00:06 frasergraham I'm hitting a problem with configuring a virtualenv with salt. When I run the salt-minion as a daemon with launchctl on osx virtualenv fails, but when I run it as a user (not daemonized) it succeeds.
00:06 frasergraham creating the virtualenv manually on the minion as root works fine
00:08 UtahDave Corey: do you know why frasergraham would be hitting that problem?  ^^

00:18 allanparsons (vpc's now support this)
00:20 allanparsons "Automatically assign a public IP address to your instances" is the option when starting via amazon console
00:22 UtahDave allanparsons: I don't think we've added that in yet.  Would you mind opening an issue for it?

01:30 rostam HI general question , I need to  choose a system management software, I am wondering to choose either Puppet or salt. Any recommandation greatly appreciated? thx
01:33 UtahDave Salt!   :)
01:35 Hipikat rostam: salt has been an extremely pleasurable experience in the few weeks since i started using it.
01:36 rostam Hipikat, thank you
01:36 Hipikat rostam: since salt's written in python and puppet is ruby, if you're likely to be dealing in one domain more than the other, it might make life easier to decide accordingly
01:36 Hipikat rostam: but if your purposes are language agnostic, salt certainly seems to offer more *stuff* and is growing… rapidly… by the feel of it
01:38 Hipikat rostam: and i suspect puppet's maturity age-wise means you'll find more ready-made working forumlas (or whatever their equivalent are (oh hey probably recipes?)), if you're not interested in rolling your own configuration states and your needs are generic
01:39 Hipikat err, in puppet that is.
01:42 Hipikat rostam: also salt's got a weird learning curve; i found it befuddling for a week and then everything clicked and it's been smooth sailing since. i suspect puppet's maturity also means more mature docs/tutes if adopting one over the other quickly is a factor

01:48 manfred does anyone have any experience with the cloud states?  I am trying to get the environment to spin up using an overstate?  I think it makes sense that it should work.  I have 2 state files for the database server and the redis server, that are tied to db: and redis: in the overstate.sls, and then have the web group require redis and db to be done, and up.
01:48 manfred has anyone else tried doing something like that?
01:51 Hipikat oh wow i hadn't even found the Salt Virt docs. and here i was about to beat salt-cloud into submission.
01:51 taion809 joined #salt

01:54 tedski what i'm trying to do in an sls is concatenate a string with pillar data
01:54 manfred at some point I want to use salt + salt cloud states to spin up servers and then push pkgbuilds to it and then build on remote servers for my personal repository.
01:54 tedski i.e. - sources: http://host/path/{{ pillar['pkgurl' }}
01:54 manfred http://host/path/{{ pillar['pkgurl'] }}
01:55 tedski yes, thank you
01:55 tedski that was a typo here, not in my sls
01:55 manfred yar
01:55 tedski so, if i do - sources: {{ pillar['pkgurl'] }} it works fine
01:55 tedski but, once i try to concatenante, no bueno
01:55 manfred website/wordpress.sls:    - source: http://wordpress.org/wordpress-{{ pillar['wordpress']['wp-version'] }}.tar.gz
01:56 manfred idk, but that is working for me
01:56 patrek_ joined #salt
01:56 tedski interesting
01:56 manfred that is in one of the new archive.extracted blocks
01:57 tedski yeah, but the convention is the same
01:57 manfred yar
01:57 manfred except, source instead of sources
01:57 tedski right
01:57 tedski mine is in the pkg state
01:57 tedski so, sources is proper
01:57 manfred yar
01:58 manfred might want to try
01:58 manfred - sources:
01:58 manfred - something:
01:58 manfred bah
01:58 manfred - something: http://host/path/{{ pillar['pkgurl'] ]]
01:58 manfred s/]]/}}
01:58 manfred ?
01:59 manfred though i find it odd that it works with just the pillar and not when concatinating
01:59 tedski got it
01:59 tedski typo on my part :/
01:59 manfred nice
01:59 tedski hard quote in the pillar at the front and soft quote ont he end

