02:36 SEJeff_work cedwards, Well do salt-call network.interfaces lo1
02:36 SEJeff_work network.interfaces doesn't take arguments
02:37 SEJeff_work also, the datastructure returned is more like: lo1["inet"]["address"] = "127.0.0.1"
02:37 cedwards hmm ok
02:38 SEJeff_work Does that help any?
02:40 littleidea joined #salt
02:41 SEJeff_work {% for host,interface_data in salt['publish.publish']('smtp*','network.interfaces').items() %}server {{ host }} {{ interface_data["lo1"]["inet"]["address"] }} {% endfor %}
02:41 SEJeff_work cedwards, from eyeballing it, something vaguely like that ^^
02:42 SEJeff_work I might add {% if "lo1" in interface_data %} and then put the {{ interface_data... }}
02:42 SEJeff_work Just to be bulletproof in case you don't have that interface available
02:43 cedwards let me see what i can do

13:50 * madduck is very confused
13:52 madduck http://slexy.org/raw/s21mNIgeCr
13:53 madduck I am using master_tops and it appears as if state.show_top gives the right info. But state.highstate cannot be applied because it cannot find the 'sls'
13:53 madduck help, please! ;)
13:53 madduck (0.16.3)
13:54 Jahkeup madduck: these sls' are in your /srv/salt ?
13:54 Jahkeup try doing a salt-call state.show_sls black.virt.local
13:55 Jahkeup oops
13:55 mwillhite joined #salt
13:55 Jahkeup I meant salt-call state.show_sls etc_hosts
13:55 Jahkeup actually it looks like you're calling the hosts as sls not the sls for the hosts
13:56 Jahkeup madduck: can you paste your top.sls
13:58 tuxIO joined #salt
13:58 baniir joined #salt
13:58 Jahkeup madduck: chances are that you are using periods in your top.sls without quotes and being interpreted as being states themselves
13:59 madduck Jahkeup: no, I don't have an sls in /srv/salt. I only use master_tops
13:59 Jahkeup ah I missed that, did you use quotes?
14:00 madduck quotes where?
14:00 Jahkeup for your 'node.name.local'
14:00 madduck oh, there are *no* files.
14:00 madduck file_roots: base: - /home/madduck/sa/salt/states
14:00 madduck that just contains states, but if I do the show_sls etc_hosts, it is not shown.
14:01 Jahkeup then the sls may not exists. What is the path to your sls?
14:01 madduck http://slexy.org/raw/s20EugfyRU
14:03 jetblack joined #salt
14:03 Jahkeup so white is a minion, try executing salt 'white*' state.show_sls etc_hosts from the master
14:03 madduck should top data be base:sls:hostname or base:hostname:sls ?
14:04 madduck the latter, right?
14:04 Jahkeup yes
14:04 madduck % salt 'white*' state.show_sls etc_hosts               #10054 [pts/10]
14:04 madduck white.virt.local: ----------
14:04 madduck (nothing)
14:05 Jahkeup okay lets do a salt 'white*' -l debug state.show_sls etc_hosts
14:05 Jahkeup and see if there are any errors in the output
14:05 madduck http://slexy.org/raw/s21O4oaH80
14:07 Jahkeup okay master looks good, go to minion and stop the service and run salt-minion -l debug on the minion as root
14:07 madduck done
14:07 Jahkeup and do  salt 'white*' state.show_sls etc_hosts from the master again
14:07 madduck http://slexy.org/raw/s21KAxhRQ3
14:08 Jahkeup and look at the output on the minion
14:08 madduck see paste
14:09 Jahkeup reading
14:09 madduck nothing there :(
14:10 madduck here is an error in master debug output: http://slexy.org/raw/s2W0HGa8m2
14:10 madduck about file_roots
14:11 Jahkeup madduck: hmm that is interesting, can you paste master config?
14:11 bhosmer joined #salt
14:12 madduck Jahkeup: http://scratch.madduck.net/code__salt__local__etc__salt__master
14:13 Jahkeup that's bizarre :/
14:13 madduck when this runs, path, load is
14:13 madduck /home/madduck/sa/salt/states {'cmd': '_file_list', 'env': 'base'}
14:14 madduck so the path is fine, but load has no 'prefix'
14:14 madduck i am running HEAD develop master btw
14:14 Jahkeup oh, hmm can you try this with 0.16.3?
14:15 Jahkeup its possible that the current dev branch has broken something amidst working :)
14:16 madduck yeah, that works
14:16 * madduck files an issue
14:16 Jahkeup with 0.16.3 it works? :D

14:56 madduck AAAAH
14:57 madduck why does Salt have to reinvent the wheel everywhere? Why can't it just load Python modules instead of providing its own loader?
14:57 madduck This makes debugging incredibly difficult.

23:50 EugeneKay I use a pillar named roles, with various values defined down in it.
23:50 EugeneKay Then in my highstate I check to see if a given role exists, and include the services/states needed to fulfill that role
23:50 EugeneKay For email, I include a role-specific postfix config if the role is present, or use a generic one otherwise.
23:51 EugeneKay This could be done with grains data as well, if you wanted.
23:51 EugeneKay My preference is to centralize(and thus, keep inside my git repo) as much of the information about a minion as possible.
