08:52 danaj_ Re the paper, imagine many of these tasks using Pari or Mathematica.  A couple lines of code, excellent performance.  That's more representative of how many of the tasks fall nicely in line with the features they offer as builtins.
08:54 danaj_ More interestingly, some languages have a rich ecosystem.  So the "right" way to solve a task may be something like (in pseudolanguage) "import numtheory; say cool_task(n);" which is concise, fast, and what users probably should do.  But I think we'd also like to see a solution implemented in the language from scratch.  Both are interesting.  How do you measure that?
09:08 eMBee danaj_: good points, raise it on the blog post about the paper.
09:08 * eMBee would like to see some discussion there

14:46 mwn3d1 We got slashdotted again. It's about that paper.
14:48 mwn3d1 Oh we already have a banner up about it
14:50 dchapes I wished logged in users could dimiss the the sitenotice banner until it next changes.
14:50 dchapes ^wished^wish
14:50 mikemol Traffic level from Slashdot is nothing speccial this time. Pushing less than 100 pageviews per minute.
14:52 mikemol dchapes: Compacted the sitenotice a little bit so it wouldn't take up as much screen space.
14:54 dchapes mikemol: thanks, good idea to keep it as small as possible IMO
14:54 mikemol I like the idea of being able to dismiss notices, too. Consider that on my wishlist.
14:54 mikemol Granted, my wishlist hasn't had any items popped off it in a few years...
14:55 dchapes :) been there, my motto is apparently: "there is nothing more permanent than a temporary solution" :)
14:56 dchapes (It was only supposed to be a temporary motto but ...)

15:22 ivanshmakov mikemol: Well, with Stylish, it’s possible to “dismiss” pretty much anything off a Web site…
15:23 mikemol ivanshmakov: I'm not about to make any changes to the server, TBH. Not until after it migrates to a new host.
15:23 mikemol Which might happen early next year. Granted, my last attempt was in February...
15:24 ivanshmakov mikemol: Thankfully, Stylish is what gets installed on the /client./
16:00 mwn3d1 Cloudflare ddos protection: active
16:09 mikemol snort
16:09 mikemol I'll fix it in a minute.
16:09 mikemol have to reboot my desktop box.

18:08 mikemol Yeah, that was anemic, as slashdottings go. Only about doubled our normal traffic.
18:11 mikemol Huh.
18:11 mikemol Looking at the historical data, today's slashdotting (which is already declining) peaked at just about half the peak traffic of our first slashdotting.
18:12 mikemol Which means our normal traffic is about 1/4 of our peak slashdotted traffic from when we started out.
18:12 mikemol We've certainly come a long ways...
18:34 mwn3d1 People are probably more interested in the paper from that post
18:35 mwn3d1 I looked at the analytics myself. It really didn't look that crazy.
18:36 mwn3d1 Still if we got 3 or 4 more contributors who care it will be really valuable
18:39 mwn3d1 Even if it's only academics really paying attention to the story we could get another Dmitry (if you remember him) out of it
