08:03 VSpike good morning. I'm playing with rackspace cloud for the first time, and salt for the first time too. The attempts I've done so far include the master as the first machine I create on the cloud....
08:04 ramteid joined #salt
08:04 VSpike reading the salt cloud docs though, it makes me think the master perhaps ought to be outside that setup and in the core of my existing networks.
08:05 VSpike Am I right though that I can have tiers of masters? So I could experiment with a cloud containing a master, then later if I start using salt everywhere, join that master to a new, central one?

11:59 donatello hi all
12:00 olenz Hi
12:01 donatello to preseed minions with accepted keys, the doc says to add the key files as /etc/salt/pki/minion/minion.pem and /etc/salt/pki/minion/minion.pub - are the file names fixed? or can they be the minion id
12:01 donatello i am referring to this document - http://docs.saltstack.com/topics/tutorials/preseed_key.html
12:02 olenz I would assume they are fixed
12:03 olenz let me just check
12:03 olenz On my minions, they all have the name "minion.{pem, pub}"
12:03 olenz So I assume that is the name they have to have
12:04 donatello i dont want to use the autogenerated minion_ids based on hostname, so I specify it explicitly in the config file. does this have any effect on the key file names?
12:05 olenz I do not hink so
12:05 donatello ok. thanks olenz =)
12:05 olenz You can definitely use the fixed name
12:05 redondos joined #salt
12:06 olenz Now a question from my side: I want to try a fixed version of states/pkg.py
12:06 olenz To do that, I have simply tried to put it into _states/ in my root.
12:06 olenz However, it seems to me that this didn't work.
12:07 olenz I have tested other states like that.
12:07 olenz Is there anything speical about pkg.py?
12:07 sebgoa joined #salt
12:07 olenz Might that be because it is a virtual module?
12:07 olenz No, that is not actually true. The state is not virtual
12:08 olenz An ideas?
12:08 donatello olenz: I haven't check code, but it appears that pkg is a virtual module - http://docs.saltstack.com/ref/modules/#virtual-modules
12:09 olenz The module, ys, but the state, no

12:56 VSpike How safe is to bind salt to public IP addresses (masters and minions)?
12:58 eliasp when/how does the Saltmaster update gitfs? does it just do periodic pulls? how often does it pull? can I trigger this manually? where does it clone the git repos to?
13:02 olenz @eliasp: usually, gitfs updates every 60s
13:03 Teknix joined #salt
13:03 olenz given by "loop_interval" in the master config
13:03 olenz but you can force it by using "salt-run fileserver.update" on the master
13:04 eliasp olenz: ok, great
13:04 olenz VSpike: what do you mean to "bind" salt to them?
13:04 olenz And what is a "public" IP addres?
13:05 olenz The master and the minons use a public key encrypted protocol
13:05 olenz So I expect them to be pretty secure
13:05 olenz If that is what you mean
13:07 VSpike olenz: yes, I mean to make them listen on internet-facing IP addresses

13:08 eliasp olenz: ok, problem found… it asks to accept the git server's fingerprint, although I supplied a known_hosts file… need to figure out what's wrong here…
13:08 Teknix joined #salt
13:09 VSpike Normally on machines in our colo, or on Rackspace cloud, we have a private network IP and an internet IP...my first instinct is to keep everything on the private net if possible
13:10 VSpike With Rackspace, I have no VPNs so I have no access from anywhere else to the private net, so was thinking it would be convenient to keep the "interface" setting at the default 0.0.0.0
13:10 olenz That is generally a good idea, I think
13:10 VSpike I thought it should be fairly safe, but I dont have a detailed understanding of the protocol
13:11 olenz Ok, I'm no expert on this
13:11 Teknix joined #salt
13:12 VSpike I guess it would only be for test setups - longer term I'll go for their rackconnect hardware firewall or a virtual router appliance or something
13:13 pdayton joined #salt
13:14 olenz I mean, I think all communication between master and minions is encrypted
13:14 olenz using a pretty good protocoll
13:14 VSpike yep, and unless you can access the master it would be hard to spoof I think
13:14 olenz Indeed
13:15 VSpike Always a risk of exploit with any open protocol, but it's open source and actively maintained so as good as anything else in that regard
13:15 olenz So at the end it boils down to the question whether it is good to have a machine in the public internet...
13:15 olenz ;-)
13:16 olenz From http://docs.saltstack.com/topics/ : Salt uses public keys for authentication with the master daemon, then uses faster AES encryption for payload communication; authentication and encryption are integral to Salt.
13:16 olenz I think that is as safe as it gets
13:17 tomeff_ joined #salt
13:17 eliasp olenz: yes, it can be trusted just as much as OpenVPN which uses more or less the same mechanisms…

22:14 jfchevrette forrest, cool. and does it make sense to have a kernel upgrade + reboot state? I googled for something similar and haven't found anything similar
22:15 forrest jfchevrette, yea I think it does, I just wouldn't add it to your top.sls, so it's just a one off.
22:15 forrest but yes, if I was managing an environment, I'd have a bunch of states that did that kind of task
22:15 forrest what might be even better, is a state that updates the kernel, and a seperate state that restarts the server.
22:16 forrest I looked at this a while back, still haven't figured out how to perform something after the box restarts in a solid fashion, but for what you want, it is awesome.
22:16 jfchevrette cool look into that. Can I have my reboot cmd/state run only if the kernel package was changed/updated?
22:17 jfchevrette looking at the onlyif option atm

22:17 forrest yea I was gonna say the onlyif option for cmd might do it
22:18 linuxnewbie using cmd.run ...i run a bash script ...how can i stop salt state from going on if the script does not exit with 0 ?

22:19 jfchevrette ah, maybe I can have my reboot cmd 'watch' my kernel package state... Only it seems to me that once I tell my server to reboot my state run might not end properly... I'll have to play with that :)
22:20 forrest yea that might work
22:20 forrest linuxnewbie, you could try the onlyif option for cmd.run? I don't know if it bases it on exit value though
22:20 linuxnewbie forrest, ok i'll try

22:36 cachedou_ linuxnewbie: I'm on my way out the door but the Overstate system is designed to handle that very use case. Have a look here: http://docs.saltstack.com/ref/states/overstate.html

22:48 lesnail Hey everyone, I was wondering if there anybody knows how jobs are scheduled. I have jenkins firing an event to the salt master which then reacts by sending back jobs to push the files to master. What bothers me is that the files are delivered in batches of 2 with 1 minute pause between each batch
22:50 lesnail I thought it might relate to the loop_interval configuration variable, but it still has this timeout
23:02 linuxnewbie does anyone know how can i add multiple onlyif in the same cmd.run state ?
