00:56 forrest steveoliver, sorry I was away,
01:01 shadowsun joined #salt
01:01 shadowsun Yo!
01:01 shadowsun forrest: You around?
01:01 forrest shadowsun, yea what's up
01:02 shadowsun Do you know what the @#$%@! I have to do to make batch mode not run a command on everything at once?
01:02 forrest Are you not specifying the batch size?
01:02 forrest or are you talking about everything within the batch being run at once
01:03 shadowsun It's not within the batch
01:03 shadowsun It's not syncronous since 0.17.0 but now I've run into a problem
01:04 shadowsun and I need batch mode to actually work again
01:04 shadowsun >.<
01:04 forrest are you on 0.17.1?
01:05 finisherr joined #salt
01:06 shadowsun I've got one on 0.17.1 and the secondary salt master is on 0.17.2 via pip
01:06 forrest and batch mode isn't working for you on either of those?
01:07 shadowsun since new usually hits pypi before anything else
01:07 shadowsun bingo.
01:07 forrest that seems odd.
01:07 shadowsun Let me give you examples
01:07 forrest ok
01:07 forrest I was just gonna ask if you had run the commands through with debug and gotten anything
01:08 shadowsun debug on which end?
01:09 forrest when running the job from the master
01:09 forrest I'm just curious what the output looks like on a batch run
01:09 forrest and are you specifying batch size as % or number of machines?
01:11 shadowsun number of machines
01:11 shadowsun because I've got various minions which are actually vpses on various nodes... I need to keep it below 2 compiles per node, or I start starving I/O
01:12 shadowsun Aaaand
01:12 shadowsun something something wtf
01:12 forrest you don't have to justify it to me man, this is the first occurence of batch size not working that I've seen since 0.17.1 dropped.
01:12 shadowsun I've got another problem going on here.
01:12 finisherr joined #salt
01:12 shadowsun I think the config on the secondary master might be corrupted.
01:12 shadowsun Hold on.
01:13 forrest ok
01:15 shadowsun okay, the master config file was missing. Let me retest
01:16 finisherr joined #salt
01:20 shadowsun Sorry about that... I'm not the only one who manages these, I'm just the only one who knows all the pieces >.<
01:20 forrest so it works?
01:21 ajw0100 joined #salt
01:21 finisherr joined #salt
01:23 shadowsun Nope, batch mode still has the same problem, but it's not because some systems can't contact one of the masters now
01:24 shadowsun So I found something unrelated and fixed it just for good measure lol
01:24 shadowsun Here's some output
01:25 shadowsun http://pastebin.com/AjRAZiAe
01:25 zandy joined #salt
01:26 forrest one and two are both dev machines in reality?
01:26 forrest or part of the dev group
01:26 shadowsun They both have the grain, yes
01:26 finisherr joined #salt
01:26 shadowsun They're pretty much the same as all the rest, I just test things on them before I push it live
01:27 shadowsun figure them like lab test boxes
01:27 forrest yea
01:27 forrest so can you do a salt 'two.example.com' graints.items
01:27 forrest and the same for one
01:27 shadowsun Using the actual domains, yeah
01:27 shadowsun I'll edit the domains themselves back to example.com
01:28 forrest ok
01:29 forrest and I assume you're connected into both, and seeing the 'done' echo at the same time?
01:30 shadowsun No, they're off by about ten seconds
01:30 shadowsun At the same time, if it's a compile it doesn't matter if the start time is delayed 10, 20, etc seconds
01:30 shadowsun I need it to *not start* another compile until one completes
01:30 forrest yea
01:31 shadowsun I don't care if it's a real queue or not, I just care that I don't drop a node
01:31 hvn joined #salt

