00:28 donnex Hi, I'm playing around with salt in a VM running both master and minion on FreeBSD 10-RC5. My pkg installs seems to fail, any idea why? I'm I doing anything wrong?
00:28 donnex https://gist.github.com/donnex/57b87278949ca028b148
00:29 forresta donnex, if you go onto the actual machine and list the nginx package, what returns?
00:30 forresta donnex, also what version of salt are you running?
00:30 donnex salt 0.17.4
00:30 forresta ok
00:30 donnex forresta: nginx is not yet installed
00:31 donnex but salt minion pkg.install nginx works
00:31 donnex coult it be using the old pkg system?
00:31 donnex pkg.install nginx works and pkg install nginx on the host works .. just not when I'm running it from a file
00:32 forresta no that would be using the same module, it seems to me like it might be a naming issue because of that valueerror, what is the freebsd package actually named?
00:32 jimallman joined #salt
00:32 donnex nginx-1.4.4_2,1
00:33 forresta hmm, that should be splitting the vresion correctly

00:35 forresta donnex, can you rerun the state, but add on debug -l ?

00:35 forresta err sorry

00:35 forresta wow I can't type today

00:36 donnex yeah 2 sec :)
00:36 DaveQB joined #salt
00:37 forresta just as a heads up for anyone considering the SSCE here are some details they posted yesterday on it http://www.saltstack.com/certification/
00:38 forresta I'm not sure if it's multiple choice or what, but I'd imagine so being 100 questions.
00:38 donnex forresta: hm, this is the debug output on the minion. Could the zfs stuff have anything to do with this?
00:38 donnex https://gist.github.com/donnex/7d773f3072aec31c22f9
00:38 forresta donnex, oh I thought you were running the install command off the master.
00:39 forresta donnex, I thought you were just running that single state?
00:43 donnex forresta: I'm running salt minion state.highstate on my master here is the output from both master and minion https://gist.github.com/donnex/c9c7ba541b6e08a5a138
00:43 forresta ok let's not do a state.highstate
00:43 forresta instead do salt minion state.sls nginx_state
00:43 forresta and do -l debug on the end of that
00:43 forresta then we can JUST troubleshoot that one state.
00:43 donnex ah okay .. first time playing around with salt but give me a sec :)
00:44 forresta no worries!
00:46 donnex forresta: hm weird .. now it's not doing much at all when I'm running salt minon state.sls.nginx -l debug
00:46 donnex https://gist.github.com/donnex/1830b31da109854dbd46
00:46 forresta did it complete?
00:47 forresta is nginx installed now?
00:49 donnex forresta: not installed, but I think I'm doing something wrong. It doesn't try to install it at all when I'm using state.sls.. I'll try to get it to run
00:50 forresta are you referencing it with the sls extension?
00:50 forresta you shouldn't need to
00:50 forresta salt state.sls nginx.state_name if it's not the init.
00:51 jeremyBass hey i had this working but now it's not.. http://pastebin.com/U7zHFyEQ .. the - require:      - cmd: nginx-compile was working before i started to pass a var to the bash script
00:51 jeremyBass any ideas?
00:51 jeremyBass i thought it we the unless but taking that out doesn't change the fact that the require keeps failing
00:52 forresta jeremyBass, maybe you aren't getting back what you expect. I'd run it through with -l debug and see if that hints at the problem.
00:55 BbT0n joined #salt
00:55 jeremyBass @forresta that is the issue .. when the usless is true the require fails.. and when the state is false, the bash script returns http://pastebin.com/RqwthA8c
00:56 forresta ?
00:56 forresta I'm confused
00:57 forresta it won't run the command if that unless is true
00:57 forresta which means that section is considered to not have run
00:57 forresta why would the require work for a cmd that hasn't been run?
00:58 jeremyBass well when the command runs the require was still failing
00:58 jeremyBass I'll reconfirm it's failing with the unless removed
00:58 forresta ok

01:03 donnex forresta: this is when I'm running salt minion pkg.install nginx https://gist.github.com/donnex/e7dd210b11e38adea85d anything interesting there? I haven't got it to run the whole state yet
01:03 forresta donnex, wel, it's returning the same error
01:03 forresta *well
01:03 forresta you said this works though right?
01:04 donnex not installing nginx no, it fails and nothing gets installed
01:05 donnex I think it something with pkgng. When I'm setting the pkg provider to pkgng in my minion config pkg.install works for nginx, it gets installed
01:05 donnex the same command that failed above
01:06 forresta interesting
01:06 donnex but it's not working with the sate.highstate, then it's failing
01:06 forresta I'd say create an issue donnex
01:06 donnex same error
01:06 donnex yeah
01:06 forresta I'm not familiar enough with how the freebsd code works to give a ton of info
01:06 forresta but I mean, that version splitting shouldn't be failing
01:06 forresta I don't see an issue open for this already which is odd.

