00:55 erasmas mgw: turned out svn itself was missing at that point. it's weird that salt doesn't give you nicer error messages. it did that to me with git.latest before

01:39 aranhoide I have some minions that can reach the master if I log into them and (e.g.) salt-call state.highstate.  but if I try and target them from the master (even with '*') they won't respond
01:39 aranhoide I'm using 16.0
01:39 aranhoide is there some known condition that could cause that?

07:14 ehazlett i am testing with it running in docker -- i have both ports exposed and can authenticate but can't run salt commands
07:14 ehazlett if i bind to 4505 and 4506 on the host it works
07:14 ehazlett so it looks like just the publish isn't working when using a port other than 4505

14:39 tim Hi all, sorry but I have a somewhat retarded question ... I'm going through the tutorials (and they're great) but I don't understand how the mast keeps the minions up to date without manually running jobs ... how does this happen? It isn't even addressed in anything I've read
14:39 aleszoulek joined #salt
14:40 dkuffner joined #salt
14:40 tim but I have some states set up etc. but they're not applied until I run them by hand
14:40 rmt_ tim, yes, that seems to be how Salt works.
14:41 rmt_ tim, you could, however, trigger it from the client-side.
14:41 tim some videos I've seen with the creator indicate otherwisae, though
14:42 rmt_ # salt-call state.highstate
14:42 tim but I have to say, I've gotten further with salt in a few hours than with chef in a few days
14:42 tim rmt_, so people just use cron or something?
14:43 supplicant we just apply when we know we make changes
14:43 supplicant but some people use cron
14:44 rmt_ tim, what kind of use-case/environment do you have?
14:45 tim I'm still in the tutorial stage, but we're going to use it to manage our AWS clusters (about 250 instances)
14:45 rmt_ Ok, a relatively small and homogeneous setup.  Salt should work great. :-)
14:46 rmt_ tim, do you use auto-scaling?
14:47 jimallman joined #salt
14:47 tim No, we should, but the previous admins implemented their own load balancing solution (and it is very half baked), with extremely dumb auto-scaling
14:48 tim Switching over to ELB is definitely on the menu this year
14:48 rmt_ You might consider writing some auto-key-signing code on the saltmaster(s) which checks that the requesting instances are actually yours.  I'm not sure you can verify by IP yet.. but verifying by name is probably sufficient.  Or maybe someone's already done that. :)

18:27 _ikke_ The idea is that with salt you define the state you want them to be in

23:02 mlanner_ hi -- been looking around a bit and can't find info on how to configure and start halite. anyone have any tips?
23:03 forrest mlanner_, did you look at the github page?
23:03 forrest mlanner, https://github.com/saltstack/halite#installation-quickstart
23:03 forrest take a look at that, it's actually on my list of stuff to do this weekend to get started on some docs for halite.
23:03 mlanner_ forrest doing now ...
23:04 mlanner_ thx
23:04 forrest np
23:04 forrest I'll try to get something pushed to the main repo this weekend, as well as a correction in the release notes, I know it makes it sound as though halite is bundled with the salt master
23:05 mlanner_ yup, that's exactly what i thought. ;)
23:06 fragamus_ joined #salt
23:06 mlanner_ was also searching for a salt-halite in pkgs, but nada. now i'm better informed.
23:06 forrest Yea I'll make a push to ensure that gets fixed at the very least this evening, I need to do some testing with halite before I can get those docs done though, to see about putting it behind apache/nginx.
23:06 forrest I don't know what the roadmap looks like for an halite package
23:08 mlanner_ maybe i'll hold off until tomorrow to see where you're at.
