15:24 rspectre Is there a way to customize the check a state makes to determine success?
15:27 jaequery joined #salt
15:28 matanya joined #salt
15:31 techdragon rspectre you can write your own custom states fairly easily after you get to grips with how everything pieces together.
15:31 rspectre techdragon: Right on.  Looking for just a parameter to add to a state that will indicate a package is installed.
15:31 techdragon Or use the cmd.run state and customise the data you return in order to specify if your desired success conditions are true or not.
15:32 techdragon rspectre you can't just use the existing stuff in the package state ?
15:33 techdragon Or are you looking merely to check its installed and not install it if it doesn't exist?
15:34 rspectre techdragon: Issue is with the pip module.  Trying to use it to auto-upgrade pip itself, but it uses freeze to check if it was successful.  pip doesn't show up in freeze.
15:35 techdragon Ahhhh
15:35 techdragon system package?
15:35 techdragon because if your on a linux distro where your able to use your distro pip package. the pkg module is probably better for this sort of task.
15:35 techdragon ^pkg state
15:36 * techdragon hopes its not centos/redhat
15:36 rspectre techdragon: Right.  Issue is for Precise, the version of pip is old.  Want to install it with pkg.installed, but want to upgrade it to latest with pip.installed.
15:36 techdragon hrmmm
15:36 rspectre Just want to customize the check for success for pip.installed to get version from CLI.
15:37 techdragon id say the more reliable route would be ensuring pkg gets the latest version, which may involve some customising of your sources.
15:38 techdragon adding a line or two to the deb confs should be able to get you a more recent package right?
15:38 rspectre techdragon: Is the a list of the conditionals you can apply to a state?
15:38 rspectre s/the/there
15:39 rspectre I've been trying to find one with little success.
15:39 techdragon rspectre I'm not sure that the pip state can deal with this sort of work.
15:40 techdragon not without reading the source code.
15:40 rspectre techdragon: kk - appreciate the help bud.
15:41 techdragon You could use it to manage the pip version inside a virtualenv i think.
15:41 techdragon but system pip I'm not sure of.

16:04 whiskybar I was wondering, when grains.delval etc. are actually available?
16:05 whiskybar it's already in the docs http://docs.saltstack.com/ref/modules/all/salt.modules.grains.html#module-salt.modules.grains but no release implements them yet

16:59 JesseC How can you require an id?
16:59 JesseC If I have 4-5 files being created and I need a single command to require all of them be present before it runs
16:59 JesseC could I just put those files under an id and then require the id?
17:04 EugeneKay Yes, but the terminology is to include a file which shares its name with a minion's ID
17:05 JesseC hmm, I'm not sure what you mean
17:05 JesseC what if it isn't a file
17:06 EugeneKay You can do whatever; so long as it's good Jinja templating
17:06 JesseC the examples in the requisites shows a file and cmd example
17:06 EugeneKay It gets rendered out before executing
17:06 EugeneKay Fiddle with it, you'll get it ;-)
17:07 JesseC oh I am, lol

17:23 JesseC is it not possible to run an overstate in a masterless setup?
17:24 koolhead11 joined #salt
17:28 JesseC salt-call --local state.highstate is possible, but state.over or state.overstate isn't available

22:28 JesseC So. Any ideas on running overstate on a masterless minion?
22:29 JesseC You can't require included sls's so the only thing left to run specific things in order is overstate, but salt-run state.over doesn't work on a masterless minion.
22:29 JesseC *You can't require within the included sls's

22:44 mike25ro hey guys
22:44 mike25ro http://docs.saltstack.com/ref/states/all/salt.states.file.html?highlight=salt.states#salt.states.file
22:44 mike25ro what is the deal with the environment variable? i am missing it from my logic... how is that implemented?
22:45 mike25ro - salt://foo.conf?env=dev
22:45 mike25ro where should this env be setup?
22:48 JesseC I think all the knowledgeable salt people are absent today. lol
22:49 mike25ro JesseC: yeah i believe that too
22:49 mike25ro one more reason ... to read more :)
22:49 linjan hey
22:49 JesseC I think I've read all I can.
22:49 mike25ro me too... i am starting all over again :)
22:49 JesseC It's impossible to order sls's in any logical manner
22:49 mike25ro reading + testing

22:50 mike25ro ah...
22:50 mike25ro didn't try that... i jus test with a master and 2 minions
22:50 mike25ro to see ... if the doc is right... and it really works