01:19 donnex forresta: I know what's wrong now .. I don't know if there is something new in FreeBSD 10, I'm running 10-RC5 but Salts checks for /usr/local/etc/pkg.conf and if that is found it's using pkgng (the new pkg system)
01:19 donnex and it's not on my newly installed vm
01:19 forresta ahhh ok
01:20 forresta weird, is it not on 10 by default?
01:20 donnex I don't know .. I just installed this VM and I don't have it
01:20 donnex only the .sample

01:21 donnex hunter_: same here, a lot of zfs help output
01:21 forresta hunter_, what OS are you on?
01:23 donnex forresta: as soon as I copied the sample file to /usr/local/etc/pkg.conf Salt works like a charm and is using the pkgng. Maybe that file was removed in 10
01:23 hunter_ forresta: centos 6.4 WITH the zfsonlinux installed
01:23 forresta donnex, weird. That should still be filed as an issue, then at least a try can be put in place
01:24 forresta hunter_, no /usr/local/etc/pkg.conf for you either
01:24 donnex yeah
01:24 forresta *?
01:24 hunter_ forresta: eh?
01:24 hunter_ forresta: I did not understand your last post
01:24 forresta does /usr/local/etc/pkg.conf exist on your vm
01:24 hunter_ Nono
01:24 donnex forresta: he's using linux, this is a freebsd thing only
01:25 forresta donnex, oh my bad, the joys of not being a freebsd user :P
01:25 hunter_ forresta: No, it does not.
01:25 hunter_ forresta: I think something in the zfs (?module?) is looking at zfs help for clues about something and is borking - I recall this being an issue but now can't recall where I read that.
01:26 hunter_ I do not think the zfs/zpool module is well written

01:30 hunter_ forresta: thanks - good catch
01:30 MedicalJaneParis is there a syntax for escaping quotes in sls?
01:30 MedicalJaneParis i.e. '\'user-name\''
01:30 MedicalJaneParis may just be an issue with grant module

03:04 forresta I'm surprised by the number of tracks at saltconf

03:04 beach oh crap... you must take the training
03:05 forresta beach, yea that might just be short term though, it's a brand new thing so they might still be tweaking the requirements
03:05 oz_akan_ joined #salt
03:06 beach right, but it's becoming more of an industry standard to either recoup costs, or make it a revenue center by making training a requirement. Like vmware does.
03:06 forresta yea
03:06 beach either way, it's good to see it moving in this direction.
03:06 forresta well, they could just pull a redhat
03:06 Whissi Does a training make sense before an 1.0 release?
03:06 beach lab test?
03:06 forresta and charge you 400 bucks for the basic exams, and 800 for the upper level ones :P
03:07 forresta Whissi, sure why not? 0.17.4 isn't that far off from the RC
03:07 beach yeah, but doesn't red hat require prac app test for their engineer level
03:07 forresta beach, they require it for all levels
03:07 forresta I have my RHCSA, and RHCE, those are both practical exams, 2.5 hours, and 2 hours respectively
03:08 beach plus, you are more marketable with red hat. salt is still pretty young and most people I talk to about say 'salt whaaaa'
03:08 beach ahh
03:08 forresta The tests above those are pretty brutal

14:57 riz_ thats fine :) , just putting out information for who ever can help at any point
14:58 riz_ which version of salt are you running and on which OS ?
14:58 etnbrd I am running Arch linux, and salt from the git repo.
14:59 riz_ right
14:59 etnbrd If you can't install ZMQ3 with salt, isn't it because the CentOS package manager don't allow you to do it ?
14:59 riz_ I will try the git repo version in a vm environment to see how it goes
15:00 etnbrd Yes, that might help.
15:02 riz_ yes it probably epel repo issue, on a separate vm I installed zmq3 which installs libzmq.so.3 , but then if I installed salt it tries to install python26-zmq which requires libzmq.so.1 , so I guess the main issue I am facing is with salt and zmq3 requiring different versions of libzmq.so lib
15:03 riz_ I get this typical "python26-zmq-2.1.9-3.el5.i386 from epel has depsolving problems" error , which some other people have reported as well on internet, but can't see any solutions
15:04 etnbrd Do you install python26-zmq because salt requires it ?
15:04 etnbrd Maybe you could try to install python27-zmq, which would be compatible with libzmq 3
15:05 etnbrd Wild guess for the 27
15:05 etnbrd Actually, my version of Salt run on Pyhton 2.7, but it might not be availbable in the CentOS repo.
15:07 riz_ yes its picked by package installer yum as dependency when I try to install salt ,
15:07 riz_ I can actually install Python 2.7 from source , I am going to try that to see if that helps
15:29 philipsd6 Why do I get "states - Function: no.None - Result: Failed" for minions that don't get any states when I run highstate?

17:26 tonthon Hi, I've got some difficulties with setting up salt syndic
17:26 tonthon I've configured the slave-master to syndic with the master-master, I accepted the key on the master-master
17:27 tonthon but when I try to test.ping it doesn't give me any result
17:27 tonthon a tcpdump on the slave-master shows that the "ping" is coming in, but I get no response
17:28 tonthon (no firewall has been setup on both servers)
17:28 tonthon Any idea where it could come from ?

19:34 nkuttler jeremyBass: does the compiler.sh script fails?
19:37 jeremyBass @nkuttler nope, that return from that [DEBUG   ] stdout:  is that it's true.. returns that with or with out that version set jnina part.. i have independently ensured that it's not the compiler.sh .. as it seems now after much testing it's {%- set nginx_version = pillar['nginx']['version'] -%} that is the use i believe at this time..
19:38 jeremyBass i tried a run with out the  {{ nginx_version }} in the cmd.run but it still failed .. take both out and it works..
19:38 jeremyBass so it has to be the {%- set nginx_version = pillar['nginx']['version'] -%} .. so it leads me to wonder if that needs to be right at the top or something? .. or why wouldn't it even cause an issue..
19:48 jeremyBass so i can confirm it's the  {%- set nginx_version = pillar['nginx']['version'] -%}  .. but I'm not sure why.. the data is found

21:05 hunter pillar_opts: false  <-- should perhaps be the default. Man that makes troubleshooting pillar easier.
