and that's a fact.
04:17 eMBee kids these days...