01:31 shadowsun btw
01:31 shadowsun lol

01:32 forrest can you try to use --batch-size 50% ?
01:32 shadowsun Certainly!
01:32 forrest I don't know what's up with it, you're the first person who I've seen with this issue :P
01:32 shadowsun Yeah, I can believe it
01:33 shadowsun Is it possible that batch size is depending upon a certain function in zmq?
01:33 forrest other people have been using batch size fine
01:33 forrest I don't know, I'm not familiar enough with the internal workings of batch size
01:33 shadowsun These are CentOS5 boxes and I had to build a version of zmq to deal with the keepalives not working problem
01:33 shadowsun kk
01:33 forrest hmm
01:33 Corey That sounds a bit suspect.
01:33 forrest Well, if this doesn't work I can spin up some boxes over on digital ocean
01:33 shadowsun Corey: how so?
01:34 shadowsun Corey: the version of zeromq available for centos5 is... rather old, and didn't support keepalives.
01:34 forrest Oh no I'm totally blaming shadowsun Corey. :P
01:34 Corey shadowsun: Merely that it introduces a varience between your environment and everyone else's on the planet. :-)
01:34 shadowsun Corey: yeah, that's why I mention it
01:34 shadowsun On the plus side
01:34 shadowsun I did not have the problem with batch mode on 0.16.4 with this custom zmq build
01:34 Corey shadowsun: Uh... isn't there a newer one in EPEL?
01:34 shadowsun hahaha now
01:34 Corey It may be called zmq3.
01:34 shadowsun no
01:34 shadowsun For CentOS 5?
01:35 shadowsun I'll double check, but
01:35 Corey Yeah, I thought that's still supported through non-"build your own" means.
01:35 forrest 2.1.9 is the latest in epel for cent5
01:35 shadowsun No, epel is still 2.1.9
01:36 forrest I can't remember, is it zmq 3+ for salt 0.17?
01:36 shadowsun I'm running 3.2.4 currently
01:36 shadowsun I don't know
01:36 shadowsun I doubt it
01:36 shadowsun Since I'm using official epel versions of salt
01:36 forrest ok, well I'm gonna spin up some cent5 boxes
01:36 shadowsun forrest: okay. I'm going to rip my version of zmq and my entire repo off these dev boxes
01:36 forrest lol ok
01:37 shadowsun So we can both look at it as a variable and see
01:37 forrest 32 or 64 bit?
01:37 bhosmer joined #salt
01:37 shadowsun forrest: sec

01:37 shadowsun so 64bit systems
01:37 forrest ok
01:37 shadowsun at least on these two
01:37 shadowsun ;)
01:38 shadowsun tbh my environment is anti-heterogenous
01:38 forrest on the minions or master?
01:38 shadowsun Both
01:38 forrest ok
01:38 shadowsun Masters are CentOS6
01:38 forrest ahh
01:38 shadowsun these minions are CentOS5
01:38 shadowsun I have one minion that's CentOS6, but I'm not authorized to use it for testing
01:38 forrest lol
01:38 shadowsun I can get in touch with the guy who actually uses that system and ask on monday if I need to
01:39 shadowsun actually wait
01:39 shadowsun I just got 12 new ones, let me check those
01:39 forrest well, the ones that are having issues are 64 bit
01:39 forrest or are you gonna check the batch runs on the newer boxes?
01:39 shadowsun I'm going to check the new ones
01:39 forrest regardless, we need to see if the issue is present on cent5 64 bit machines with the default packages
01:39 shadowsun But so far I've seen the issue on everything
01:40 shadowsun CentOS6 64bit boxes exhibiting the same behavior.

01:57 forrest *shadowsun
01:57 shadowsun Yeah
01:57 shadowsun That's wrong.
01:58 shadowsun It's not waiting to finish the batch run before starting more
01:58 shadowsun If you check to see running processes, you'll see they're still running
01:59 forrest yea I see 'em
01:59 shadowsun yea

01:59 shadowsun Yeah
02:00 * shadowsun puts all his stuff back on his minions
02:00 shadowsun You don't want to know how long it took me to get zeromq spec file to build 3.2.4 on centos 5 and 6, 32 and 64bit
02:00 shadowsun you really don't
02:01 forrest I've built new versions of software for old distros before, so no I don't want to know
02:01 forrest horrible flashbacks
02:01 shadowsun yeah exactly lol
02:02 forrest it worked fine on a package install
02:03 shadowsun ?
02:03 forrest it didn't begin installing on batchminion1, until batchminion2 was complete
02:03 shadowsun The batch mode seems to work fine if the process runs less than about 15 seconds
02:03 shadowsun Any more than that and it's like it times out waiting for the job to complete
02:03 forrest this ran for 23 seconds total
02:03 shadowsun Okay, then I have no freaking idea
02:04 shadowsun I run a script that rebuilts httpd / php / etc, and it doesn't wait
02:04 forrest did you change your salt timeout?
02:04 finisherr joined #salt
02:04 forrest I just modified mine and am rerunning the cmd.run now
02:05 shadowsun On the master?
02:05 forrest yes
02:05 forrest it's 5 seconds by default
02:05 shadowsun Nope
02:05 shadowsun It's not even supposed to apply to batch mode
02:06 forrest ugh I should have done a sleep with less time than 120 seconds..
02:06 forrest I'll be back in a minute, this is still running

02:08 shadowsun Huh.
02:08 shadowsun Timeout *is* being applied to batch mode, apparently.

