05:10 goodwill what are some of the more widely used server side backups solutions, besides rsync + tar
05:13 EugeneKay Basically.... rsync, or rsynclib :-p
05:13 EugeneKay librsync*
05:14 EugeneKay I use a script built around `cp -al` + rsync for hourly, daily, weekly backups.
05:15 EugeneKay If you're using a snapshotting filesystem(or layer such as LVM) you can enforce consistent snapshotting, but IMO it's rarely worth the effort. I've only ever needed to restore a critical file or three

11:36 kiorky goodwill: but be prepared for a learning curve and some pitfalls, even more with disk based backups.
11:36 kiorky (cleaning old backups is a pain)
11:36 kiorky but that's the more reliable solution i tried.
11:37 kiorky forget backup pc which can just let you out whe you reboot and have not enought ram to mount your partition full of hardlinks
11:37 kiorky :)
11:38 kiorky you have also amanda but its more legacy (totally biased advice)
11:38 kiorky (amanda is a great and well not backup solution ...)

19:26 kchr hey... is it possible to only run/load a specific state (.sls) file, on a minon?
19:26 kchr *minion
19:27 kchr (ie bypassing the "need" for state.highstate on small updates... it's ok to yell at me if that's bad practice)
19:28 mgw kchr: yes
19:28 mgw use state.sls
19:29 mgw instead of state.highstate
19:29 kchr mgw: cool, thanks!

20:05 kiorky UtahDave: https://github.com/saltstack/salt/pull/6145
20:17 kchr hmmm... i'm trying to use the 'apt' module to see which minions have a certain package installed, but i get no output at all (salt stdout)
20:17 kchr this should give me something (on debian minions), wouldnt it? :
20:17 kchr # salt '*' apt.version apt
20:18 kchr debug logging active on master and one of the minions, but nothing weird there
20:18 UtahDave kiorky: thatch45 is going to have to review that pull req.  Looks pretty cool to me, though!  Thanks
20:18 kchr i see in the master log that minions are returning job statuses even after the 'salt' command is finished
20:18 kchr could that have something to do with it?
20:18 UtahDave kchr: you need to use the 'pkg' module
20:19 kchr UtahDave: oh
20:19 UtahDave kchr: salt \* pkg.version apt
20:20 Xeago joined #salt
20:20 kchr hmmm still nothing on the stdout
20:20 kchr and minions keep reporting job statuses after command returns me to the prompt
20:20 kchr thats no anomaly?
20:23 UtahDave what version of salt are you on , kchr?
20:23 kiorky UtahDave: well for me syndic support is just broken without my PR
20:24 kiorky (if you do not share the sock dir at least, it cant work)
20:24 kiorky and that's the default deb/ubuntu config
20:25 napperjabber joined #salt
20:27 UtahDave kiorky: that's cool.  Just with something like that thatch will want to look it over.
20:29 kchr UtahDave: 0.16.0-1~bpo70+1~dst.1 on minions, upgraded today... still on 0.15.1-1 on master. bad combo?
20:29 kchr UtahDave: when debug logging is activated on minions i do see the return output from pkg commands
20:30 UtahDave kchr: you should always have your master be newer or the same as your minions
20:30 kchr how do i get them to the salt master stdout?
20:30 kchr ok, check. figures.

21:19 kchr i know i can send the minion log to wherever but im just curious