02:38 Hipikat so there seems to be some grains caching going on on minions, at least as far as what's in /etc/salt/grains is concerned, i.e. if i add a key to that file, it won't automatically show up in `salt minionid grains.items`
02:38 Hipikat but if i `salt minionid grains.setval foo bar`, that'll be added to the file and the grain that was added on the minion (not) by the master also turns up
02:39 Hipikat salt.modules.grains.html docs don't contain the word 'cache' or 'flush' and i'm not sure where to look next…
02:40 Hipikat aah. salt.runners.cache. never mind. :)
02:41 Hipikat i'm yet to screw with runners :o
02:42 dave_den Hipikat: it's nothing to do with runners. you just need to run refresh_modules on the minion after setting a grain manually in /etc/salt/grains  - http://docs.saltstack.com/ref/modules/all/salt.modules.saltutil.html#salt.modules.saltutil.refresh_modules
02:44 Hipikat dave_den: aah. thanks.
02:44 dave_den salt doesn't check the grains files until you tell it to, or on minion restart
02:44 dave_den but grains.setval does the modules refresh automatically
02:44 Hipikat cool so if something's going to 'state.highstate' and a minion's grain data may have changed, refresh_modules should be run first
02:48 manfred https://github.com/saltstack/salt/issues/10281 anyone have an idea on how to get this fixed?
02:53 dave_den Hipikat: in 0.17.x that is correct. however there has been a new 'grains refresher' check in 2014.1 and newer
02:54 Hipikat thanks.
03:03 manfred so silly, i switched it to '1 GB Performance' and it worked
03:03 Hipikat me again. any way to match against items in pillar dictionaries? none of the obvious syntaxes are working for me - https://dpaste.de/eysb - and the salt.modules.match api docs don't go into that detail
03:06 Ryan_Lane joined #salt
03:06 Hipikat no wait i must be missing something much more fundamental… https://dpaste.de/ZbP6 (i'm guessing the fact that comparisons are made as strings and the pillar data is bool??)

14:26 timc3 Can the pillar file just be a text file that gets rendered on to the minion?
14:30 jesusaurus no
14:30 jesusaurus pillars are compiled on the master
14:30 jesusaurus they are just seed data you can use for your templating
14:30 timc3 I was wondering if there was a way of just having a file that gets sent for one minion.
14:31 jesusaurus you would do that by having a state that is only targeted at that minion
14:32 jesusaurus theres an open issue about serving files from the pillar, but i think its a terrible idea
14:33 timc3 jesusaurus: The only reason I wasn't doing that was I wanted to create a generic formula that I could share, and there would be sensitive data in the file. I have decided against that I will create the file manually for now
14:34 jesusaurus so you put just the sensitive data in the pillar, and in the file template you access the pillar data

17:07 astol hi all, can't make grain matching work, can anybody help?
17:07 astol root@aws-chef:/srv/salt/file_roots# salt '*' grains.get os

17:07 astol Debian
17:07 astol root@aws-chef:/srv/salt/file_roots# salt 'G@os:Debian' grains.get os

17:08 astol don't mind the aws-chef hostname :)
17:08 manfred is cloud.present supposed to fail if you haven't specified a cloud.profile?

17:16 timc3 astol: Don't you want to match just with 'os:Debian'
17:16 timc3 astol: Or you could 'os:(Ubuntu:Debian)'
17:16 astol timc3: turns out just didn't enabled -C (compound matchers) in cli
17:17 timc3 astol: Ah! Good to know ;-)

23:40 glen__ I'm attempting to set up a rails dev machine using vagrant and salt but I'm not sure if my set up is correct. Here is my set up http://pastebin.com/rZs2xKM6. My problem is that I get an error:  [ERROR   ] The following packages failed to install/update: gmake, git. The following packages were already installed: curl, openssl, bash.
23:41 forresta glen__, what happens when you try to install gmake and git from the command line?
23:42 glen__ I just ssh'd into it and attempted, it installs fine
23:42 forresta are you adding a repo perhaps?
23:42 forresta when the env gets set up, but the environment isn't refreshing?
23:43 forresta glen__, try adding - refresh: True to that
23:43 forresta and see what happens
23:44 glen__ I'm not using any repos

23:51 forresta doesn't vagrant set up repositories?
23:51 forresta when it creates the shell or whatever.