02:08 forrest yea check my comment
02:08 shadowsun Son of a
02:08 forrest 4m 1 second
02:09 forrest so change your timeout on the master and restart the service, boooooooom
02:09 shadowsun yeah
02:09 shadowsun ....
02:09 forrest ok, you need anything else before I spin these down
02:09 shadowsun My god, that defeats the entire purpose of either having a timeout or having batch mode
02:10 forrest Yea just set it to something reasonable, and file an issue if one doesn't exist
02:10 shadowsun heh
02:10 shadowsun My something reasonable is "no timeout"
02:10 shadowsun Because some of these boxes will take an hour or so to do a rebuild.
02:10 forrest what kind of jobs rae you running :\
02:10 forrest *are
02:10 shadowsun They're cPanel boxes
02:10 halfss joined #salt

02:11 shadowsun with like -j2.
02:11 shadowsun >.<
02:11 forrest Yea, I'd just set it to something outrageous then, and file an issue, at least it works for now so you aren't crashing your env
02:11 shadowsun yeah
02:11 forrest you should tell whoever is relying on cpanel to stop
02:11 shadowsun which is fracking AWESOME
02:11 shadowsun heh

02:12 shadowsun Cool beans
02:12 shadowsun I'm filing a ticket

02:12 forrest and also check if one already exists, lol
02:13 shadowsun lol
02:13 shadowsun yeah I can
02:13 shadowsun Since the salt stack isn't being used for anything critical right now I can do as I please
02:13 shadowsun Once we have classes running, I have to keep everything working again
02:13 forrest classes?
02:13 forrest people use cpanel for classes?

20:05 mufa hello, how can I make this: "salt '*' iptables.insert filter INPUT position=1 rule='--in-interface eth2 -j ACCEPT'" as a state rule to apply to all minions?
20:14 mufa here is my state: http://pastebin.com/rGk4dBRS The error I got is "State iptables.insert found in sls fw is unavailable". Any ideas, please?
20:15 _ikke_ mufa: Yeah, there is a difference between commands and states
20:15 _ikke_ You are trying to use a command in a state
20:16 mufa _ikke_: I guess that is not going to work
20:17 [diecast] joined #salt
20:17 mufa and it looks like iptables.state has only an append module
20:19 mufa which, if I am not wrong, means you can only append rules at the end of the chain.
20:19 _ikke_ I guess the state module isn't that extensive yet
20:20 mufa well, I will just use /etc/sysconfig/iptables file.managed in this case
20:21 mufa thanks for the help
20:22 mufa btw, does anyone know if is possible to build a Rackspace cloud server with cloud networks using salt-cloud?

21:29 philipsd6 q: I've installed the development version on three virtual machines, and the minion on the master registers, ok, but the other nodes go into waiting for minion key to be accepted by master state, but the master does not have the keys in the unaccepted keys list. Debug logging is telling me nothing useful. How can I troubleshoot this better? I can ping the master (as 'salt'
21:29 philipsd6 ) from the minion, so I'm not sure why it's not actually communicating with the master.

22:07 MTecknology philipsd6: Why would that be an issue?
22:08 BenBen hi there, does anyone know a place where i could find config example for db initialization ? (such as creating schema, loading initial data, and creating super users, per environment)
22:09 BenBen i've had a look at the postgres module, but it requires db configuration to be set in /etc/salt/minion.conf , which i find a little weird..
22:10 mwmnj joined #salt
22:10 BenBen (not that i knew of a better place, but it's just that i can't configure minion.conf using tls files, and that was the only place where i configured minions so far)

22:15 BenBen __number5__: ok, thanks. I just had a look, but i can't find the place where i should put the db credential..
22:15 BenBen __number5__: or maybe that means i should only use user based authent ?
22:18 BenBen __number5__: I mean, where should I put the db connection string ? I can't find any parameter that look like it.
22:20 BenBen Ok, i found this tutorial : http://www.barrymorrison.com/2013/Apr/21/deploying-django-with-salt-now-with-postgresql/ i think that should help me.
22:20 BenBen thx
22:21 __number5__ BenBen: and this https://github.com/terminalmage/djangocon2013-sls
22:21 __number5__ you might want to put db credentials into pillar
22:22 BenBen __number5__: yeah, that's what i had the intuition of. Never used pillar, i guess it's time to digg in that..
