13:14 ramesh Hello
13:14 ramesh is there a way to run salt on dry run mode
13:14 ramesh something like noop in puppet
13:16 scalability-junk ramesh: yeah
13:17 mikedawson joined #salt
13:17 ramesh scalability-junk: how to do that ?
13:18 s0undt3ch joined #salt
13:18 scalability-junk ramesh: looking for the command ;)
13:19 ramesh ahh, thanks
13:20 scalability-junk http://docs.saltstack.com/ref/states/testing.html
13:21 scalability-junk it will show all changes, which would be introduced, without actual changes I assume pretty similar too noop
13:21 ramesh thanks scalability-junk
13:21 noeplana joined #salt
13:21 ramesh yeah pretty similar and simple too
13:21 noeplana how i can run cmd after file transfered to minion?
13:22 carlos joined #salt
13:22 bhosmer joined #salt
13:23 scalability-junk noeplana: you can have watch: /path/to/file within the cmd.run stuff
13:23 scalability-junk then it would be triggered on file update.
13:23 scalability-junk or you could require: $state_which_transfers_file
13:24 scalability-junk noeplana: http://www.saltstat.es/posts/dependencygraph.html
13:24 noeplana thx, dive into reading
13:32 [diecast] joined #salt
13:35 noeplana scalability-junk, my brains melting
13:35 scalability-junk hehe about which part?
13:40 noeplana everything, saltstack is extreamly hard for me to understand
13:40 gatoralli joined #salt
13:42 scalability-junk you have states to say what the system should look like.
13:42 scalability-junk you have pillars to hold data
13:43 scalability-junk states and pillars are merged into flat files and therefore 2 pillars with backup: data would become backup: data (deduplicated, or merged)
13:43 scalability-junk because of that you can have overwriting states
13:44 Furao joined #salt
13:44 scalability-junk the order in which the states are run is sort of random and therefore you have to tell which order you want.
13:44 scalability-junk for that you have the easiest require, which says run that state before this one
13:44 scalability-junk then you have watch to watch file changes for example
13:45 scalability-junk and the rest are additions mostly require statements from the other side ;)
13:45 scalability-junk that's pretty much it
13:45 scalability-junk additionally to config management and states you can run command over the whole cluster
13:45 scalability-junk in the top.sls state or pillar file you tell which server is using which state or pillar
13:47 scalability-junk usually that's determined via fqdn which could be 1.webserver.project.datacenter.dns.net ... and you would then use '*webserver*' to say that these servers should use a webserver state for example.
13:47 scalability-junk one other thing which is quite helpful are grains. sort of predefined system values, cpu info, ram info and a lot more. you can set them yourself if you need.
13:47 noeplana that the eases part of salt
13:48 scalability-junk what's the hard part?
13:48 noeplana easiest*
13:48 noeplana order of states
13:49 scalability-junk great that I wrote up the easy part then :D
13:50 noeplana order of states is hardest part ^)
13:52 noeplana may be u can point me , here is my top.sl http://pastebin.com/fjmgR8TS
13:53 scalability-junk you already did most of the require
13:53 scalability-junk just try to determine on each declaration a require
13:54 scalability-junk on each run there should be a require I would say...
13:54 qba73 joined #salt
13:54 noeplana right now cmd runs even if config not changed
13:56 scalability-junk mhh I think it should be right, but can't jump into it more deeply sorry

17:44 squelch hi all, i am suddenly getting an error for mysql 'Access denied for user 'root'@'localhost' (using password: NO' on ubuntu. It shouldn't even be using root should it?
17:44 zonk1024 did you use sudo?
17:46 squelch state.highstate runs as root
17:49 zonk1024 what user do you want to connect to mysql? is there a password? what are you connecting to mysql with, the module?
17:50 squelch this is set in minion.conf, so i expected debian-sys-main:
17:50 squelch mysql.default_file: /etc/mysql/debian.cnf
17:50 squelch yeah just mysql.user in states
17:51 napperjabber joined #salt
17:52 zonk1024 squelch what do you have defined in your debian.cnf?
17:52 squelch host, user, password and socket for debian-sys-maint
17:53 squelch it's only just started doing this, was working fine earlier
17:54 zonk1024 seems like the last push was pretty terrible, right now
17:54 zonk1024 from my experience at least
17:55 zonk1024 broke my gitfs, and my system came up without ssh after a reboot… have to go hook up a monitor.
17:55 zonk1024 see if you can roll salt back
17:56 squelch nothing has changed, I'm using 0.16.2
17:56 zonk1024 something has to have changed
17:58 squelch not really, i added one folder. unrelated to mysql and now it's trying to use root for mysql

19:19 TOoSmOotH similar to puppet and node files

19:45 jkyle joined #salt
19:47 jkyle I'm looking over the quickstart docs, it looks like salt-call requires a master configuration file?
19:56 whiteinge jkyle: i don't think so. if you don't use the --local flag to salt-call then it will attempt to communicate with a running salt-master. if you use the --local flag then i believe it only looks at the minion config file
19:57 whiteinge you can also set "local" mode in the minion config (you probably also want to set file_roots) so you don't have to use the --local flag all the time

20:34 squelch anyone else know why my mysql states are failing on my production box, with 'Access denied for user 'root'@'localhost' (using password: NO)'
20:35 squelch (ubuntu 12.04)
20:35 EugeneKay Just a guess, but because you're not using a password, and there is one set on the mysql root user
20:36 EugeneKay You need to set the mysql. family of options in your minion config file so it can connect to MySQL with the appropriate permissions
20:37 EugeneKay root / (empty string) are the default user / pass
20:37 squelch there is a password set for root, but i don't know why it's trying to use root. Minion file has 'mysql.default_file: /etc/mysql/debian.cnf' which points to a 'debian-sys-maint' user
20:37 EugeneKay I recommend not using root, but setting up(by hand) a MySQL user just for salt
20:38 EugeneKay Oh right, because Debian.
20:38 EugeneKay I have no clue :-p
20:38 squelch :(
20:38 EugeneKay Check that the user salt is running as(typically root) has permissions to that file(it ought to), and that the filename isn't typoed or anything silly

20:55 squelch EugeneKay: nah, 777'd it just in case but no luck.. What's weird is if i remove that line from minion.conf and specify a mysql.user, it still tries to use root..
20:55 EugeneKay Possibly a bug
20:55 EugeneKay Be patient, I'm sure somebody who actually uses that module will be around
